  1. The arnis block you describe sounds like the roof block. Use it all the time as entry to aiki technique.
  2. I have this one. Best of all, it gives a good illustration of how to wrap hands.
  3. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PxiBrBAt50A Drunken Kung Fu...
  4. His drunken style is much better than mine.
  5. As I understand it, Oyama had to choose between gloves and face contact or no gloves without face contact in order to have tournaments. The sport aspect was not intended to be the whole of the system. I've seen interviews with some of the Gracie family saying much the same of sport BJJ players using technique that would get you punched to death. The least rules in combat sports now is in MMA, and I tend to be able to cup check some decent MMA guys at will. Any ruleset leaves weaknesses that can be exploited, but to really excel in a sport you have to train mostly within the given rules. If sporting wins are your goal, it's totally fine to train for it.
  6. I'm with you on this one. If it is as you say, nothing illegal, that covers most everything that I would consider leaving over. an instructor is only human. However, if it is something very much against your values and you just can't get past it, then you need to make a choice. If you're just concerned with public opinion over an embarrassment, these things all eventually blow over. Someone will wear a dumb dress to the Oscars and everyone will be talking about that instead.
  7. I'll stick with Steel Knife, thank you.
  8. Anyone else do this? A friend of mine mentioned she wanted to name her bow. Knowing she was a Hunger Games fan, I suggested Katniss, which she really liked. I have a machete named Orcrist, a pistol named Chi and an EDC pocket knife named Garth.
  9. Yay! Let us know when you hear more.
  10. UFC 1 was a single elimination tournament done in a single day. Not safe.
  11. Get some safety goggles. Then, learn to take a throat strike. I try to avoid being hit in the groin, cup or not.
  12. Are the same strikes practiced in a live manner with protective equipment at about half power?
  13. I have to chime in and say I think if you are training to defend against a weapon, you need to have an idea of how to use that weapon in the first place. If you are skilled with a knife and know how to properly use one, you're bound to understand how to better defend against one than someone who has no idea which end to hold it in the first place. Ditto. Sloppy blade work is a pet peeve of mine. Some very basic FMA should suffice. You don't have to be great, but the whole fully extended midlevel stab thing you see all the time just doesn't cut it, pun intended.
  14. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MGrq_L9x8JM Not what you're looking for, but still priceless.
  15. Anyway, belly to back suplex. Figure 4 top wristlock into a straight armbar into kotegaeshi Uchi Mata Keylock Vitor Belfortesque Staight blast Prison Shank Jutsu
  16. More important than specific technique, is making sure your system is actually set up in a systematic fashion. Advanced technique should simply build upon basics, and it should fit together into a fairly simple response pattern. Examples of response patterns- Paul Vunak's RAT- intercept, straight blast, finish with knees elbows and headbutts in trapping range Grip to sub- forget who's this is, but good stuff From my system- Evade, Stun, Unbalance, and Control- basically taisabaki with redirection, knock them around a bit, take their balance with leverage and body position, put them on the ground and control through positional dominance and joint manipulation or strikes. Almost any viable technique will fall into that response pattern. Here's a thread I put up on what I consider the core of my art, maybe you'll get something from it. http://www.karateforums.com/one-steps-angle-drills-ippon-kumite-vt43324.html While I totally understand what Bushidoman is saying about starting your own system, I say RES IPSA LOQUITOR! You will need to be understanding of comparisons to AmeriDoTe, but as long as it's good stuff and you can fight, who cares? I'm second generation in a style born in 93, I believe, and I've never been ashamed of it.
  17. More importantly, are you sure it's made to be swung? Many of the cool looking swords have a rat tail tang, making them a deathtrap to anyone within 100 ft.
  18. A blog from our friend Dr. Steve. http://qwillery.blogspot.com/2012/09/guest-blog-by-steve-bein-why-swords.html And remember, a sword is obsolete until someone comes at you with one. They are then become Death, destroyer of flesh.
  19. Structured curriculum, eh? I don't teach that way. I mean, yeah, you need basics before advanced, but does the belt really matter to get stuff you are capable of understanding? Then again, I got my black 2 years before the rules said I was old enough.
  20. Lol, yes!!! But, I think I can do better. If you can top Mr. Sudo, I want video. Actually, video and post the fight if you can anyway.
  21. Do you really get what"UFC rules" entails? Why not just set up a sanctioned MMA fight?
  22. Is that how you make spotted dick?
