Do a search here on the forum (up in toolbar) using "stretches" and it will bring up a load of threads with tips on stretching. Two of my favorite sites: http://www.stadion.com/question_stretching.html and http://members.tripod.com/~run4ever/sports/stretching_toc.html Since there are many threads on this in the Health & Fitness Forum, I will close this one out with the hopes that you will find what you are looking for!

Strength is conditioning your body to fire more and more muscle fibers on command–and is basically working with a speed variable... work = force x distance; power = (force x distance) / time. A simple example is the difference between squatting fifty pounds ten times and squatting 500 pounds once. Workwise, it's the same. But, lifting that 500 pounds once might take all of 3 seconds for a very powerful person but moving that quarter ton, over ten reps might take thirty seconds for someone else. Mass is the foundation for absolute power. A skinny teen can probably squat 50 pounds ten times, but probably wouldn't get 500 pounds off the rack. Added bodymass allows for more muscle. Bigger muscles contract more forcefully. Overall size provides greater support for any given load. Olympic lifters are usually large people. But, since power is primarily neural in nature, size isn't always necessary. There are small Olympic lifters, too, who pound for pound–weight lifted relative to bodyweight is greater–may be more powerful than the super heavyweights. Take Tiger Woods for an example....a slim guy who easily drives a golf ball over 300 yards is powerful because of technique and speed. Tiger has programmed his neural system to sequentially uncoil his body, quickly, to smack the daylights out of a small white ball. Need we have to mention Bruce Lee here? ....

This week marks the first Independence Day celebration since Sept. 11. Songs about the terrorist attacks that were supposed to be performed on two holiday specials -- PBS' "A Capitol Fourth” and ABC's "In Search of America: A July 4th Musical Celebration” -- have been dropped because the networks say they set the wrong tone. (... and you thought KF was tough on censoring expletives!!) Because this is one of the songs that was banned (... look thru the lyrics to find out why) ... I thought I would post the lyrics here in celebration of what it means to be an American! .... (.....an angry one at that!) Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American) Appropriate Lyrics? Lyrics By Toby Keith American Girls And American Guys We'll always stand up and salute We'll always recognize When we see Old Glory flyin' There's a lot of men dead So we can sleep in peace at night When we lay down our head. My daddy served in the army Where he lost his right eye But he flew a flag out in our yard Till the day that he died He wanted my mother My brother My sister and me To grow up and live happy In the land of the free. Now this nation that I love Has fallen under attack A mighty sucker punch came flyin' in From somewhere in the back Soon as we could see clearly Through our big black eye Man, we lit up your world Like the Fourth of July. Hey Uncle Sam put your name At the top of his list And the Statue of Liberty Started shakin' her fist And the eagle will fly And there's gonna be hell When you hear Mother Freedom Start ringin' her bell And it'll feel like the whole wide world Is rainin' down on you Brought to you courtesy Of the Red, White and Blue. Oh justice will be served And the battle will rage This big dog will fight When you rattle his cage And you'll be sorry that you messed with The U.S. of A. 'Cause we'll put a boot in your ass It's the American way. AMC Special on Bruce Lee

As this is a time-sensitive thread here ... moving it up the list so as all of you who can access this channel can tune in this evening for the show! ... ::making popcorn now:: -
No not really. But my only suggestion is that a thorough warm-up is essential prior to plyometric training. Attention should be given to jogging/jump rope to warm up muscles, stretching , striding and general mobility especially about the joints involved in the planned plyometric training. A warm-down should follow too! It is wise not to perform too many repetitions in any one session and since it's the quality not the quanity, with the emphasis on speed and power rather than endurance, split the work into sets with ample recovery in between.

I thought I would start up this thread to shed some light on some "lesser known" martial arts that come from various countries from around the world. It is amazing just how many "martial arts" there are out there. If you have some info on an "uncommon" or "lost" martial art... post it here! Here is one: (I came across this surfing just the other day) Stav (a Nordic Martial Art) http://www.einherjarve.org.uk/s_overview.htm

Yes, well, unrealistic is not what sells as far as video games rated "T" or "M" .... the better the graphics (which is the intent) the more realistic. What a good brother you are .... yep my son (& daughter... who's into that suggestive rap crap ... sorry!) gets edited CD's as well... (thank goodness for WalMart!), and if not ---->headphones!

I think I may have mentioned that once or twice in my post Bon ... but thats OK .... it's worth repeating! .... and not enough can be said for Plyometrics training for power and muscle explosiveness This method of training enhances the explosive reaction of your kicks and jumps through powerful muscular contractions as a result of rapid eccentric contractions. Good tips WhiteShark .... It has been suggested that you be able to squat twice your body weight before attempting depth jumps as in plyometrics. However, less intensive plyometric exercises can be incorporated into general circuit and weight training so as to progressively condition your muscles. The exercises WhiteShark suggested and simple plyometric drills such as skipping hopping and bounding should be done first. More demanding exercises such as flying start single-leg hops and depth jumps should be limited to when you are thoroughly conditioned to do them.

