  1. You said it right TS757. I was writing a longer post, but it got deleted, so I'll cut it down. I find nunchaku easier because I have trained in nunchaku. If I trained in knife-fighting, then I'd prefer a knife. However, comparing the nunchaku to other Okinawan kobudo weapons, they are definately the easiest to use in a street situation. If you were being attacked by a sword, well that would be a different matte... C ya
  2. Iamrushman Finally, I have found some1 who thinks the way I think. Superb!!! Tobias
  3. Nope, sorry TS757 The sai are a difficult weapon to use, be it in the street or in the dojo. They were designed to be used against swords, but as you're not going to encounter a sword in the street, (maybe a knife, but the nunchkau can deal with that), so that cancels out that. Compared to nunchaku, the sai are a lot harder to do damage with, as are easier to block/evade. Also, the nunchaku has the psychological advance. If you perform a continuous figure-eight swing, then the opponent is gunna be scared. My 2 cents
  4. Yup I'll bak that up. Hello guys. C ya
  5. Goose, Sorry to tell you, but you're not a 10th Kyu in KObudo. YOu have to grade for your 10th Kyu, and you haven't done that yet Just thought I'd tell you.. C ya
  6. Hi guys Just to show guys my thoughts on the Do/Jutsu front. Do means "way". eg. Karate-do - The way of Karate. Jutsu is to do with war eg. Iaijutsu - the combat use of the sword. I train in Karate-do. I use it to improve my life skills, and find it a bonus if I can learn to "fight" If I practiced Karate-jutsu, then I would expect to be able to be just as good a fighter as TBKen. But I dont, so I wont claim to be. So just to show my view, I dont train in karate to become a supreme fighter, and I know of many other students (and instructors) who feel the same. Oh, and before anybody says anything, I will begin to train in "jutsu" soon. C ya
  7. Hi all Just thought I'd add a medical point to the forum. Inside the neck is the stimulas for the Viegus (sp?) nerve. If this nerve is stimulated the heart can stop. (There is some medical reason to this.) Its been known for large men to tighten their neckties and drop dead. The same can happen if you rub the eyeballs. My dad knows more about this than me (he used to be a nurse), and I'll post more when I talk to him. Oh yeah, there are some real BS about fatal techniques, such as the cartilage entering the brain etc... C ya
  8. Just whilst we're on the topic.... HAs anybody heard of a martial art called "Ultimate Fighting System"? When I was at an awards ceremony there was a compilation video sent in by instructors. Shortly after my kobudo demonstration, a logo for the "Ultimate Fighting System" came up, and a load of guys in a dojo were beating the hell out of each other. I dont think that there was another martial art tied in (eg. JKD, Kempo Karate), it was just called "Ultimate Fighting System". Oh, and I'm not getting this confused with Ultimate Fighting Championship. C ya
  9. Moobrack They are a sickle. A piece of wood with a curved piece of metal coming out of one end. I'll show u a pic at the dojo. C ya
  10. Hi all The kama are a beautiful weapon whether you are using them or watching them. A guy called Ashley Beck performs his TKD kama to music, and it looks really good. I'll be moving on to use kama soon, when I get my next belt. C ya
  11. Warlock Order nunchaku from Sensei Leak, he gets them from Leeds Martial Arts. They are just as good as any others C ya
  12. Hi guys Just thought I'd welcome both Moobrack and Warlock to KarateForums. They are both members of my school. Happy posting C ya
  13. Moobrack I'm not quite sure if I follow you, but I'll give it a go. Shuto Uke is a block using the side of the hand (called shuto in japanese). It can be effective as a parry technique. Shuto Uchi is a strike usually against the neck using the side of the hand. It can be performed in many ways, usually like the shuto uke, or with a swinging arm technique. Hope this helps C ya
  14. Moobrack Dont get confused...IAMRUSHMAN is correct, the pr24 is based on the tonfa. The cops dont use them over here in England, they use a truncheon. C ya
  15. Moobrack Remember...you're bak at our school now....Saturday mornings are the day that I teach Kobudo....you're welcome, of course. C ya
  16. Hi guys Any views on what people think is the best weapon to use in a kata competition. I dont mean :- 1) which is the best weapon for a street fight 2) which is the worst weapon for a street fight 3) which weapon is best used in sparring and please no "a knife is the best weapon" or "your brain" (not that I dont think these are decent weapons) I ask this because a few months ago I went to a mixed martial arts kata/forms/patterns competition, and in the weapons catagory the Chinese Whip thing (dont know its name) dominated. All the other japanese and korean weapons paled in their wake, even though they were used very well. I believe that this was mostly because the fast spinning moves of the whip impressed the judges more than the slow, precise moves of the Aikido sword. I'm using the same theory when I enter a competition in september - I'm using the Nunchaku not the Bo because I get to swirl it about.
