did many styles of martial arts when i was younger... When I had my kids, i moved far from my schools so..I kinda stop for family, money etc reasons. I came back at it almost 8 years later. I've been going non-stop at it since...2 to 4 times a week depending my schedule at work. (for almost 3 years now).... The only thing i've found hard to get back was my flexibility and cardio. Those two thing..(with age) kinda go off lol... So I'm working on these two pretty hard. But.....What i'm trying to say is....There's no age to start martial arts. There's health issue for sure but....That's another story. If you're 60 and want to start...your master won't make you jump and roll on the first class...You will go with what you can and become better in time. Those who wants to rush in martial arts...... shouldn't do it anyway. If your goal is to reach the black belt..thinking it's over ...Well..... IT'S NEVER OVER!...Martial arts is for life... Some say that from white to black, you're learning the technics....from black to death, you become one with them.

Movie martial artists!
shinka replied to DoctorQui's topic in Martial Arts Gaming, Movies, TV, and Entertainment
many stuntmans will tell you. Most of the stuntman companies won't hired you if you're too high level in martial arts.... The difference in a real fight and a movie fight is so different that if you are too much experienced in real fighting...it will be harder to make the switch....compare to someone who's : example (green belt)...basic,some kicks and can be modified to screen fighting etc -
ok in all my years of training...It's always been that way. 1st dan = black belt... Easier way to say it.... 1st degree black belt.

I'm a father of two little girls from Montreal Canada. I work as a security investigator. I've practice many different styles of martial arts in my life. I did some Judo,TaeKwonDo,Shorin Ryu Karate and Genbukan Ninjutsu. I made the mistake to stop (money, time, had to move further etc) for a couple years I started again 2 1/2 years ago in Hoshinkido Hapkido. I love it so much. It helps me in my job and keeps me in shape. I'm glad to be part of this forum and I hope I will be able to add some informations etc... and share my passion with you guys.

How many years to black?
shinka replied to senseikellam's topic in Share Your Testing, Grading, or Promotion
like some said...years is a bad example. At my dojang...You can go to regular group class or private class. If you go all the time,3 times a week and add some private.. You can get your black belt in 3-4 years. If you go private a lot....... you can get it in 2 years but that's one on one with the master so..it's pretty intense and you learn a lot. But someone who goes once a week...skip some etc...he will forget the technics etc...it could take a lot longer. Martial art take dedication.... some style have 7 belts to black, some have 13 etc... it's all different. -

best martial arts flicks
shinka replied to superfighter's topic in Martial Arts Gaming, Movies, TV, and Entertainment
I'm a fan of the hard to find movie : Azumi (1 & 2)...it's more like a ninja-samurai movie but the sword fights etc are very good. The Hunted is a good martial art movie (nobody knows it's one) it's with christophe lambert (highlanders)he doesn't do much in it...but it's with ninjas, samurai, GM Tak Kubota plays in it...lots and lots of action.... Check it out -
first two are amazing.... the fight scene with the japanese in the first one... Amazing, simply amazing.

Nunchaku - Foam, rubber, wood or metal?
shinka replied to BarbedTerror's topic in Martial Arts Weapons
I use foam to practice and homemade wood for demo.... It's a personal choice. For all the people outside usa etc...mostly in canada... Goodluck with wood and metal.. it's illegal in Canada. You can buy the swivel kit and make them yourself. You could probably make some in metal too... -
Or just use what Albert Einstein said... I do not know what weapons World War III will be fought with, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones. I go with him

I agree with the others... There's no deadliest one.... When you become a human weapon....You are a weapon no matter what style you practice. All depends on the person and what's good for you. Honestly, Do not go into a dojo (dojang) and ask the Sensei (Kwan jang nim) if his style's the deadliest...He will kick you out for sure. Become one with a style you like....search about what you would like better. Ground,no ground, more punches,kicks....joint locks etc.... But...... There's martial sports and martial arts... (not offense to anyone here) Martial sports.... Judo,Tae Kwon do,some karate (not all) etc... olympic arts and lots of competitions with padding etc... Martial arts..... Hapkido,Krav Maga, Ninjutsu etc.... no competition (too high risk of injury)...for example..Hapkido sometime have some but most of all the root of the art is modified to be acceptable in competition so it become something else than the original hapkido. so decide by yourself...all the answers were good. I just gave my opinion here

Hapkido or Taekwondo?
shinka replied to tkdkid123's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
I did TaeKwon Do couple years ago and I've been doing Hoshinkido Hapkido for over 2 years now and It's very different. Ok, Hapkido use a lot of the TKD kicks but we learn so much more... I'm a security officer and I use hapkido frequently in my work. I'm not allowed to kick or punch unless i'm in total hell.... so i use joint locks, pressure points, take down etc ...Which I learn in hapkido. So if you want to compete and kick a lot...Go TKD If you want to be more complete in different styles (ground, foot, hands etc) go for hapkido..... If you're a security officer, cops etc...hapkido is for you....
