Really? So you think you might have been more comfortable if Patrick did not have video feed of himself? No! The entire venue was impersonal for me, and that's only because I've never done that before. I guess that I'm more use to being face to face, in the same room. The fault is not Patrick, no, it's my fault for being the way that I am.

JusticeZero, I hear what you're saying and I greatly appreciate it. It was disjointed for me mainly because the interview was conducted through the phone, and I could see Patrick and I could hear Patrick and Brian through the phone. For me I wasn't comfortable, but the venue was what it was and if I did more of those types of interviews, I'd handle them much more smoothly. Had I been sitting across from Patrick and Brian, the interview would've been much more smoother because I can see them both as well as there body language and vice versa. Yes, I saw Patrick, but his body language was more tuned into the tasks that he was performing in that given venue. Sorry I'm not on topic.

Lineage, why is it so important?
sensei8 replied to Dobbersky's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I think lineage is as important, or the lack thereof, to each individual practitioner of the martial arts as they feel. Some live by them and some don't. Some say if you have lineage, you're on solid ground. However, if you don't have any lineage, you're standing on quicksand. Everyone who values lineage seems to always add the word "Verifiable" to it. Imho, that's fine, but it's an illusion. Why? JUST BECAUSE SOMEONE SAID SO!! When I look at the Shindokan lineage, I have no idea about the accuracy of anything before I WAS BORN. I have to trust what my Soke has said, and more importantly, I have to trust what our Soke has written in the Shindokan Densho, Hand Scrolls, and By-Laws. I know the Shindokan lineage is absolutely accurate from when I showed up and started taking lessons from my Dai-Soke as well as my Soke going forward. Everything else, I've just got to trust what those two have told me, as well as what I've heard from my other fellow Shindokanists. I can personally verify the Shindokan lineage from Soke down because I've touched them, I've handled them. Before Soke, I've no personal experience to validate the lineage....I must trust!! It's not blind trust, because I believe Soke and Dai-Soke,!! How do you know if your lineage is accurate? How do you know if your lineage is verifiable? How do you know if your lineage has been accurately verified? My lineage is only as important to me depending on the context of the discussion/conversation. Other than that, it is what it is, I take no interest beyond that. -
Thanks Jay, I appreciate it. I'm glad to know that you really enjoyed the proof on the floor segment...it's something I live by. I felt that my guest spot was fine, even though I felt it a bit disjointed at times. That's probably because that was my very first live interview...I was pretty nervous. The LiveStream was pretty interesting and quite fun...I loved the entire experience.

After yesterdays KF LiveStream, and more specifically after my guest spot, which was a very first for me, that interview smacked me right in the face because nothing about Shindokan is publicly found, as it was the direct wishes of our Soke, and in that, any information shared with whomever about Shindokan is because I've shared said information, as it was my right. So, here's Shindokan's lineage as handed down to us, his student body, by our Soke... Shindokan Lineage: Satunuku "Tode" Sakugawa (1733 - 1815) Sokon "Bushi" Matsumura (1797 - 1889) Anko Itosu (1830 - 1915) Shigekazu Ishikawa (1864 - 1959) (Shuri-te) Choshu Saitou (1865 - 1962) (Okinawa-te*) (This is the father of Soke Saitou) (*Choshu Saitou's Okinawa-te Instructor is unknown) Fuyuhiko Saitou (1917 - 2008) (Shindokan** founder; Shindokan was founded in 1950.) (**His instructors were, his father, Choshu Saitou, this is the Okinawa-te side of Shindokan, and Shigekazu Ishikawa, this is the Shuri-te side of Shindokan) Yoshinobu Takahashi (1932 - 2010) (Dai-Soke; and the first student of Soke Saitou) ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ *Some Students of Dai-Soke Takahashi* Robert Mitcham (1957 - ) (Kaicho [President]) [8th Dan] Greg Forsythe (1958 - ) (Kancho [Vice-President] & Chief Instructor of the Shindokan Hombu) [8th Dan] Iwao Takahashi (San Dai-Soke) (Eldest son of Yoshinobu Takahashi) [Ultra Vires~Without Authority] [8th Dan] Thomas Stillwater (Directing Manager of Technical Department & Qualifications Department) [8th Dan] Jonathan Plouge (Board Of Regents ~ Secretary) [7th Dan] Ben Stevenson (Board Of Regents ~ Assistant Directing Manager of Technical Department & Qualifications Department) [7th Dan] Giichi Tanaka (Board Of Regents ~ Qualifications Department) [6th Dan] Yoshikazu Inoue (Board Of Regents ~ Qualifications Department) [7th Dan] Roger Fremoire (Board Of Regents ~ Qualifications Department) [6th Dan] James Mitchell (Board Of Regents ~ Director Accounting Department) [5th Dan] Paul Abernwood (Board Of Regents ~ Director Human Resources Department) [7th Dan] Steven Barlow (Board Of Regents ~ Assistant Director Human Resources Department) [6th Dan] Maria Brogdon (Board Of Regents ~ Director General Planning Department) [5th Dan] Kiyoshi Oonishi (Board Of Regents ~ Assistant Director Planning Department) [5th Dan] ***Facts, Lineage, and History can be found within the Shindokan Densho, Hand Scrolls, and By-Laws***