  17. Hi all I am known as a poor kumite fighter. Whenever I referee bouts I always watch the competitors, and observe the techniques that they use. I believe that I can learn many things from my juniors/students, and that other people should as well. Recently, a student joined us who was highly graded in aikido. I have made it clear to him that I am prepared to learn some techniques from him if he feels he wants to teach me. KarateRonin....remember....I learn something new from you in every lesson as well, ranging from how to teach a class to practical aplication of kata. Your karate and life experience outweighs my karate skill/experience. I have plenty to leaen from you. Anyway...thanks for the compiment C ya
  18. Hi I often have the same problem. I am only 16, and sometimes it is difficult to get the trust from the parents. I have combated this by doing an adults Instructing qualification (I passed with a distinction). You probably wont have the oppotunity to do this qualification, ask your instructor. But I say - Go for it!! Try out private lessons. They could work (but make sure you get permission off your instructor) C ya
  19. HI guys I'm not very good at combat martial arts...but I thought I'd give my view. I was once at an award ceremony and on a video they showed a martial art called "Ultimate Fighting System" (not UFC). It seemed to be designed for the street. They are of course other "new" martial arts such as Karate Jitsu. C ya
  20. Hi I just think its an honour to have my instructor here at Karate Forums. Thanks for joining Sensei C ya
  21. Yup the tonfa were once handles for grindwheels (or something similar) They're a nice weapon to use. C ya
  22. Hi guys Just thought I'd like to welcome Darryl (Goose) to our forums. He is one of my new students, and is looking like a very promising martial artist. HELLO DARRYL C ya
  23. Hi Darryl, my man. Nice to see to have joined the site. Keep on training, and we'll get you ready for what u want C ya
  24. Hi Guys In our dojo we often quiz each other on questions to do with the martial arts. Recently, a student asked us (the instructors) "What was the martial art practiced by the shaolin monks?" At first, I though Shaolin Su-kenpo (sp?), but apparantly that is not the answer. I also thought that the monks invented their own martial art anyway. But does anybody know? please help me C ya
  25. Hey guys, to my knowledge, the katana is not a kobudo weapon. This is because kobudo was designed by the working classes in okinawan when all weapons (except for the samurais) were banned. Most of the kobudo weapons were farm tools used by the farmers. Kama - sickle tonfa - some sort of handle nunchaku - horse bite/rice beater bo - water carrier sai - some sort of trowel iyeku - an oar the above are the main weapons taught by the International Okinawan Kobudo Association Other kobudo weapons include: koa - a hoe. tekko - essentially brass knuckles. shuchu - a small kubotan-like thing about 5" long. san-setsu-kon - the 3-section staff. surujin/suruchen - a weighted chain with a spike or blade on one end - similar to the Chinese chain whip or the Japanese manrikigusari; tinbe - actually, this is two weapons...the tinbe itself, which is a small shield traditionally made of the shell of a sea tortoise, and the rochin, which is a short spear with a cutting blade - the weapon actually resembles a Zulu spear more than anything else. kusarikama - a kama on the end of a rope or chain. nunti - a short spear. The only way in which the original kobudo practitioners would use swords would be when they pilfered one off a japanese samurai. The martial art of the japanese sword is called Iaido. C ya
