  1. Soldiers are as strong as the general who leads them, and, in a like manner, students can only excel under an excellent instructor. 1. Strong moral and ethical standard. 2. Clear outlook and philosophy in life. 3. Responsible attitude as an instructor. 4. Scientific mind in matters of technique. 5. Knowledge of the vital spots of human anatomy. 6. Unshakable integrity in political and financial dealings. (The development of students should take precedence over commercialism. Once an instructor becomes concerned with materialism, he will lose the respect of his students. 7. Dedication to their Martial Art. 8. One who gains confidence from his seniors is trusted by his fellow instructors, and is respected by his juniors.
  2. I will send you a pm on this since the thread that refers to this suggestion of a MA Training/Strategies Forum is in the "Staff only" Forum .... Training means to "make fit" but in MA terms it also means "to instruct as to make proficient" .... like technique, strategies and sparring modifications. Because I "train" in the martial arts that doesn't mean I belong in a health and fitness class ... see? The Member Feature refers to an idea kicker came up with earlier this year ("star of the month") featuring a member who gets rated overall by having the best informative posts, the most posts, etc.... get a special recognition of sorts. _________________ KarateForums Sensei 1st dan Tae Kwon Do (ITF) Cardio/Fitness Kickboxing Instr. 3. Patrick you may remember when we were doing the Forum enhancements a couple of months ago (structuring the forums and their descrips) ... I suggested a separate Forum for Martial Arts Strategies/Training (tactics, techniques, etc.) and you had suggested we combine with Health & Fitness. (which I disagreed on but ....) I am all for a Martial Arts "Training" /Strategy Forum .... and lets keep Health & Fitness solely for exercise, injury prevention with no threads on "how to perform high kicks, side kicks, sparring endurance ...etc" I never did believe that this was the best forum to discuss MA technique. Also ... we also did discuss a Member Feature last time we underwent enhancements. Do we want to reconsider this also? _________________ KarateForums Sensei 1st dan Tae Kwon Do (ITF) Cardio/Fitness Kickboxing Instr. [ This Message was edited by: KickChick on 2002-07-07 10:36 ]
  4. Yes, thank you for clarifying that one for me Don Gwinn! Might I also add another tip for developing those explosive muscles (which all martial artists require for kicks and also punches to hit their targets with max speed). Now this is according to T. Kurz .. Some targets require the fully stretched muscles of the leg. Your nervous system has a way of making sure that a stretch, particularly a sudden one, does not end abruptly causing muscle tears (like the dreaded hamstring!) But gradual slowing down before making contact will of course spoil te impact of the kick. So what you need to work on is training your nervous system (or neural reflexes) so that you can obtain max speed at the moment of contact even though it may be close to the maximum reach of motion for this specific kick. So how can you start training for this? Use your hand as a target when doing your dynamic stretches. I do this all the time and it does work! Centers in the brain that regulate coordination and fast movements "know" about the hand. They know it is there and that it can stop the kick so the leg does not have to be slowed down gradually to prevent overstretching. To begin your dynamic stretching start slowly, gradually raise legs higher. Start increasing speed of kicks by using this hand-kicking drill. This will develop your ability to move your limbs with max speed with a full range of motion in your joints (height in those kicks!). Use this drill as a warm-up only because there is a limited amount of kicks that you can practice this way ....front, back, side. What could be better than developing more speed and height in your kicks. Yes, I know it is not necessary to kick high .... but to have more range of motion is an added benefit to height in those kicks. _________________ KarateForums Sensei 1st dan Tae Kwon Do (ITF) Cardio/Fitness Kickboxing Instr. 10. ... more importantly "don't drink and do fireworks" .... or you'll end up with only one----> ...
  11. http://sportsmed.starwave.com/media/other/2002/0704/photo/hotdog1_i.jpg Takeru Kobayashi ate 50½ hot dogs in 12 minutes Takeru Kobayashi a professional competitive eater from Japan, won his second consecutive Nathan's Famous international hot dog eating contest and the coveted Mustard Yellow Championship belt on yesterday (7/4) afternoon ....he surpassed his incredible record of 50 hot dogs and buns -- set last year -- by a half a wiener! His stategy?? The "Solomon" method -- where he breaks the hot dog in half. Despite gaining almost seven pounds in 12 minutes from the contest, he said he's never weighed more than 148 pounds. "I eat a lot only for the competitions, not in daily life," Kobayashi said. "That's how I manage my weight. A month before the contest, I begin to expand my stomach by eating and drinking more than usual. Right before the contest, I don't eat anything." Mentally, Kobayashi is No. 1. Alone in his hotel room prior to competing, he says, he practices image training -- focusing on images of himself succeeding. .... see some simalarities to martial arts competitions?
  12. Well, our school has been on "vacation" this week .... although I have stretched every morning (need to maintain!) It actually is now starting to bother me. I am getting itchy to get back to training once again although I know having this week off is actually good for my body since I have been going fuul speed in the last weeks training for my upcoming 2nd dan. When school reopens on Monday we have a schedule change. I can now take 4 classes a week (instead of 2) besides still teaching my cardio class (my class size will now increase to 20-25) because class days have been cut down to only 2 nights for cardio instead of 4). What I am really psyched about is that we will now have Black Belt Only classes which we never had..... and the Adult All class follows so we can take a back to back class. Come Monday I will surely be sore!!! I'll get back to you all on that I'm sure!
