another "is karate really effective?" post... sorr
tenkamusou replied to tenkamusou's topic in Karate
Yeah! Nice post rich! And I know, that on the original styles, there was only two types of kick, the chudan mae gueri ( front kick to the stomach ), and sokuto hansetsu gueri ( sokuto kick in the knee ), and them, some teachers started to introduce a few more kicks, higher kicks and etc... It's obvious that things change, but tradition cannot be forgoten! In my opinion you can see a lot of the traditional karate in some goju-ryu katas applications. But as you said, things sometimes change for the best, cause we know now that a lot of things that old days master used to do, are not very good for our health... but anyways... nice post... thanx... -

Killer Miller... I'm not saying that shotokan and others are worthless by their content, I'm just saying that nowadays i havent seen anything that can show me that karate you keep talking about. And u said that there are many well known that are capable of defeating anyone nowadays, please tell us who they are, so we can learn from them! And here in Brazil I met Sagara sensei, that always kept saying that karate has become more like cat fights, that people are not practicing the correct way. And he always used to say: "This competitions nowadays are no fun, if you actually hit someone, u receive a foul" and I agree w/ him! I wish I had trained for a few months w/ him, but there was a time he only trained black belts, and all of them say that his training has so damn hard! ANd I'm not lost, I've met the best senseis in São Paulo, had the opportunity to learn from a few of them. Wich was good, but as I said, the direct students from the old days sensei, (cause almost all of them practiced w/ Sasaki, Sagara, Akamine ) are completely different karatekas that we are now. They can probably beat any other person/style or whatever, cause they had a completely different form of training that we have, and Karate back them, was completely different from wut karate is today. So, Killer M. If you can defeat anyone, u're on the way of the traditional karateka, if you are being lucky enough to have this kind of training and etc. Lucky you! I wish that there were more people that thinks/practice like you here! So it would help me on my quest of finding genuine karatekas, not point searches. Altought I'm lucky enough to have my sensei, that is pretty much a traditional sensei, but he knows that 90% of the students can't and wouldn't want to handle traditional training, just want points, and medals, (my sensei was a direct student from seiken Akamine ). He supports me on my quest, there are any one who thinks like me in my or many other dojos I visited. Thank you for your posts. It's always nice to hear every one's point of view, opinions and facts. Please keep posting if you want. Thank you all! See ya -

nowadays, I don't think that 99% of trad. karate practioners can handle a full contact fighter... Just my opinion.. Hope I'm wrong... -

As someone said, it's not the style it's the way it's practiced... and other people got into comparing styles while that was not the meaning of the post. ( please read the message not only the topic's name ) But I think that shoto, shito, goju and etc can handle other styles... IF THEY CUT THE POINT CRAP! If nowadays "traditional" styles, start to train to develop speed, strenght and everything that it has to offer... karate would be as good as anything... cause in my point of view it has it all... And before some people start to mention "traditional karatekas", these trad. Karatekas certainly can handle anyone... BUT, i've never seen a traditional old days like Motobu or Higaona karatekas nowaday. If anyone here is like that please introduce yourself to me, I'll be more than glad to learn anything from you. And I believe if you're not, we ( karatekas ) should practice to be like them, not to be like a Point sparring champ. btw, does anyone here knows Ikemiyagui sensei? is it true that his sensei was called "Makiwara Breaker"? Well... I guess that's it... Sorry If I offended someone, had no intention to do that, that just my opinion, I'm not too good at facts. Thanx for all the answers. See ya -

killer miller, I agree with almost everything you said, but wut you said applies to you... I rarely see someone who acts as you say u do. So, to me, I agree wut U said, but it's just theory... No discussion intented... that's your opinion, and I have mine, okay? thanx for puttin your opinion here! And, I don't want to be a street fighter, I want to be effective... -

wow... thanx for all the answers... and i'm always checkin other styles out... i know a few kyokushin guys here in brazil, and I often talk with them... i read a lot of boxing books... and have a tape with a lot of boxing fights... and kung fu too... i don't know, yesterday I started my new "concept"of training... got to say, the spirit of a knockdown fight is completely different from the point sparring... cause in point sparring you worry about not gettin a hit... but yesterday i was completely careles if the oponent coud hit me or not! i Just went for it! it was awesome... from now on... i'm only going to practice like this! ps. It's incredible! I never thought that Ura zuki was the easiest punch to hit people! hahahahahah it was cool! THANX FOR THE POST U GUYS! IF YOU WISH, KEEP POSTING! -
I was thinking to myself here... and I was just wondering, Is karate really efective against other forms of fighting or a real street fight?? Cause, I got to say... I've doing a few researches, and I understand that Kyokushin karate and other forms of full contact styles can handle other styles, but can Shotokan, shito-ryu or any other style handle for example muay thai? cause I think that the basis of the kumite training are completely wrong... cause that thing about point matches! that's * to me... cause, if a shoto/shito/goju-ryu fighter go to a K-1 or somethin like that, he will definetly get his butts kicked, especially if he starts to do the jumping and all the things that karatekas are doing now... So, to me, what's the point of being a great karateka, winning all kinds of point tournaments, and when the REAL thing comes, a knockout match, wut would I be able to do? cause if you only practice point kumite, you'll hardly be able to knock someone down! I'm thinking about changin my training or somethin, i'm not sure wut to do in the moment, i don't wanna change my style to kyokushin, or do any other kind of martial art, I just want guarantee that I'll be able to protect myself, and be as effective as one can be in any kind of situations... I guess i don't need to keep talkin to much, that's for sure not the first topic about that, and probably won't be the last... So, if you guys have somethin to say about it, a word, anything, or just link another thread about it, that'd be much apreciated, thank you for reading see ya

