Plum Tree Blocking
darksoul replied to darksoul's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
In Shaolin Kempo it's a high-level blocking system/breathing excercise based on Chinese Kung Fu. This is the most similar to mine, although the intro isn't done like that and we have some extra blocks that aren't shown. He also does it much faster than we've been taught to do it. He continues by doing the counters which I haven't learned yet (I believe I get it at Nidan or Sandan.) -
I have a belt test in about 2 weeks.

Aww, poor girl. I'm sure she will be able to do it soon I, for one, never really understood the board breaking thing. I've done it because, hey, it's kind of fun, but to quote a classic movie - "Boards don't hit back." I understand the idea of focus, but you don't necessarily need a board to work on that. Anyway, I still think it's fun so for that, YAY! -

delete delete delete... ok, RELEARN!

That it is! It's hard to find in Montreal though, you usually have to get lucky at a SAQ (Société des Alcools du Québec.) I've been drinking local Québec beer - McAuslan brews are delicious! -
Hehe, i could write pages explaining what Bujin is, I just had to settle for "other". I ended up putting some Karate and some Kung Fu and Other since Kempo is basically that

Tell me about it! While our hip movements haven't changed, just directions of strikes in Kata's, extra movements in techniques, less movements in other techniques... even the bow is different! I'm getting it though. There's no emptying the cup... just putting in real beer where there previously was Budweiser. -
In my style we will actually perform the final strike, but I've seen many pure Japanese styles that do that "salute" block.

Good luck! -
Done as well!

ps1 covered everything I was going to say. Also, tighten up the arm you are holding cocked. You seem to move it out a little when moving. I'll see if my wife can record me doing a form for you.

Hi Karnier, I'm in Shaolin Kempo but I've won a few first place trophies in Kata against traditional Karate guys. The best thing I can tell you about kata in competition is to balance the speed, the intensity, and the soft. Ask your instructor, or even your Shihan to perform the kata for you as if he was in a competition. See how he does it. Ask what aspects of the kata should be hard, which parts should be soft, and which parts should be intense. When I perform a kata for competition, I exaggerate the "feel" of the kata a lot. You have to make the judges feel your kata. Hope that helps

Luckily, everything that's changed makes more sense. I feel that this style of Shaolin Kempo is much more refined and much more powerful than the style taught at USSD. But yes... I just have to keep at it. Eventually my muscles will remember to more "this" way and not "that" way. -
Since moving back to Montreal and joining the Shaolin Kempo club here, I've had to force myself to forget almost everything of what I had learned to adhere to the new versions of moves. Basically, what I had been taught at USSD is Shaolin Kempo from 20 years ago so now I'm relearning the same techniques, evolved. Some are very close, some are barely recognizable. Has anyone ever faced anything like this? Going from one dojo to another (in the same style) and seeing varying degrees of differences in moves? What's the best way to forget what your muscles have learned through years of training?

An overwhelming force can be hard to stop, but it can be deflected and redirected. When confronted by an overwhelming force, use that overwhelming force against itself!
-
Wow, I really don't envy your position.
-
Cool, I got my dan from USSD, but I'm now with another association. I'm with JusticeZero on what you can do to avoid another break - see if you can work the technique more slowly, or try to avoid the ball kicks.
-
Welcome! I'm a white belt too, mine's just gotten REALLY dirty
-
Kicking with the toes is ALWAYS bad You should be ok if you avoid instep kicks. Which association are you with by the way?
