  1. I believe more and more martial artists are taking up grappling to round out their repertoire but should do so without foresaking their standing fighting skills in favor of groundfighting. But graplling has its limitations too just as standing fighting does. You don't want to go to the ground against more than one attacker. If you go against an opponent who is a groundfighter, you should be able to know enough about groundfighting so that you can at least stand back up! ... especially against more than one opponent as in a street situation. You have to be able to get on your feet in the most efficient manner to ensure a desireable outcome!!
  2. Well, SaiFights won't be having a hand sandwich from me ... I know she is a :pony: too so KickChick will answer her question. Answer? Easy ... I don't wear white it is what we call the "black gi days".... and honestly if you've been training in the martial arts for a while and you should know how to handle that situation ...nothing should have to interfere with your MA training. Suggest the use of black gi pants to your instrnctor (actually it helps if you have a few female instructors in the school they tend to be more sympathetic to this issue) well, this isn't a "women's forum" Sai and maybe this is a little too much for the majority here but I do know that inside the dojo (as well as outside) we are faced with a different set of circumstances and challenges to face and overcome. First there is this "time of month" which causes us physical problems (fatigue and muscle aches) and emotional upheaval. That is why God created chocolate I'm sure! _________________ ITF/TKD Black Belt (1st dan)/Fitness Kickboxing Instructor (KarateForums Sensei) [ This Message was edited by: KickChick on 2002-01-17 10:38 ]
  3. .... not to mention long toenails .... YEOUCH
  4. Have you ever noticed or even paid attention as to what your body craves? Sounds silly but your body knows what it wants ... sometimes its good and sometimes bad. There are times (very few mind you ) when I crave a salad or fruit or a tall glass of milk ... I would take this to mean that my body is lacking in these vitamins and I need to replenish them ASAP. Pay attention to your cravings, they obviously mean something. When you overload your system with too much junk ... it crashes (kinda like my computer does!! )
  5. Warming up is crucial but as Jack posted the cool down is even more so. You gain more flexibility when the muscles are warm. (Think of the spaghetti noodle theory. When cold, the noodle (muscle) breaks, when placed in boiling water, the noodle (muscle) becomes pliable and stretches.) Same at my school Jack ...hardly ever do a cool down. We finish our classes with several 5 minute sparring matches....then go and remove gear to go home. Not good... you must get the heart rate down gradually but keep moving so as blood clots don't form. Water as we all know is important before and after your training! Stretch everyday!!! Lots of good tips in the Health & Fitness Forum Iwant2BaDragon. _________________ ITF/TKD Black Belt (1st dan)/Fitness Kickboxing Instructor (KarateForums Sensei) [ This Message was edited by: KickChick on 2002-01-16 19:59 ]
  6. Actually I am in favor of a Martial Arts Humor/Joke Forum. I have so many! Here's one! You know you have been training in Taekwondo too long when you... Say to the salesman in a clothing store, "Nice pants, but I don't think I can kick in them." Say "I'm sorry" and involuntarily bow. Go to the shoe store to try on shoes and: Instead of walking around the store, you practice pivots, sweeps, stances, and kicks. Choose shoes based on whether they are flexible or have steel toes. Side kick a malfunctioning cold drink machine. Ensure the left side of your bathrobe folds over the right side and the belt is in a square knot. Use kicks to turn lights on and off. Cannot walk by anyone from your school without casually exchanging a flurry of mock strikes and kicks. Leap to your feet and kick while watching "Kung Fu," "Walker, Texas Ranger," and "Highlander" at home. Find yourself practicing staff techniques in miniature with your pencil during dull meetings. Try to back fist the correct floor button on the inside of the elevator, based on your memory of the button's location, before you get in far enough to see it. Never stand with your arms crossed or with your hands in your pockets. Keep at least one martial arts weapon by your bed when you sleep. Have the urge to bow every time you enter or leave a room. Accidentally call teachers "sabum." Find yourself practicing stances while standing in line. Have occasional delusions of sparring adequacy.
  7. The jump adds height to the kick but caution and perfect timing are required so as not to get caught off balance. Jumping and spinning kicks are usually defensive kicks. They are usually used in offensive situations when the opponent is weaken. The beauty of Tae Kwon Do I feel is in the jump/spinning kicks integrated within the TKD hyungs. Tae kwon do fighters are known for their kicking expertise. To encourage more kicking in TKD sparring competitions, more points are awarded for jump kicks because of their difficulty.
  8. Yeah....well, I made a guy cry once too ... oops sorry got to block those lowkicks honey! Hey you want to play with the big boys you gotta grab a mitt and get in the game so to speak. You play --You pay .... suck it up girls. Just the other night I was on my 2nd/ 5 minute spar going onto my third when the guy (blue belt) approaches me... this is his first spar of the night and seeing that I am all dripping with sweat and huffing and puffing, he says "Oh you can just use me as a punching bag, I'll be easy on you, just come after me and I'll just block, ok?" I say "yeah right! " That adds fuel to an engine running on almost empty ... don't ever say that to me again buddy!
  9. Hey SaiFights ... I think any post that has "girls" in the subject line is going to get alot of "hits" here .... sure, relay our responses....maybe we can get another
  10. Anyone, in fact, can acquire a business license, purchase a black belt, rent studio space and, to the unwitting public. Generally, 4th dan I believe is when you are considered an "expert" in TKD and 7th through 9th is composed of TKD masters... the elite who fully understand all the particulars of Tae kwon do, mental and physical, although 1st degree -3rd are quite capable and knowledgeable to offer instruction within a school or club. _________________ ITF/TKD Black Belt (1st dan)/Fitness Kickboxing Instructor (KarateForums Sensei) [ This Message was edited by: KickChick on 2002-01-16 07:04 ]
  11. If you'd like to post your location ... I would say, where you currently are accessing KarateForums (state/country) you may do so within your profile (where it says "From:" directly under Web Address. Update those profiles .... let's see how global we are!!!
