  1. Thanks for your help Danielle. Here's what I've been able to find out thus far.... http://www.akfcolorado.com/about_ms.html OR kungfukarate.com (Click on Grandmaster Baird) I'm still unsure if GM Suh was unaffiliated or not!! It's not important, except I'm quite curious...that's all.
  2. Perhaps when you come down, Bob, you can show me this kata. In TKD, we do a form that seems to have a "back to the wall" theme, called Po Eun. We do it at 2nd degree black, though. I do think Choi might have pulled some of Niahanchi for it. Most likely he did. Also Yoo-Sin seems to copy some of it. Imho, Po Eun is much more closer to Naifanchi than Yoo Sin. oh yeah definitely, however, Yoo-sin is one of my current patterns and there are sections of Naihanchi that remind me of it Yeah, I saw the spots were it resembled Naihanchi.
  3. more like a heel kick? Yeah...kinda. The thing to remember is, in Shindokan, we don't kick above the waist...ever. Any above the waist kick I've ever learned was from TKD's GM Young Ik Suh.

  5. Happy Birthday Danielle!!

  10. For anything...In Shindokan we're taught to have our kicking foot cross behind our supporting leg's foot when executing this kick, as well as bringing both feet together prior to same said kick. I've tried it opposite, but, it feels wrong/strange to me. EDITS: I original typed, in this post/thread "IN FRONT" of our supporting leg's foot. THAT WAS A TYPO; My mind thought BEHIND, but my fingers typed IN FRONT. Sorry for this misunderstanding!!
  11. There's nothing martial about it, imho. I will surrender to the fact that it's more of an art, and that alone is something to be proud of. Not everything can be a martial art!!
  12. How many poor kata video clips or pictures of poorly executed stances are there out there? Sometimes the heart can rule the head leading to websites being full of well-intentioned material which does nothing to show what the club is about. It is often the case that the most enthusiastic are the ones with the least to show. To answer the bold above...I've lost count!!
  13. It's a well deserved acknowledgement from Patrick!! Your posts are the glue that KF depends on across the board. You show professionalism to everyone, and you give us a solid reason to pause. In you, I've found a true friend outside of the Shindokan circle that I can trust without any ambiguity...this is a rare thing!! Congrats on 5 years on KF staff!!
  14. Congrats Liver Punch...well deserved!!
  15. True...for that moment. Effectiveness through Interpretation is a fragile vehicle to drive. What's effective today, might not hold the same tomorrow!!
  16. Ditto and A LOT OF SPARRING. I say A LOT OF SPARRING because a lot of time, imho, people are tensed because they feel inferior to their opponent, and that translates into losing the match. We can be our worse enemy.
  17. Again, Kudan and Judan have NO tests whatsover in Shindokan!!
  18. The year is 1974. TKD is the style. Young Ik Suh is the Grand Master. What would the most likely TKD organization(s) be during the aforementioned circa that he'd be a member of?? I know very little about him, and I want to know so much more. Thanks in advance to all!!
  19. Perhaps when you come down, Bob, you can show me this kata. In TKD, we do a form that seems to have a "back to the wall" theme, called Po Eun. We do it at 2nd degree black, though. I do think Choi might have pulled some of Niahanchi for it. You got it...it'll be my honor.
  20. While the betterment of any art is important, therefore, great, rank shouldn't be awarded for that reason alone. So, I asked just that of our Soke shortly thereafter that he had awarded our Kaicho, before he became our Dai-Soke, with his Kudan...a rank that has no tests. Soke stood up...cleared his throat a time or two...with his hankerchief he wiped his brow, lips, and chin...looked to and fro over those assembled for this ceremony a few times...fixed his glance from time to time at no one in particular...adjusted his obi and gi... "Because I said so!! In my heart and in my eyes, he's earned it with great distinction. That's all I have to say about that!" Then he sat down. I felt smaller than an ant.
  21. Imho...NO!! But, that's my opinion, and a student of Parkour might feel differently.
  22. I was only challenged one time, and that was by the student and not the Sensei. He came during an intermediate class and told me that I had no right to be in that area without the written permission from his Sensei, and I need to leave asap. "Really?" I added. "Yes...really!" in a sarcastic tone. As I firmly walked towards him...."Get out...and don't ever come back and more importantly, don't you ever assume a position that you don't possess." I commanded. "If y..." he started to say. "Get Out now...and I mean NOW!!" as I held the front door open for him. With that he left mumbling something, but he left! This is not that time of yesteryear!! I was befuddled at the audacity of his Sensei. For his Sensei to think that I would bow to his demands. Other than that one time, I've not experienced this for myself.
  23. DVD's can be used, but one needs to be very careful across the board, and in that, nothing can replace a qualified instructor, nor should one try to. I think students can benefit from DVD's only as a reference and back-up at home when the instructor isn't present; to free a confused mind and a mind that's forgotten for the moment...to jar the memory free....for that AHA moment.
