Joesteph, I am drawn to Uechi Ryu Bunkai because of all the holds and grabs. And Goju Ryu because every kata has a throw in it, we just have to find it. Goju Ryu has alot of joint locks as well as throws so it keeps you busy contemplating on how Bushi Sensei learned from Kanryo Higaonna. And then once you get into the meibukan Goju Ryu they have unique katas such as Byakko, which is very similar to Jion actually and Then Genbu kata which is the black turtle. They have a red sparrow form as well (Shujakku)

Blue eagle battle does sound right too... since Seiryu means blue dragon....

I will work on trying to get the Kanji. The style I teach is a mixture, but im mostly Uechi Ryu and Goju Ryu. But I teach various styles.

I was only in ninjutsu for a year before I moved away. And it was an affiliate of the Bujinkan under Hatsumi Soke.

So I have heard of two different translations to the above Kata. *Calm within the storm and *Marching Far Quietly Have any of you heard of the second translations before?

What Is
Ichi_Geki replied to RichardZ's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
I agree. I'm a god fearing individual as well, and I respect my god. And I never allow Bushido to take aspect in me as a religion. But I do use Bushido to help my students get into an original mind sent, like why Karate and Kobudo were used for. -
Bizarre grading requirements

In kata such as saifa and gekisai which are both smashing kata, you have to have the strength to be able to smash your opponent. Planks work the core which also work the balance, these training exercises work good for kata such as kururunfa You may already be well conditioned enough to smash the opponents without doing the extra pushups...but I do not think I am. So thats why I incorporate them within my dan testing, because if I dont feel I am, how can I feel comfortable that my student it without the extra work? -
Lol good one. It is my signature one...I just dont think I have it down all the way yet...

He was the chief of police at the time, and he said that it would have to be posted for it to be legitimate.

I would say work out more, walk a bit, stretch more and take it easy on that knee for a little bit. Or it could just be because its getting colder out too...I get that sometimes, im half your age.

Ok atleast they did not call it a concealed weapons...How is a sword a knife? And how could it be dangerous in public if you have is strapped to your side. They are gonna see it and can probably shoot you before you get close enough to try to hack away at someone...and I have a Wakizashi made in 1924 does that mean I can carry it with me? And what is a samurai sword to them?...If I have a bud K ninja toh in my house would I get arrested?

Bizarre grading requirements
Ichi_Geki replied to moriniuk's topic in Share Your Testing, Grading, or Promotion
You sure she wasn't just joking? For pushups I feel they are needed, how else is a black belt test hard without something physically demanding? For shodan we are set at 150 pushups at one time, and a 5 minute plank...but not before a 5 mile "Warrior" run at 6 am. All of my Dan testing are done on a Saturday morning starting at 6am and the test usually finishes at noon. Then we have an awards ceremony which is basically a big lunch. -
Martial Arts in Gwangju
Ichi_Geki replied to marstree117's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Gwang Ju?...I have a cousin there. Unfortuneatly me and him stopped talking though, and I am not very keen to that area...sorry. But I will say that Tang Soo Do and Kumdo are very prominent in that area. -
This is a good way to rev the mind up and you get more done at one time. Im not saying the quantity over quality is better, but this way your mind works quicker. And also those three katas have some what similar embusen and physical approaches. As for the kata I know. I know about thirty of them, but I feel only comfortable with about 6 of them. I have been practicing them all for a long time, but with everyone, there are just a few katas that stick to you better than the rest. The six I hold dear to me are Seiunchin Sanseiryu Genbu Sepai Kanshiwa Geki Sai And I also know various traditional Kobudo Kata.

I have two sets of uniforms, that are identical. They both have the okinawan flag on the back, and a patch on the front that says "Haku Tsuru" In Japanese because that is my signature kata. I wash them both twice a week, because I teach seven days a week. And I also take lessons from two instructors that our rank me in different styles. So I use mine quite often. And they hold up very well. Although I dont buy my uniforms out of Century or anything like that either. I buy mine through Classical Fighting Arts.

