Late reply about the knuckle pushups, but one of my students had some pretty terrible punches. Like if he ended up hitting someone, he would hit with the 2nd set of knuckles. Basically his fist was bent upwards. So I made him do knuckle pushups. His wrists were too weak to even do one, so I got him started on doing them against a wall, and eventually from the ground on his knees, and now to full on knuckle pushups. His punches are flawless now. Every single time he hits a pad, he gets those nice 2 little knuckle indents.

Kids and gradings

This is why I don't like teaching kids. -
I have a belt test in about 2 weeks.

That's exactly what I told him as I was one of the witnessing black belts Then the next day I kept poking his thighs asking if it hurts. Yes, I'm mean. lol -
So you're dead... KEEP FIGHTING!
darksoul replied to MasterPain's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Agreed here as well. The adrenaline in the body and will to survive can overcome some pretty nasty injuries, at least until you can find medical attention. You're dead? Fight harder than if you were alive. It might actually save your life in the end. -

Pass on my regards to your friend. Resepctfully as I know your instructor had a specific criteria for grading students. And i am not there to judge what happens in other Styles/Dojos etc. I have a different criteria and in my Dojo I would never Jump Students at the higher grades. For me, doing the technques aren't enough, its about how one perceives each teachnique and how one "feels" inside that are moer important This student is actually an assistant instructor at the affiliate school, so he definitely was worthy of the rank. -
Great story Thanks for sharing!

Transitioning from a kid dojo to an adult dojo
darksoul replied to kempoangel's topic in Instructors and School Owners
Good for you! Our dojo doesn't even take kids. Well the affiliate school that is run by a 2nd dan of our main dojo but Master Paquette himself only takes adults. I'm totally for kids taking martial arts, but I think an adult-centric dojo will have better martial artists. -
Belt tests...too often.

I'm gonna go with the belt factory too. -
Off-shoot of Villari. I started with United Studios of Self Defense under Kevin McAllister and Master Richard Black, both of which were trained by Professor Charley Mattera. USSD kind of stagnated though. They haven't evolved like the Villari tree did. My current master is Master Claude Paquette (7th Dan) who was trained by Thomas Ingargiola. I was awarded Shodan by Master Andy Chryssolor (USSD) and (hopefully) will be awared Nidan by Master Claude Paquette when he finds me ready (I'm really not in a hurry.) I've got an interesting lineage So now I believe my association is Kempo Jutsu-Kai International.

You can always do Iron Palm training with fingers too. I wouldn't recommend it as it'll probably cause a break at some point. I'm mostly a knuckle striker (standard punch and leopard's paw) so I do knuckle pushups and 2nd knuckle pushups. They hurt. lol

Salut Brigitte! Ouais, beaucoups de Montréalais depuis quelque temps Bienvenue! Welcome! Où t'entraines-tu? Where do you train?
-
If you have learned all the techniques required for Nidan, then you should be able to test. I don't think you should have it just given to you.
-
I'm lucky with Shaolin Kempo, there really isn't that many groups. You've got the Villari guys, the USSD guys, the ZUltimate guys, and We Love Kempo guys. Even in Canada we only have about 30-50 total black belts cross-country.

We just tested a 3rd Kyu to Shodan in one fell swoop a couple weeks ago. He demonstrated the skills and the knowledge and our master decided to grant him Shodan. If your instructor thinks you are ready and worthy of the rank, he will give it to you. -
Ok, I'm not a historian and I don't practice a pure Japanese style, but I will say that Anime is fantasy and if you're thinking of this being a real style, I fear you'll be disappointed. Himokiri Karate simply does not exist. That being said, there are strikes that use fingers in much of the same manner. The Immortal Man strike in Shaolin Kempo being one of them. Of course you also have spear hands, sword hands, and trigger fingers. A good spear hand can cause grievous damage, as is a well placed immortal man to soft tissue (eyes, throat, armpit, etc...) but you won't see it done like in that cartoon.

In our dojo it is as follows: White (9th kyu) Yellow (8th kyu) Orange (7th kyu) Purple (6th kyu) Blue (5th kyu) Green (4th kyu) Brown 3 (3rd kyu) Brown 2 (2nd kyu) Brown 1 (1st kyu) Shodan Nidan Sandan etc...

Interesting. I might give them a try... well not MyMapRun as I don't run. Ever. I hate it.
