  1. Hey Sai, I have a cat named Shadow too. Also have another cat named Silver and a Dalmatian named Chance. Chance is my baby, we've had her since she 4 wks old, she's almost 11 now.
  2. We practice Sanchin in our system at purple belt (4th kyu). The ibuki breathing is very important in this kata. At higher grades the sensei's will test the person doing sanchin by applying pressure to their arms and legs to test how strong the stance is (it should not move) and also might punch and kick the performer at the certain points during the kata. This is where the breathing is very important. I've seen on some shows where boards are broken over arms and backs during this kata. This may be the unhealthy part of this kata.
  3. For Martial Law: A Hanshi is a 9th or 10th dan and is considered to be a Grand Master. And you are correct, he is a very wise man, and I am blessed to be able to learn from him.
  4. My Hanshi has been learning for 37 yrs. and he is a 9th degree black belt and is quick to tell you that he learns new things all the time. He says if someone ever tells you they know it all, turn and run as fast as you can. I'm not there yet but I do believe that an all knew learning experience begins at black belt.
  5. Welcome!
  6. My Hanshi will take no under 12yrs. He doesn't charge for classes and feels like it might be a problem with parents just dropping thier kids off to be watched. Doesn't want it to become a daycare.
  7. I'm with the older crowd. I started when I was 34 with my son who was 15 at the time. My wife thought it would be something we could do together. I wasn't to sure about that. But as it turned out we are both still training 4 yrs. later and in the best shape of my life. I think my wife wonders if she might have made a mistake sometimes suggesting that we start. I wouldn't give it up for anything now. But take it slow if you have a little age, the body takes a little longer to heal for us older fellows.
  8. Perhaps a bit simplistic for some of the engineers on here but the analogy I like to use is a hammer and nail. You can hit a board with a hammer and do damage in the form of a dent and then take a nail and place it on the board and hit it with the same force with the hammer and penetrate the board and cause a deep more pin point area of damage. With brings up another point of not only punching through your target but also the importance of hitting it with the correct part of the fist and not the whole fist. A spear hand to the chest hurts like heck, and the area that is making contact with the chest is very small. IMHO
  9. Mine is our patch for our school.
  10. I train in Hon-Shin-Do. Here a link telling a little about the style. http://www.crossroadsnewnan.org/honshindo.asp Greg
  11. We learned the Taikyoku kata's.
  12. Welcome!
  13. Welcome! Great to have you here.
  14. Hello all, My legs are killing me today. Last night in class our Hanshi had us partner up and take turns carrying each other across the dojo in a low zenkutsu dachi with the correct c-stepping and all. After that we had to walk the length of the dojo under a stretched out tape in zenkutsu and kiba dachi's, no head bobbing allowed. I'm sore today but it was a great work out. Walking with someone on your back not only helps your strength but is great for balance as well. Have you folks done exercises like these or something similiar in your training? G
  15. Welcome! Glad your here.
  16. Welcome. With both being from Gilbert W.V. I have a funny feeling that G95Champ is your instructor. From what I've seen and read from Champ I think you have a very good Sensei.
  17. Welcome Melinda, we have had some young kids in our class quit because they weren't ready, I think some will be back as well.
  18. Welcome, your english is much better than my spanish! I understand you fine. Check out other styles if available in your area if your not sure kickboxing is for you.
  19. Welcome to the forum!
  20. Welcome!
  21. Ahh, to be 15 again! No, your at the prefect age to start. I was 35 when started taking classes with my 15 yr. old son. We've been going for almost 4 yrs now and are loving it. I told someone the other day I feel better now then I ever had. The only difference between me and my son is the girl and dating thing sometimes gets in they way of training for him. I'm a old married guy so I don't have to worry about that anymore.
  22. Get into a good Kiba Dachi and then drop down 2 or 3 more inches, your almost there. Get low and be sure to keep your back straight and your shoulders square. No leaning!
  23. In Sandan it's at the punch, I believe in Nidan the kiai is on the spear hand. I'm I remembering right on that guys and gals? I think I'm right. We just started working on this two in class. Greg
  24. I'm lucky, we pay nothing for our lessons. Our Hanchi donates his time to teach us. He has 35 years of experience and we all feel very fortunate to be able to learn from this man. He only asks us to help in buying equipment and things like that, actually he doesn't ask but thats the least we can do. He doesn't charge for testing or belts. He says "they are earned not bought". He started this about four years ago and says he will continue to teach for as long as he has students.
  25. We have class three times a week for 2 hrs, unfortunately I'm only able to attend two of those because of my work. I study in the art of Hon-Shin-Do.