Me and six of my student went to a chinese restaurant to talk over food. Well. After we got done eating at the $5.95 buffet. We were charges 22% gratuity because our party exceeded five people. They threatened to call the Policia as they said it. And we countered with where the notice to your customers that we have to have under 5 people for it not to be considered a "party". The manager picked up the phone to call the police, but one of my students just happened to be a police officer. He flashed his badge and told him to put the phone down, and that he should just be a nice guy and let us pay the original price. The manager agreed to it, and we did not even leave a tip on the table for them. We have not been back since, and we go to a nice japanese restaurant weekly for lunch.

What Is

I agree many people romanticize it into great valor and rather dying before you tap out. But for the bushido we practice in my dojo is not romanticized. I often buy copies of the books "Code of the samurai" By Thoma Cleary It is a very easy to understand book and I advise anyone who wants to learn more about it to do so. I focus on familial duty. I focus on being a better person I focus on being neatly trimmed (Facial hair) And I also focus on a mind frame of simpleness. When I speak of simpleness I mean as an example that when you are sparring, and you get that point in, your not hopping around on one leg exclaiming victory...thats not how it works. You have to have a mind of Zanshin, once you get the point in keep your composure like its a real fight. And familial duty, I once scolded a kid who came to my dojo on his father's birthday. While he was suppose to go out to eat with his father, he skipped out on him and came to learn from me. Those are the codes I post in my dojo. Obviously we are not gonna pick up our daisho and run at the next person that insults us. That is asinine. But what is good is that we have a warrior like spirit in everything that we do in life. At work, strive to be the best, sparring, strive to win and being able to deliver that killing blow right on time. During machiwara strive for every strike to be better then the next. These are how the samurai lived, we just have to learn how to apply them to our daily principles. -
Martial Arts Street Preformers
Ichi_Geki replied to whess's topic in Martial Arts Gaming, Movies, TV, and Entertainment
I wonder how he did?. I know where I am I use to do tameshiwari and machiwara demonstrations to raise money for the salvation army. I also worked on Kyushu Jutsu with my students in front of the crowds to get some response from them also. But people want that flash in the pan type of thing. And people are trying to find something more practical than that parkour and freestyle stuff. -
Rank stripes on Black Belt Like or dislike?
Ichi_Geki replied to IcemanSK's topic in Equipment and Gear
I dislike anything on the blackbelt. The belt is suppose to be symbolic some may say as to the soul of the martial artists, much like the katana to the samurai. And also as an aspect that I have. When I meet with a new student, I wear my uniform, because thats what I do. I want my student to look me in the eyes when I shake his or her hand, and I dont want them looking down at my belt so see how many bars are on my belt depicting my degree. I would have four in that case. As my highest rank is 4th degree. But it is irrelevant, if someone wants to know my rank, all they have to do is ask. As to answer how would they pick me out being the teacher? I know all of my students and I meet with their parents if they are minors. So everyone knows who I am. Also, I will be the only one giving orders and commands to the class. As Dansha we should be able to send our knowledge out into our students and that picture should be drawn around the teachers. We should act like teachers and not students, this is the only way they can tell us apart. I was just recently giving a seminar to a "American freestyle Karate school" And everyone had on these belts with these sewed on chevrons and different color patches on their belt and then they had their uniforms on with different patches for every weapon they knew and every group they were in. In my opinion the patches and colors take away from the seriousness of the martial arts. I am all for fun. BUT. I do not want my martial art to be made a mockery of. But also on the other side of the martial arts using the bars. I do allow my black belts to put a piece of white electrical tape around their belts. And they can do this if they want to. But I do not supply it for them. nor will I ever. If they want to do it they can. And they can do it once for every dan level they achieve. Of course of Shodan they would not do it. but for Nidan I would allow for one piece of tape. Once I become sixth dan I will never put a piece of red tape on my belt. Maybe when im Ninth dan I will start looking at red belts...but...I will be lucky to ever make it that far haha. Again this is my opinion and it transgresses into my school because I direct it. But like I said my students that are dansha are allowed to put white tape on it after shodan. -
I have noticed this Bo Kata done more frequently at tournaments these days. It use to be Sakugawa no kun sho. But I notice alot of the XMA styled martial artists tweaking this kata and still saying its traditional. Has anyone else seen this happening around them?