Do you thik/know, how the shaolin develop such strenght? is it only the repetition and arduous training? cause most of the schools here, use heavybags, pads and all that stuff... and I doubt that in the shaolin temples they have that... how do they do? punch walls? use the internal energy? If anyone knows, please post... thanx

i've to say... I was watching a muhammad ali special... and he could show some guys that power is important, but speed makes the diference... so i guess that, if bruce decided to share punches with oyama he'd lose, but if he punched oyama a few times, then kept moving around him, circling and punching... i think that bruce would win... but i think that if oyama had a good strategy we could beat bruce too...

it's funny how one simple thing can mean a lot of things to a lot of people... I didn't have the intention to compare karate vs. Jeet kune do... I don't care about that... and if I wanted to know about that i'd have made the topic "Karate vs. Jeet kune do"... I was just wondering how would be the fight between those two... as individuals... I still don't know who would have won the fight... cause I like them both... that's why I posted this topic in the first place. And so what that they're dead? We can compare two living guys and we would get the same discussion! each person would have a point of view, and a different argument... a comparisson is a comparison, u being alive or NOT...

i think it's spelled MOkuso... It's good to calm your mind... don't do any miracles... sometimes help to be more centered... but depends of how u do it...
-
Exactly kate... they used kinda as a form of fighting, and if u 're surrounded by 4 or 5 enemies, you won't fight them as most of the guys do kata. That's why u've got to do it fast. And of course that there're many ways to practice a kata, you do it slow when u're learning, but once u have it tattooed in your mind, i recommend u speed it up! and practice... u'll see d diference.

Tetsuhiro Hokama is the name of the sensei I saw on the program... and he was doing Gekisai Dai Ichi...
-
I was having a conversation w/ my sensei about kata, and he told me that 90% of the people doing it ( especially in competitions ) are doing it wrong. He was a direct student from Shikan Akamine, and he told me that in the beggining, they did in the slow rythim ( like most of us learn how to do it ), the medium speed, and then fast. And he also told me, that the speed and rythim that people use it nowadays is the ones that only the begginers used to learn the kata, cause when you do it, it should be done twice as fast! And I dunno if you saw on a show about that top 10 martial arts, when they showed karate, it was the real traditional okinawan karate, I'm sorry but I don't remember the name of the sensei, I'll check it out then tell you guys later. So, he did gekisai dai ichi, in a incredible speed, and kime, at the first look you say: "what the hell is he doing????". But that's the correct way of doing the kata! For example Pian Nidan ( heian Shodan ), people usually take 40,50 secs to perform it. In the "correct" way this kata should last 30secs, 25 secs. And I'm now training this way. I tell you, you've to really know the kata well in your mind, know how to breath correctly, to move real fast, and to punch real strong. It's not an easy tast to do. I recommend you try it! Off course that If u do this way in a championship or a tournament, people will look and say: "WTF?????????????", cause for some viewers, the fast timing and speed might take the "beauty" of the kata. But anyways, as we karate practioners always say: Kata is not a dance! So why should we care about it's looks instead of it's efficiency? And If you guys search old kata videos ( 50's or 60's) you'll see what I'm talking about! I'm a shito-ryu, but I've see videos of shotokan guys doing the same way as we are supposed to do in shitoryu! Well, that's my message for you guys! I ask you to forgive me about my bad english! And I hope that for those who are interested not only in the "sport" aspect of karate, but also in the art, do not forget it's roots, and it's "correct" ways. And for those who already dedicate yourselfs only in the art aspect, I hope that you already know all this stuff that I said! hehehehehhhe Thanx See ya

Kyokushin will prepare you for anything, in a street fight I think that Kyokushin is 1000% better in the fighting point of view... but Shotokan must have it's meriths, ALthougt I can't list any cause, all that has in shoto you'll find in another style... I wish I had money to practice Kyokushin too... or a traditional Goju Dojo... but I'm quite happy w/ my shito-ryu so I don't mind that much heheheeheheheh and SHOTOKAN HAS NO CONNECTION TO KYOKUSHIN! the techniques are the same as in every style... as I said, a punch is a punch in any karate style! And even oyama said that shotokan was no good and switched to Goju-ryu! So we can say that the essence of Kyokushin is traditional Goju-ryu...

antigamente os mestres tinham uns 2 ou 3 favoritos e eles se empenhavam neles.. eles apenas aprendiam os katas q eles achavam q eram úteis para eles...

I have a question but I don't know if it fits the topic, but wut the heck hehehehehehe when you guys are practicin kumite, do you change sides, left foot front, then change to right? cause i'm left handed, and when I'm w/ my left foot in front, i almost never get hit... it's like my strong side... and when I change to the right side, i can hardly move... so i wanna know wut you guys do...

the same efficiency that a style that has 5 katas for example. The fact the style has 50 katas doesn't mean you have to master it all... u can choos your 5 and master them... And it can be good or bad.. depends on your point of view... you have much more ways to learn a lot more movements, because of all the bunkays and different things and moves... but it's hard to learn them all... karate's effiency is not on the number of katas the style has... but on the number of things you can assimilate from it... it can be 1 or 100 katas, if you care more about quantity than quality, you won't learn a thing... that's my point of view... see ya