  12. Hey check it out ... http://www.kungpowmovie.com/ I saw the coming attractions on tv last night ... not quite sure what to expect here
  13. You know, it's funny .... I just came across this thread and it's reminding me to get out soon and get myself a mouth guard!! I lost mine months ago and have been sparring without it. Thing is my instructor told me that I have improved blocking kicks and punches to the head. Maybe cos' I want to keep the pearly whites that I was born with .... he hasn't noticed that I have been sparring without one, but I guess the lack of having my mouth guard has improved my blocking defenses (....like I said I am getting one SOON I don't advise it!) _________________ ITF/TKD Black Belt (1st dan)/Fitness Kickboxing Instructor (KarateForums Sensei) [ This Message was edited by: KickChick on 2002-01-15 13:38 ]
  14. I hear ya Kickbutt ... and totally agree but I believe most of the women involved in the MA would let instances such as those roll off their back so-to-speak. Thats pretty minor considering that every day women are facing and meeting challenges in and out of the dojo. Let's not get into dealing with come-ons, sexual inuendo, and other forms of sexual harassment or gender differences within the martial arts ... that may be too heated a subject
  15. Welcome to KarateForums The JKD Kid
  16. Take a look at member's profiles ... if they post their location it will usually appear by their member name along side their posted thread. As you become acquainted with our forum Slider you will notice we have members from many many areas ...i.e. U.S., Canada, Enland, Australia, Panama ... (in no specific order and I know I missed a few!)
  17. There are various sites on the web where you can obtain the history of TKD. (I don't want to post it all here since it is way too lengthy .... but I like this particular account) http://ryanshroyer.tripod.com/david_jewell.html The high kicks and of course the "horse stance" originated from ancient horseback fighting and evolved in to many of the practiced hyungs (katas) of TKD. I know there was a thread somewhere here in the TKD forum on history of TKD but I couldn't find it _________________ ITF/TKD Black Belt (1st dan)/Fitness Kickboxing Instructor (KarateForums Sensei) [ This Message was edited by: KickChick on 2002-01-14 12:25 ]
  18. In all my years I haven't had anything like "that" happen to me. I have had alot of other I've been kicked there... punched there... but never grabbed there...at least not during instruction
  19. Tempers flare at every sporting event ... but at a child's own event it is usually the parents themselves that are the ones acting up. It is downright embarrassing to see some of these parents (my husband coaches basketball and baseball so I've seen it first hand). Each individual has to have to common sense to walk away in such situations. Sure it could happen in martial arts. Our school instructor has had to defend himself many a time when a disgruntled parent asks why his child is not on the test list or given a reprimand. Thing is with that "hockey dad incident", the public (or jury) wasn't informed of the victim's criminal record, that he was a arrested on several accounts of battery and fighting "incidents" and other "violent offenses". Maybe it was self defense? This would have possibly swayed the jury's decision. Prior history of arrests or "incidents" should not have any bearing on this case... or should it? _________________ ITF/TKD Black Belt (1st dan)/Fitness Kickboxing Instructor (KarateForums Sensei) [ This Message was edited by: KickChick on 2002-01-14 11:15 ]
  20. Hi Slider and Welcome ... Yes, we are an "active" forum
  21. Hey Slider ... let me first take this time to welcome you to KarateForums ... I think where we were going with this particular thread was repetitive kicks as used in class. As a student of TKD ... we often hold our leg up and throw as many different kicks (including tension kicking)as we possibly could working on balance, height and power with each kick executed. As Tobias_Reece stated in his post earlier "Not all of us martial artists do MA for stree combat situations. Some techniques or exercises are done just to improve ourselves" ... i.e. our kicking abilities. Kicking height is important for certain hyungs/katas...kickboxing and other styles of MA, and is effective during spar to the head...(again dependent on the style).
  22. In general Tae kwon does not teach the use of weapons but weapons are still an integral part of any martial art and our school at times offers instructional "workshops" on the use of various traditional offensive weapons.
  23. Welcome to KarateForums burbs! The only MT KB school that I know of personally is this one. Maybe you can get in touch with and they can possible refer you to an area of instruction closer to you. Taking a look at certain MA locators on web brought up absolutely nothing. Good Luck to you! 24. We don't do it out of instinct. There are good reasons for girls to travel in packs. Why? The advantage to this strategy is a reduction in the number of bathroom trips. Someone who doesn't have to use the "potty" at the time will go anyway, saving another trip later. An entire group of girls can go to the bathroom at the same time and never spend a moment apart! Also, thinking back on my clubbing days, the bathroom is all the way across the dance floor. Sure, you're perfectly capable of going by yourself, but the chances of you getting out and finding your friends again are slim to none. And no one wants to be left to dance all alone. The obvious solution is .... take all of your friends with you! Another advantage to this strategy is a reduction in the number of bathroom trips. Someone who doesn't have to use the lavatory at the time will go anyway, saving another trip later. An entire group of girls can go to the bathroom at the same time and never spend a moment apart. ...who'd of thought this thread would lead to this? _________________ ITF/TKD Black Belt (1st dan)/Fitness Kickboxing Instructor (KarateForums Sensei) [ This Message was edited by: KickChick on 2002-01-11 06:32 ]
