Here is some more infor for you ad ... and many thanks for posting my push up post Many medical sports specialists used to fear potential bone injury in kids who lifted weights, but these same fears are outweighed by the physical benefits of weight training. Bone health is tremendously important ... particularly in girls ...and osteoporosis has been called a "pediatric disease" by many physicians because youngsters don't get involved enough in weight bearing activities in their developmental years. Bone maturity involves the progression towards a fully ossified skeleton (completion of bone growth), which includes the sealing of growth plates and appropriate bone mineralization (the deposition of minerals in bone to increase bone density and strength). Kids who have less than normal bone density are more prone to skeletal injury, particularly in athletic endeavors demanding high force effort, including but not limited to gymnastics, football, basketball and hockey. Also under this umbrella would be tennis, baseball and weight lifting. There is no doubt lifting weight can help all young people but it is critical they are taught correct technique and are aware of their own limitations. In general a 12-year-old would not be given the same kind of routine as a 14-year-old, and the 14-year-old would be handled differently from 18-year-old teenagers. Two of the most publicized injuries specific to kids are Osgood-Schlatter's disease and damage to the epiphyseal plates (growth plates). These can both be serious problems if not treated early and in the case of the latter can cause permanent damage resulting in inappropriate and diminished growth in the "long bones" of the skeleton (arms and legs). _________________ Tae Kwon Do Blk Belt 1st deg./Fitness Kickboxing Instructor (KarateForums Sensei) [ This Message was edited by: KickChick on 2002-01-01 10:15 ]

There is nothing mystical or magical about TKD,itis only one of many martial arts. Taekwondo is a modern Korean martial art, characterized by fast, high, jumping, spinning kicks. It is an all-around program that offers self-defense training, physical exercise, and artistic expression Any claims made by TKD'ists are probably also made by other martial arts and vice versa. Some martial art styles claim to be the best, but when examined closely, all the empty hand martial arts are basically the same. Some may concentrate on different areas, such as arm locks or grappling, but underlying all martial arts are the same basic principles. Some are practiced for pure sport, while others, such as Taekwondo have an underlying purpose. The underlying purpose of TKD is combat. Taekwondo may be practiced as a pure sport, as a pure fighting art, or as a combination of both. _________________ Tae Kwon Do Blk Belt 1st deg./Fitness Kickboxing Instructor (KarateForums Sensei) [ This Message was edited by: KickChick on 2001-12-31 11:42 ]

I stopped "in class" training Dec. 17 an taught last cardiokickbox class on the 20th. Returning to TKD class Jan 7th. It's a holiday for me in every sense of the word. A break from training and working out (although I do take time to stretch every morning). I have been on a feeding and drinking frenzie this past week and a 1/2 so I'm in for a rude awakening when I return. The party will be over

I saw Lord of the Rings over the holiday weekend (in a small movie theater in Maine where the seats weren't very comfortable to begin with!) Movie was awesome! Read the trilogy in high school (way back when!)... Joecooke007....that wasn't really the ending. The trilogy continues....all filmed back to back so I believe the next is to be released later in 2002. If anyone is interested there is a free screensaver you can download at http://www.tnpsc.com/ssaver/lordsofthering.htm

For advanced belt promotion in TKD it is required for us to break more than one board. Single board breaks are for beginners... at green belt level 2 board breaks are required unless doing a speed break technique. To be promoted to black belt, one must break 3 boards (4 different times...3 w/hand, another 3 w/hand, 3 w/foot and another 3 with foot). Anyone can break one board with brute strength, but strength alone begins to fail as the number of boards increases. Only concentrated power and precise techniques will prevail when breaking more than one board. Advanced breaking techniques are not measured alone by the number of boards broken but instead by the difficulty of the technique itself. To break more than one board requires training and study of the wood itself, such as its composition, hardness, how the grain of the board is positioned, and the curvature of the board. _________________ Tae Kwon Do Blk Belt 1st deg./Fitness Kickboxing Instructor (KarateForums Sensei) [ This Message was edited by: KickChick on 2001-12-24 10:32 ]

How do i tie my taekwondo belt
KickChick replied to MrDash's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
"Traditionally" this is how to tie TKD belt: Hold belt at its center, ends even, with stripes (if you have them) on the left side. Place center of belt on front center of jacket, about one inch below the naval (a location called the tanden). Wrap belt around your waist, crossing the right side over the left side at center of the back. Stripes will now be on your right side. Pull ends of belt forward and adjust so the ends are even. Lay the left side of belt over the tanden. Lay the right side of belt across the tanden. Stripes will now be on your left side. Slide the left side of belt (striped side) under and behind all the belt layers at the tanden. Stripes will still be on your left side. Loop Bring left (striped) end of belt down and over the front of the U Loop striped end under and up through the U shape to form a knot. Pull ends of belt outward to tighten knot. Stripes will be on your right side. Adjust knot so the ends of belt are even and hang neatly. -
Also... I am more than willing to change my "name" here to avoid further confusion. Any suggestions??????

um...Deby here!... Jack... my sympathies go out to you too hon! But as I tell my kids ( which 2 of are around your age...)...you will experience many many heartaches as you get older. Your heart and soul are now just getting accustomed to such things ... wait! Just last night at a party at our instructors home, he recieved word that a black belt from our school died at college suddenly yesterday a day before his 21st birthday! He was studying to be a neuro surgeon, capt. of TKD club at university and an incredibly "nice" young man. why? These questions we still ask even as we get older and our hearts and souls have undergone many years of tragedies. _________________ Tae Kwon Do Blk Belt 1st deg./Fitness Kickboxing Instructor (KarateForums Sensei) [ This Message was edited by: KickChick on 2001-12-24 08:07 ]

