  1. Thanks! I have heard of those places & I intend to visit them!
  2. Ok, I had to revive this thread. My last post on this topic was 7/28. I went to the doctor the first week of August. The doctor cut the callus on my foot open, looked around & told me I had a planters wart! So, the doctor shaves the callus down and hits the wart with some kind of acid. After the acid, my foot hurt for a few days then it started to heal. Everything was great for a week, then, my foot started to hurt again.... back to the Dr, the wart came back, more acid. Everything was great for a week, then, my foot started to hurt again.... back to the Dr, the wart came back, more acid. This same process was repeated 3, yes 3 times!!! I sit here with my foot somewhat healed & scared to death that I'm going to wake up tomorrow with my foot hurting. I managed to keep attending class through this process but it hasn't been easy. My intent of posting this is to make others aware. If ANYONE feels mild pain in the ball of the foot and / or the heal and you notice that the area of discomfort is raised or swollen... don't cut your foot open and look inside, have a professional cut your foot and look inside.
  3. This is a great topic! We've had 2 people in the last 6 months suffer rib injuries - 1 person bruised ribs, the other a cracked rib. I do ab work, lower back extensions & side crunches. Do you do anything different that helps you prepare for stomach and rip strikes?
  4. Great quote.Mike Tyson has few really good quotes when it comes to fighting.... however, most of his quotes are better when taken out of context.
  5. Everyone has a plan 'till they get punched in the mouth. - Mike Tyson
  6. Shindokan teaches that going backwards is risky for varied reasons, therefore, we don't go backwards in any shape, way, and/or form. We will stand our ground. We will slide angular in a forward manner. We will slip angular in a forward manner. We will step forward and/or angular. We will intercept more than evade to better aide our Tuite. Having a highly keen understanding of Ashi Sabaki is crucial at all times. If not, you're movements will be compromised before they even begin. Getting up close and personal takes more than one could imagine because retreating is what seems to be the acceptable solution. When a Shindokanist won't. Offering a direct target to my attacker is what we want, and this is achieved by offering as little as possible any straight-on targets. This is why we angle in our offense as well as in our defense. This doesn't mean that Shindokanists aren't attacking straight-on targets because we are attacking straight-on targets, and this is because at the contact point, our target is straight-on to US. The more I think I this post, the more I agree. I'm being pushed by a BB in my class to hold my ground when attacked and always keep advancing when i attack. It takes some getting used to but I found that I'm becoming a much better fighter. Great advice!
  7. This is what my sparring matches are turning into. I don't feel like this is a bad thing because getting hit, now granted it isn't not full contact, is starting to feel like the norm.
  8. Hello, hello. I've been bouncing in and out lately myself.... sigh, work is cutting into my socializing.
  9. Welcome Frank! All the fun is in the training.
  10. Hi Tom. i have a trip planned to Tenn for next month. 2 days in Gatlinburg (Going to see the Smoky Mtn), 2 days in Nashville (staying in the District), 2 days in Memphis (staying on Beale St). Any advice?
  11. Thanks DWx. that sounds like a great drill! I will try to work that into one of my classes.
  12. Your school doesn't fool around when it comes to self-defense, Tzu-Logic! I was thinking the same thing Thanks for the advice
  13. Thanks for the advice everyone. I'm been working on circling around an opponent then moving in with multiple combinations. The thing is, my sparring matches have turned into slug-fests where I'm trading shots with my partner. I move in with the idea of avoiding the attack and then countering but it just doesn't seem to happen when I spar. Anybody have any training tech that I can use to practice getting out of the way, then countering? Thanks!
  14. Hi all! I've been working a lot lately so I've haven't been online much... but I have found the time to keep up with my training I'm not sure my title reflects my question so let me clarify. The situation I'm thinking of can occur in a pub or in class. You are standing in one spot. Someone steps forward toward you in an aggressive manner. Do you (1) stand your ground and strike as person gets in range (I'm think front kick then punch) or (2) step to the side and strike (I'm thinking side step, roundhouse, then punch)? What are your thoughts? I'm working with a few BBs (I'm a green belt ) and I'm having a hard time figuring out how to handle their multiple step forward attacks.
  15. I have heard of this phenomenon but it didn't happen at my dojo. However my instructor told me that the original karate kid movie caused an increase in kid students.
  16. Nice! & I thought I had trouble with 6 kids at once!!!
  17. If I were you I would try to pick a school that is close to my house, work or school so its convenient for you to attend.
  18. Happy B-day! Hopefully you treated yourself to something special
  19. Maybe I'm being hypersensitive but the way the whole situation went down left a bad taste in my mouth. It wasn't like this was someone who took MAs as a kid and now they were coming back to MAs as an adult so they felt more comfortable saying no experience rather then having us assume he had a skill set. This was a young man that actively trains in something...? Based on what he said his level of experience was, he was paired with a kid his size but, maybe, 3 to 5 years younger. After the one-one drills started this young man dismantled this younger kid. After the tap out the younger kid did not want to get back on the floor. I hear what your are saying but if that young man would have been honest he wouldn't have been in a situation where he was man-handling a less experienced kid.
  20. I had to post again because this type of an issue came up last week. We had a teenager show up for our MMA class. This kid claimed he had wrestled... "a little when he was younger". After we warmed up, worked the heavy bags, then worked the hand mitts (keep in mind this kid was able to keep up with no problem) we went into some controlled sparring - we start standing, Sensei yells & we lock up with over / under hooks trying to gain an advantage, Sensei yells and we go for a take down then submission, if possible. You should have seen this kid. Head up, hands up, he was constantly circling and and throwing solid combinations - jab, jab, cross, uppercut, shifting his feet, jab, jab, hook. I watched him lock up with a very large 12 yr old... in less then 5 seconds he had this kid hip tossed, then had him in choke... tap. I felt bad for the 12 yr old, poor kid didn't want to spar anymore that day. This teen was nice, but even after class, he kept swearing he never trained in "anything". I'm sure he was told by someone not to reveal his training but I found it inappropriate. I need to trust the people i train with. To me, this teen is a liar and he used his deception to take advantage of someone who he clearly out matched. I could be over-reacting but I was half hoping Sensei was going to pull him aside after class and tell him about deceiving everyone in class.
  21. After class I'd explain what should have been obvious to someone, regardless of age, who earns a BB. If I'm given anything but an apologetic demeanor from this young man, i would politely tell him he is not invited back.
  22. I used to keep my training to myself and close friends but injuries forced me to provide an explanation to other friends and co-workers. After i started to talk about training I noticed that most people has zero interest in discussing MAs.