ah yes, I grew up in the same era .... I am so surprised that Looney Tunes hasn't been banned!! G95champ Just Love Your Comment!!!!!!!!!!!! The reason I brought up Gerard Jones' book is that he does take what spinninggumby brought up (may make young individuals act out their aggressions) and somewhat debunks that idea. As a parent of a 17 year old boy who plays PS2 incessantly and an 8 yr old boy who looks up to his older brother and "trys" to emulate him in every way .... I have to be aware of what that younger boy is open to. It is my responsibility as a parent. BTW .... my 8 yr old's fav band is P.O.D.

http://abcnews.go.com/sections/wnt/DailyNews/videogames020701.html "In the video game called Grand Theft Auto III, players enter a virtual world called Liberty City and assume the role of an escaped criminal who hijacks cars, guns down pedestrians, has sex with a prostitute and then earns extra points by killing her so he can take back his money." ... "GTA-3 was banned in Australia and denounced by Congress here in the United States in the annual report card on video game violence. Despite, or perhaps because of such complaints, it is the nation's top-selling video game this year. It's a particularly big hit with adolescent boys. " According to Gerard Jones author of "Killing Monsters: Why Children Need Fantasy, Super Heroes, and Make-Believe Violence".... "Jones forcefully argues that violent video games, movies, music and comics provide a safe fantasy world within which children learn to become familiar with and control the frightening emotions of anger, violence and sexuality. He debunks studies linking violent media with violence in society and argues that children clearly understand the difference between pretend and reality. " Your thoughts?

How long does it take to become a blackbelt?
KickChick replied to coltmakai's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
The black belt is only as good as the training that went into it, the standards that were met to earn it, and the instructor who awarded it. Getting your Black belt means everything and nothing. Everything for the avid devoted martial artist. Everything for the martial artist whose life depends on "expert" skill. (Webster's New World Dictionary a black belt is "awarded to an expert of the highest skill in judo or karate" ..... and nothing to those who were given their belt because they are passed out because you "have all your necessary lessons" or because "you're special". threesixty -- no problem as far as taking a "joke" .... but I didn't find that funny (sorry) And note: I didn't say "better" I said "avid" ... Well said SaiFights _________________ KarateForums Sensei 1st dan Tae Kwon Do (ITF) Cardio/Fitness Kickboxing Instr. How long does it take to become a blackbelt?
KickChick replied to coltmakai's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
...was that supposed to be funny .... 'cos I'm not getting it As a younger person ... did it ever cross your mind that maybe the "old people" have more responsibilities outside of training than you do. As a mother, wife, career person and an avid MA trainer, yes I do have injuries but I gotta tell you .... the younger kids seem to fall prone to more injuries in the dojo (as well as outside the dojo) than many of the "older" students. I find my childrens extracurricular activities, my household duties, overtime at work etc. etc. .... take precedent at times over my training schedule .... and more times than not, I manage to juggle ALL of them. Now may I ask a question? Who is the bmore "avid" black belt ... the adult that has trained for 10 years, or the teen who trained for 2-3 years to get their black belt?  _________________ KarateForums Sensei 1st dan Tae Kwon Do (ITF) Cardio/Fitness Kickboxing Instr. TAE KWON DO ASSOCIATIONS
KickChick replied to blood talon's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
I see that you are located in Canada. Yes karatekid1975 is right on those two associations but there are so many offshoots ... it is almost confusing at times. Check out the GTF in Canada http://rescomp.wustl.edu/~tkwondo/gtfCD.html http://www.winghonfu.cyberus.ca/index.shtml in your area besides ITF for a more traditionalized TKD. ITU is a union and I don't believe you'll find too many Canadian schools as members as of yet (I may be wrong). -

Yes, good advice Martial_Artist. Unfortunately, many people train for years and still fail to achieve full power because they have learned the basic kicks incorrectly. Without good basics, you will never achieve those explosive kicks. In executing your side kick, you should stand perpendicular to the target. Lift the knee of your kicking leg as high as possible to the front or side, then extend your leg to the side while pivoting your supporting foot more than 90 degrees away from your opponent. Drive your hip forward as you strike the target with the bottom of your foot. You may slide your supporting foot forward, and your body should remain perpendicular to your target. It is OK to lean backward as you kick, but dont turn your torso away from the target. Many people limit their explosive power in the side kick by turning their upper body away from the target and rotating the hip of their kicking leg inward, with their knee and toes turned downward. Instead, you should keep your body sideways, your hips open, and the knee and toes of your kicking leg turned upward. You need to use your entire body when kicking. You must fully extend it and drive your full force in the direction of your kick. Your whole body should form one solid line of power. Never try to generate force with only your legs. You must use your waist in every kick. It functions like an axle attached to a wheel. Power comes not just from your legs, but from the twisting motion of your waist and the pivoting of your foot. Your body should move like a whip. The power generated by the twisting and pivoting travels through your leg and explodes into uour target. Yes as Martial _Artist advises make use of the heavy bag for developing power in your kicks. Once you have mastered the form of the basic kicks, you can attach light weights or resistance bands to your ankles to develop your strength. Remember though that when using weights, you should train for speed. Slow movements will build bulky, short, slow-twitch muscles rather than the long, supple, fast-twitch muscles required for the martial arts.To kick with speed, power and accuracy, you need to be able to move your body through a full range of motion, this is where you can benefit from some dynamic stretching exercises. Perform straight-leg rising kicks to the front, side and back, as well as inward and outward crescent kicks .... will increase your range of motion
