As much as I'm devoted to kata, I'd never rely on it by and of itself, that's why we have the three K's; they support one another as a whole, imho.

That was a long gimmick feud, but a great one!!
-
Imho, Kata gets no respect...that makes me sad.

For me from that by gone era, D-Generation X during WWE's Attitude Era: 1997 -2000.

"If you are caught disrespecting another student (senior or junior) or Hanshi or the Hombu you will be asked to leave immediately. Therefore, only Hanshi reserves the right to define the word, DISRESPECTING!!" This is one of my dojo rules. Talking bad can be as simple as spreading a rumor or tell a confidence; gossip about another student (senior or junior) and/or the dojo and/or Hanshi (me) and/or the Hombu. Venting is cool, just as long as no student and/or the dojo or myself or the Hombu are disrespected.

Ken Shamrock joined the WWF/E way after he had already established himself in the MMA world.

Imho, that choke out wasn't real...it too was a working choke out!!

Becoming a Black Belt, what does it mean to you?

A very solid post!! -
There's quite a lot of excellent tips/advice here already. Hopefully I can add something of value to this discussion. I've a little question first...What jump? This particular movement has been improperly labeled by the masses for quite a long time as a jump; it’s, imho, not a jump at all! In performing this exacting act, your hips don’t go up; therefore, the knees go up, albeit the hips go down. It’s for sure that Empi is a hard kata to master in and of itself, and in that, it should be understood that this kata should never be rushed; timing and rhythm are essential if one is to even begin to understand Empi. When you jump, don't go for distance just jump in a small circle...short and sharp; as you spring up, kick your heels up like you are trying to kick your backside; both feet should land onto the floor at the same exact time in as near a perfect back stance as you can do, and your knife-hand should exactly coincide with that landing...everything happens at once. When landing, try to think "sit" so that you drop your center when you land; completely unmoving. Good luck and enjoy it.

Happy Birthday to you and many more!!

To the entire student body of Wado Ryu, and to any martial artist that was touched in some special way by Tatsuo Suzuki Sensei, please accept my sincerest condolences during this most sad time!! To his friends, family and his wife Eleni; my heart is with you, and you will be in my prayers. Words cannot alone express how sorry I am to have heard this news!! Tatsuo Suzuki Sensei was a great karate-ka; he will be greatly missed by the entire martial arts world!!

I concur with everyone that have said that kids shouldn't train with adults. Imho, no one's going to learn anything of any value under these circumstances. Good luck!

Well...I liked the heck out of it. I can't do that, not on my best day. Very nice. How long have you been tricking? What's your core MA style? Thanks for sharing it!
-
I concur 100%!!
-
Are many MAists going to the ground or not going to the ground because of what a report or people say? I'm hoping its neither, because every MAist must do what they feel is the best for them per the situation at hand for themselves. IMHO!!

Imho, Jamming any kick is much easier than trying to catch them. Trying to catch a kick sometimes is like trying to catch a high speed train; not fun!

I might be joining the instructor ranks soon.

Congrats LP...that's great news. -
I can even feel your excitement in your posts...good luck and train hard!!

If I had irrefutable evidence confirming it, then I'd expel him/her from my dojo for life. No if's, buts, or maybes!!

That is a demonstration that spinning techniques are effective. Many will say that one should never do spinning techniques, like the one in this video, because they are blind techniques, and in that, they expose to many targets. Not if done correctly!!

I'm not a fan of strong side forward. I do see its many pros, but I also see its many cons as well. Imho, a martial artist must be ambidextrous across the board if at all possible. Depending on one side over the other has a tendency for the weak side to remain that weak side; this, imho, this can be a mistake for any martial artist who has full usage of all limbs!!

How much do you learn from your Sensei.
sensei8 replied to honoluludesktop's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
or I don't want to start an argument about this, but I believe that there is a tendency to "cherry pick" what we learn, that is to filter out what in not within our frame of mind. IMO we attribute much of what we know to our teachers, as that is part of validating our skill. Why else would Ueishiba say that looking back he could see no one following. Yet every Master Aikiodist that studied under him claims Ueishiba as his standard. I don't mean to say that we don't owe our skill to our Senesi, we do, and that we are not accomplished, only that much of our skill is based on a journey of discovery, uniquely ours, unlike our teacher's. Here is the true value of kata. A consistant form that ties us to our mutual past. Interesting thoughts. Could you please expound further more when you say CHERRY PICK. -
...Continuing a regular workout routine that incorporates a sledgehammer and a tractor tire?? Certainly, I'll ask my doctor for his advise/opinion before I continue. Until then, I'm asking the members of KF for their opinions, and I thank you!!