Arthritis treatment is determined by the type you have. An analgesic like aspirin or acetaminophen can be taken for inflammation and pain relief. Swimming, golfing, walking, tennis, any range-of-motion exercises (such as stretching)are valuable as medication in keeping joints flexible and mobile. Weight loss to relieve extra stress on joints. Glucosamine and Chondroitin Sulfates also help in decreasing inflammation and improving the body's ability to repair and strengthen tissues. Also a supplement called MSM has gained considerable recognition for its results relieving arthritis. MSM stands for Methylsulfonylmethane, a stable metabolite of DMSO. MSM is found in rain in all plants and animals. Arthritis pain if often caused by an accumulation of toxic buildup in the joints, muscles and fluids. Inflammation of joints is often also caused by toxic buildups in those same areas. MSM supplements keep cells from becoming rigid. MSM supplements do not cure arthritis but does reduce the swelling that causes pain. _________________ Tae Kwon Do Blk Belt 1st deg./Fitness Kickboxing Instructor (KarateForums Sensei) [ This Message was edited by: KickChick on 2001-12-24 07:40 ]

What is your favorite supplementary training activity
KickChick replied to SaiFightsMS's topic in Health and Fitness
Aside from my TKD training and teaching cardio fitness classes each week, I also strength/flexibility train, run on threadmill 3 miles (if I don't cardio train, like this week since classes are cancelled because of holiday). Jumping on trampoline, playing football & basketball with my sons and dancing! I am starting plyometrics (New Years resolution to jump higher) to help with my advanced jump kicks needed to pass for my 2nd degree ... _________________ Tae Kwon Do Blk Belt 1st deg./Fitness Kickboxing Instructor (KarateForums Sensei) [ This Message was edited by: KickChick on 2001-12-24 06:30 ] -
So true... it took a mean side kick to my ribs that taught me to guard my middle more. Now I find that when I spar I am more or less walking in with more of a staggered stance (my butt facing my opponent more than my chest/middle .. ok now no comments ok? ) My hands and forearms covering my middle before and after executing a hand technique. But it sure showed me that although that blow to my ribs hurt like a &^%# ... it could be worse if there was a next time. Since then my middle is always protected (maybe doubly so ).

Combos
KickChick replied to ad's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
When I said keep'em coming (I mean't the posts on combos) Jab/cross is very basic and simple and yes effective ... but most effective when combined with combo kick technique... the momentum of the cross following the jab puts your body in the right position to throw a mean roundhouse. No offense taken ad ... really -
In reading these threads on board breaking... everyone is referring their breaks as to the board they broke. What is the maximum number of boards (inches of each) that you all have broken? I know after a certain number spacers are used....we've had a 10 board break and a 12 board patio block/cement break and a very impressive ice break done 8 sheets about 2 inches thick. (I have the cement break posted on my web page). Personally I am up to 5 boards but now trying to work on speed breaks for my next degree.

Do you have a meditation technique you are willing to share?
KickChick replied to SaiFightsMS's topic in Health and Fitness
I have just recently used meditation as a way of getting in touch with "myself". Allday long I expend all my energies to everyone else in my life and most of the time lose sight of myself (if you can kinda understand this... those of you without kids, fellow workers, students etc.) Also now during the holiday season I am so stressed out to the point where I am hurried about and not giving myself the chance to enjoy the sights, smells and sounds around me. This is when I try to use meditation to slow myself down and get in touch with the true importance of what is going on around me and within me most importantly. What I do is simple and even do this at the end of my classes. Lie flat and think about your toes relaxing, one at a time, then your feet, ankles, calves, thighs, torso, fingers, wrists, lower arms, upper arms, shoulders, spine, neck, jaw, and facial muscles. Go very slowly, paying attention to the tense muscles in your body, allowing them to release the tension. Breathe deeply. Next add some imagery. I like JoeCookes idea.... I am a sun worshipper and find I derive lots of energy from its warmth and light. And if you find you've had a stressful day and are unable to sleep ...this imagery sounds strange but it does work (beats counting sheep too!) Think about descending a stairway slowly and count backwards from ten to one. Then see a garden gate and go to it, leaving all your burdens in a bundle outside the gate. Then go through the imagined garden gate. Feel the sun or rain on your skin, touch flowers and leaves smell the scents around you. When it is time, go back through the gate (leaving your burdens behind), back up the stairs, and back into your bedridden world, peaceful and relaxed. -

hmmm a fairy? I'll hafta cut and paste that to show my male students... (they may want your email address! ) ... j/k I take the extra time before and after class time to go over specifics with each student and then follow along side them during class manuevering their hips and legs to make sure they aren't torqueing their knees because that seems to be their biggest problem: opening the hips up too much on the side kicks to the bag and therefore torqueing the knee. Also bending of the wrists on their punches/hooks/uppercuts is another biggie ! ....did I mention I use alot of "Prodigy" songs in my cardio music? _________________ Tae Kwon Do Blk Belt 1st deg./Fitness Kickboxing Instructor (KarateForums Sensei) [ This Message was edited by: KickChick on 2001-12-19 16:57 ]
