Awesome! Great job! -
My wrists and knuckles are tough enough to allow me punch a sand bag for conditioning. I hit the sand bag hard, roughly 100 times, a few times a week. My wrists don't feel jammed when I'm done (although they used to) and my knuckles don't split open (although they used to) and that is good enough for me. As BB of C stated, the cost and benefit of such harsh training doesn't make sense for me.

Once a year our school has the school logo screen printed on any item that a student wants, mostly t-shirts. We workout in a warehouse that can get really hot in the summer so we don't wear our gi tops from june - august. I think the t-shirt thing came out of our instructor wanting everyone to having matching t-shirts while we were working out. Based on the price he charges on the screen printing I'd say he does it for school spirit more than anything.

Sorry if I'm violating the rules of the forum with this post but... ... does anyone find it odd that person A with 2 posts under their name asks a question, person B with 2 posts responds person A, then person C with 1 post provides a rebuttal to person B? Hmmmm.

I will add to your rant - We have one instructor at my dojo that I love to work out with. The problem is, he loves to pontificate when he teaches a class. When we do floor drills he will talk and talk while we stand in place frozen for exxxxxtended periods of time. We line up for a 15 min kicking exercise and he will talk about why we need to develop kicks for 10 min. At times during class it becomes very frustrating. rant off

Hmmm. Unfortunately I don't think I can offer anything other than more conditioning. I have this issue with my shins. The hard part for me is finding the median between contact / conditioning and rest / repair.

Drilling technique, sparing, cardio, weights... work. Something doesn't fit

Simple... and well said.

I have to agree with points made by MMA_Jim & Sokusen. While I don't think that karate is all about fighting, I am disappointed when I see someone with little to no fighting ability being advanced.
-
I agree with Jay's sentiments however I think flexibly and endurance are key. I spend a great deal of time working on these things outside of class, most don't.

I have my eye on you every April 1st

Welcome. I think you find this forum to be a very well run community (Thx Patrick) with a lot of knowledgeable posters.

Welcome.... I'm a practicer of Tang Soo Do, 3rd Gup Blue Belt, and I participate in an MMA class once or twice a week.

I don't understand people.

I don't teach an MMA class but I participate in one, attending once or twice a week. On a side note, I've been attending MMA for about a year now and I've really gained some ground skills. Truth be told I had zero ground skills when I started so any improvement was positive. The one thing I'm grateful for is learning how to control my breathing when I'm involved in a ground attack. I may not be very efficient attacking on the ground but I can defend somewhat well and I can lock up for 3 minutes without losing my wind. Ok, back to my point. I see a lot of people that seem to have a strong interest in MMA however they are turned off by work it involves. I've seen many people show up for a few classes and then I never see them again. As others have stated I don't think its you, I think its the work involved. -
I looked back at this thread and I wasn't sure what I had posted. I think I'm still on pace with my original resolution however I'm a long way from a full split. Also (I think) I'm on pace to make 2 Gup, low brown belt.... so I want to add that to my "this year I'm going to do".

Just what is a test...exactly?
GeoGiant replied to Montana's topic in Share Your Testing, Grading, or Promotion
Our dojo has white, yellow, green, blue, low brown, high brown & black. I don't think my instructor has given a BB in less than 5 years. I believe the average is 6 to 8. Every belt above green includes 3 kata. When you test for black you start with the blue belt kata and (re) demonstrate your knowledge. This makes sense to me. Green marks the point where a student deviates from basic kata movements. Blue marks the point where advanced kata movements are performed. -
I agree. I think we are doing the same thing, only in a different way. I'm tall and thin and its hard for me to pick up muscle mass. I used to try to lift heavy weights with the hope of stacking on 10 or 15 pounds of muscle but I could never do it.... and I always ended up with a sore shoulder, wrist, etc. Plus heavier weights made me stiff. On the advice of a BB at my dojo I started low weight / high rep. I haven't bulked up but I'm more cut and I have flexible strength (if that makes sense). I switch up the exercises and the order I that do the exercises but I always try to hit each body part. Keeping track of my reps gives me the challenge of trying to beat myself. The low weight allows me to push it without running the risk of getting a weight stuck on me. I did this today (weight of the bar is included) - Bench with 90 lbs and shoulder width grip - 20, 20, 18, 16, 15. I completed the 100 reps by doing at least 13 wide grip presses with same weight. Standing bell press with 20 lb bells - 20, 20, 18, 17, 16. I completed the 100 reps by doing at least 9 Arnold bell presses with same weight. Standing row with 90 lbs and wide grip - 20, 20, 18, 16, 14. I completed the 100 by doing at least 12 rows with a extra wide grip. Hammer curls with 25 lb bells - 20, 20, 18, 16, 12, 10. I complete the 100 by doing at least 24 twisting bell curls using 15 lb bells. Tri extensions with 15 lb bells - 20, 18, 17, 15, 13. I completed the 100 by doing at least 18 tri dips with a chair. Shrugs with 45 lb bells - 18, 16, 15, 14, 13. I completed the 100 by doing at least 24 shrugs using 35 lbs. Anytime I can do 5 sets of 20 I add weight. I rest 1 min between sets & 3 min between exercises. It took me roughly an hour and half to get thru the workout. Of course it took sometime to work up to the above.

I've been working sets of 20 for a minimum of 100 reps. For example, I might put 90 lbs on the bar and press 20, 20, 19, 16, 12... then I complete the 100 using a different grip. I do the same with shoulders, bi, tri, etc. I hit the weights 2 or 3 times a week. I've found that this lifting technique has helped me when grappling.

I'm not sure this is what you're looking for but... First, before you rent, buy or lease a space check to make sure the space is zoned for what you want to do - check with your local or county zoning office. If your looking in a commercially zoned area, this shouldn't be a problem. If the building has been vacant or a year or longer or if the building was never used as a commercial space, you will need to have the space inspected by a building inspector - zoning office should be able to help you out here. I would recommend getting a copy of your local zoning ordinance because all the other "things" (access, parking, signage, lighting) will be outlined in the zoning ordinance. Keep in mind that I'm outlining what happens in Pa, it may not be the same everywhere.
