  1. Welcome!
  2. Adding to what Kuma posted, I like to throw 50 kicks on the heavy bag, drop and do 50 crunches, up and throw 50 punches, step back and do 50 squats = one cycle. I try to do 3 cycles without resting.
  3. I gotta go with a heavy bag. If you want to kick and punch, you should be kicking and punching something.
  4. Wow! I think a situation like this would ruin your reputation for good. How did this person attract students after this? Was the school that big that he didn't miss his advanced students leaving? Having a brown belt walk out the door says a lot. Out of curiosity, did you let his brown belts keep their rank?
  5. Great vid, I need to watch it 100 times... that guy is fast!
  6. Thanks everyone! I'm still learning but its been fun.
  7. I'm still learning the basics but at the end of each class we usually line up for a little free sparring. Free sparring usually ends up with me and another newbi wrestling for position.
  8. I like the machine for small purchases and the person for large ones. If I'm buying a few items, the person slows the transaction down because I have to hear about bonus cards, etc. However if I'm buying a weeks worth of stuff the person helps because I can bag while they scan.
  9. Thanks. Unfortunately I'm so new to ground fighting that most of the head / neck contact is done during sprawl - take down drills so i can't really avoid the contact.
  10. I couldn't agree more. I've been working on my ground game for a few months and its so strange not having a reflex reaction to anything, I mean anything. Every move I make on the ground is thought out and easily recognized by my more experienced partners. With that being said, I'm starting to recognize what doesn't work well for my body type. I'm a stand up fighter so the technique I want to perfect is the sprawl. I work on sprawling in each class. I do exercises that help me build my strength for sprawling.
  11. I'm taking a few BJJ classes to work on my ground game. There are a few guys, about my size (tall), that wrestled in high school so they move well on the ground. It seems like i lock up with these x-wrestlers and we both end of sprawling and trying to control the others head... well my neck is killing me after class. Does anybody do anything to train their neck?
  12. Great post, I agree. Generally I use this type of thinking to push myself. Many times a session on the bag will leave me feeling like I'm going to throw up.
  13. Hmmmm. I gotta say no. I love my dojo and all the people that go there. I would not want to create a situation where i would feel awkward going to class. The dojo is my sanctuary where nothing else matters but training.
  14. Good point - i have 18 oz gloves and they took some time to get used to but when I did.... gloveless hands feel lighting fast.
  15. I'd jump in immediately! My instructor is an older retired gentleman so if he's in a fight, something is wrong. I'm not sure my last statement reads like i intend it to read. Don't get me wrong, I definitely believe my instructor can handle himself, I've been on the receiving end! What I mean is, my instructor is low key and he preaches being the bigger the person (check your ego at the door) so if he's in a fight, he's being attacked. I would like to think that I would help anyone that is being attacked.
  16. Hello, hello, welcome!
  17. OMG someone else knows my nightmare! My pain flares up a few times a year and when it does, I'm done. I've gotten good and nursing it back but when it pulls I know I'm not going to sleep very well that night.
  18. Its been my experience (outside the dojo) that big muscle guys want to grab you and man-handle you. Shirt grab & shove or choke & lift.
  19. Over the years my instructor has established relationships with 2 kind of local dojos. Once a year each dojo has a small tournament. I attend each of the 3 tournaments and that is it. These tournaments are not what I found as typical. There are usually 30 people total and there are no politics involved with the judging. I've experienced one of the other dojo instructors letting a match go to 5 points because the match up was good and the experience benefited everyone. Overall, I have a great time at these tournaments and i don't walk away with a bad taste in my mouth.
  20. I agree, an open invite means you left a good impression and nothing bad comes from that.
  21. This was going to be my observation its not so much the time doing the actual activity its the time doing the rest of the stuff that comes with the activity. I have to say that honestly I miss class a lot often because going to a one hour class turns into a 5 hours travelling affair. You have to come back, shower, prepare food, eat food, sit down if you have been on your feet all day its a must, pack your bag, travel to the station which is a half hour walk. Then get the train, the walk to training, after which you are knackered, and then travel all the way back. Then still afterwood you have work to do. Just using myself as an example its not always practical to go. It very much depends on a persons situation. Thing is I agree that as a teacher you want a certain amount of commitment from the person. However if you are doing it as a business then it really doesn't matter to you if they attend or not, you are still making a living. Provided they are paying through a contract. You guys beat me to the punch! Travel time eats a lot of my day up. Also, it takes time to shift gears. If I'm doing task A and i'm interrupted by B, C, or D.... A suffers, which means i have to refocus and get back into the groove. i think most people don't realize how much time those little tasks involve. How much time is spent in bathroom everyday!?
  22. Bang, you got my attention! I'm not a big movie guy and on occasion when i watch a movie its at home so forgive me if I'm out of the loop... what is the political discussion? After reading your post I watched the movie trailer and looked on google news and i didn't see anything that would raise debate.
  23. In Tang Soo Do head turns proir to any movement are required.
