  1. I just want to stick with the Matayoshi weapons first.........thast all
  2. [deleted by me......]
  3. Yes, I do Kobudo exclusively - seperate grades, seperate instruction etc. In my association there are 13 weapons that are used: Rokushaku bo Nunchaku Sai Tsun kuwa/tonfa Kama Iyeku ^The above are the 'basic' weapons used (in order) up to black belt. After black belt, the following weapons are available: Tekko Timbe/Timbe Rochin Nunti Suruchin Kuwa Tettchu Please bear in mind that I will be self-taught with these weapons, and am not looking into grading with them. I'm not planning on taking up the sword/katana, but instead a more original weapon. If there are any queries about the weapons, I'm sure Leaf, SaiFightsMS and myself will be happy to answer. hmmmmmm.....maybe a poll could be used....
  4. I passed my 3rd Kyu test in MO kobudo today. In the syllabus I only have to learn one more weapon - the iyeku (boat oar). This gives me the freedon to use other Okinawan weapons.....any suggestions? I have a list, but I was wondering if anyone else had any ideas. (Pretty pointless post I know )
  5. I think I'll make a similar post to EOTT. "Today's ballet instructors do not understand the basic theory of the pirouette" Of course, I know nothing about ballet........
  6. Yes, Zen Kobudo by Mark Bishop. Very good, especially the list of weapons - very informative. Cya
  7. The reason I didn't ask him this in a PM is because I think other people could benefit from it.
  8. Never block a straight vertical attack to your head with the nunchaku - its all about the pressure etc. Its the same as using the sai - you never block straight, you always bloc to the side and hook. However, if you did mean to block diagonally, then yes......block diagonally. Nunchaku can be very effective in blocking IF DONE PROPERLY. Most people don't do it properly, and everyone gets hurts.....
  9. Hey EOTT I notice your sig now says "Okinawan Kobudjutsu" Fill me in on what style you practise and what weapons you use. Cheers Tobias
  10. Maybe she had a shodan-ho?
  11. Yes it does help Cheers
  12. In the left corner.......weighing in at over 1 ton.......MOST OF THE MEMBERS OF KARATEFORUMS.COM In the right corner.........weighing in at something considerably less.......Jade_Lotus..... Hee hee
  13. First let me say that I am not insulting you education. You quite clearly have more experience and knowledge about japanese than me, and I am not doubting that. Could it maybe be an Okinawan name? I'm just guessing here, but I have noticed that there is a lot of difference in the names of techniques in the resources created Japanese ppl, compared to that of the Okinawan practitioners. Buri, Furi, etc.. Any further input would be appriciated.
  14. Andrew hit the nail on the head - different teams are used by different people. TO ME what seperates the Sansetu-kon from Sanbon nunchaku is that the Sansetsu-kon was generally connected with chain, whilst Sanbon nunchaku was made of rope. The theory behind the Sanbon nunchaku is that if one section was cut off, a normal pair of nunchaku were available. Once again I'm happy to be corrected
  15. Guess I'll just have to go and tell Mikio Nishiuchi that he is wrong then. He'll probably have to remake all his videos, recall his teachings and disregard his Okinawan birthplace. But on a friendlier note - I was under the understanding that it is all translated from Kanji. Therefore, spelling is only an account of pronunciation. But like I said, I'm only passing on what I have been told by hundreds (ok, many not that many) of people. But using your logic, sais is also wrong as well. (therefore zai is how it is pronounced - incorrect?)[/url]
  16. Yup, I agree with PacificShore - Fumio does have a very good book. Oh, and the plural of sai is zai, not sais. (I like pointing that out - it makes me feel big )
  17. Don't wear anything but a black belt - especially in a comps with judges from different styles. When a judge doesn't know what to think/doesn't know anything (which happens all the time), they will simply say to themselves "well, hes a black belt, so he must be good". This is especially true in weapons catagories - I did a nunchaku kata, and I was told that my stances weren't deep enough for a japanese martial art. I pointed out that I was not doing a japanese art, but instead an okinawan art. A few red faces there then. I don't like these mixed MA kata comps. Stupid, very stupid.
  18. Generally, most zai that you buy nowadays are not balanced very well. You have to pay for a more expensive pair for balancing (but to be fair, anything over £30 is expensive to me) The length should be able 1 - 1 1/2 inches past your elbow. Nowadays zai come in 19.5 and 21.5 inches.
  19. Oh, in the 'old' rules, you can't hold for more than 2 seconds. In the 'new' rules you can only grab in counter to a technique - plus it can't be a 'grab'. Confuses the hell out of me - but ZakariRu I have no idea what you are tlaking about.
  20. Considering any throw above the waist is illegal in karate competition, I doubt we'd see any. Besides - you can hit to the back in karate competition.
  21. Leaf - yes Just be aware - a school may say they teach Okinawan Kobudo, when they actually just wave a pair of nunchaku around their heads. And also, you know a REAL kobudo school if they go for effectiveness, not that stupid spinning on the chord of the nunchaku garbage. GRRRRRRR it makes me so mad......
  22. I always thought that it is very difficult (if not impossible) to lose weight AND gain muscle. Can't remember why (biology is not my strong point), but I think it was the constant drilling in by ALL the mens magazines I purchase (I like them because it tells me how to improve my love life hee hee) Ciao
  23. There is a breakdancing move called "Suicide" where you do a front summersalt in the air and land flat on your back. Obviously you need a lot of practice to do this (jiu-jutsu/tomiki aikido etc. may help with this to breakfall correctly) However, if you want to dance, go to a dance school. If you want to learn martial arts, go to a martial arts school.