  13. ....since KarateForums is becoming so "worldwide" I was wondering if any of our members are interested or have done ancestry tracking of their roots. My dad passed away when I was 3 and his ancestors came from England ... so I have been working on accumulating info on that side (paternal)....(to no avail as most of his side is deceased). My mom's (maternal)side is from Italy ... (all small villages).... Since I've been on KarateForums I have been unable to devote any time to continuing my searches for info. Anyone else doing the same ... maybe we can help each other out here with names and locations!
  14. ...watched Kickboxer last night on TNN. Wow, was that movie dated ... I thought it looked older than 1989. Van Damme disco dancing ... shake that booty Jean Claude Love that double kick to the Thai boxer's face in the end when Jean holds that leg up ... wow he does have some powerful glutes! okokok.... enough about his physique! LOL
  15. A tremendous bond grew between the people of England and the people of the United States (not just the Governments) during, and immediately following, the second World War. And of course, the men and women that formed those close bonds are passing on and few have shared what really happened to them in World War II. It was too painful. So unfortunately the bonds have severed a bit between our two countries. The English dislike "Americanisms" .... the ways we supposedly have over here in America. When we Americans travel (I work in a travel agency), they love to go to England ...it’s charming, friendly and you don’t have to speak a foreign language! In order to live in Europe you have to be able to speak at least one language and most people speak several. Hollywood depicts Americans as wealthy, colorful, fast-living jet setters ... but it’s not reality. Think of the movies we Americans loveto watch... Room at the Top, Bridget Jones Diary, Notting Hill , all simple, romantic, charming! That’s how we think of England. The place where they don't play football ... (hmmm, might have to relocate there during football season!) America is very much like England, just bigger. We have the same values and there is probably even less crime in New York than in London. Sept. 11th brought many people together especially America and England. (Remember, America came in and helped England in their hour of need and now the tables were turned!)They loved our patriotism ...they loved Tony Blair for playing the American National Anthem and flying immediately to America to stand by our side... and they cried as we cried. Remember too America is one big melting pot. I am 1/4 English (on my fathers side... his grandmother came to America from England). Many of us have genealogical ties to England. _________________ KarateForums Sensei 1st dan Tae Kwon Do (ITF) Cardio/Fitness Kickboxing Instr. 16. I mean really ... .... I've never noticed in martial arts that being a woman was a handicap or a plus. I am a woman and there are men and we train together. Sometimes I'm stronger, sometimes they're stronger - we motivate each other. Women are like tea bags; put them in hot water and they get stronger.-- Eleanor Roosevelt
  17. .... again you're generalizing there! I can beat the living crap out of one of the guys at our school but that doesn't mean the whole lot of you blokes can be whipped by me! C'mon.... back to the physicality As far as the physical fatique.... check out what the quiz stated about endurance. OH .... and as far as "spelling" ... you got that write! LOL!!!!! _________________ KarateForums Sensei 1st dan Tae Kwon Do (ITF) Cardio/Fitness Kickboxing Instr. [ This Message was edited by: KickChick on 2002-07-04 14:24 ]
  18. Don't be so "testeroney"! "men on the average tend to have 20-30 times higher testosterone levels than women, they are able to hypertrophy or grow larger muscles. Since strength is proportional to the size of the muscle, men are generally stronger" .... "generally" .... there are some pretty "big, tough" women out there" and some "skinny, frail, outtashape" guys too. Some interesting facts on sweat, endurance and weight loss too! And as far as obesity in America (there is a thread on "Obesity" here in H&F forum) yes, the numbers are based on a poll taken here .... but over the past 20 years, Great Britain and Germany have experienced obesity growth rates similar to those in the United States. But because they started from lower levels, obesity in those countries has not yet become an epidemic-level threat to public health as it is here in America.
  19. ... this wasn't started as a male vs. female thread .... and I would appreciate the ending of the female bashing .... don't get us girls started cos' we can bash too! I was trying to shed some light on some physiological (let's leave psychology out of this!!!) aspects of muscle and strength of the sexes (points worth knowing) .... Pain has nothing to do with this .... if men were to bear children humanity would cease to exist!!! "Stay at home and wash the dishes"?????? come back to us man ... this is the 21st century!!! ... and let's be civil R-E-S-P-E-C-T~~~~ sing it Aretha! _________________ KarateForums Sensei 1st dan Tae Kwon Do (ITF) Cardio/Fitness Kickboxing Instr. 20. .... knew I would get your attention with this thread!!! "There will always be wonderful biologic differences between men and women. But let’s separate facts from, well, prejudice. Take 'this' quiz, then go out and kick some butt! " http://womencentral.msn.com/fitnesshealth/tools/strengthquiz.asp I scored 35 out of 35 .... Let's see how good you guys do .... (and you girls too!) "Since strength is proportional to the size of the muscle, men are generally stronger. But pound for pound of lean body mass, the differences in strength are minimized when females work out with weights. In fact, the average woman gains strength at a slightly faster rate than the average man does. Could it be our superior form?"
  21. Welcome!
  22. ...short?? 5'9" (?), slender and flexible, ain't that you spinninggumby? ..don't be messin' with me LOL j/k!