Very, very interesting art. I did notice that there was no clinching as we see in Boxing, just two fighters trying to find that one opening. Thanks for sharing Dembe with us.

What to do if a teen starts losing interest?
sensei8 replied to mal103's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
You have to intervene early at the first sign of disinterest. Don't be forceful, be patience because it needs kid gloves so that the student runs away. You'll have to do a lot of listening and little talking at first. Sometimes our conversation can be received as a bit preachy, and this is the wrong venue for that. Attack the problem, and not the student. The problem isn't the student, and if you approach that student with this mindset, it'll become personal attack of that student. But listen and listen hard and listen long. Gauge what is being said so that the root of the problem will start to emerge for the betterment of that student. This might shock the student, but as that students instructor, tell that student that the martial arts isn't above all things. Sometimes young students need to know that the world revolves irregardless if the martial arts exists or not. Students, especially young impressive students, needs a regular break from all of the stress that's involved in learning and training the martial arts. When I was a child that was learning the martial arts, I took breaks, and one of my biggest stress reliever's for me was...baseball. I love the martial arts, more specifically Shindokan, and I trained harder than any kid imho, but when baseball season came around. Do you know where I was found? No, not at the dojo! I was playing organized baseball! Baseball took the front seat in my life, and Shindokan took the backseat. After baseball was over, I could be found literally living at the Hombu. That was good for me because the martial arts can be quite tasking; too much for a young student to grasp. Had there been no baseball as a release, I doubt that I would've been interested in anything martial arts related. As a suggestion, just let the kid be a kid, and in that, when all is said and done, this young student will return to the dojo fully refreshed and all gung-ho across the board. -
Did you use a template to select each forums NAME and/or did you receive any assistance in this process from a martial arts source or? Did you use Banner ads in the beginning? How are Banner ads selected for KF? How many times have you, if at all, had to upgrade to a larger server? Where would you like to see KF in the next 5 years? What new changes are you and your staff working on to improve KF for it's members in the very near future? How do you let the public know about KF outside of the internet, if that's even possible nowadays? How long did it take you to create KF's "User Guidelines"? Did you at first not even think of having a "User Guidelines"? Concerning your Network, which is intense in size, was KF first? How many times has the KF Main Page changed over the years? What was your proudest moment in KF? What was your worst moment in KF? What was you biggest AHA MOMENT at/with KF?

AWESOME Heidi...5K posts...one of 4...now that's what I call....SOLID!! I always enjoy reading your posts Heidi, and as Danielle said....it's quality, not quantity...that's what you are...QUANTITY!! Congrats Heidi!!

Absolutely! The more basic, the more effective, imho!!

Jay, Yeah...I see what you're saying. What I see in MMA, as far as trapping is concerned, their initial trapping, when effective, allows the ground and pound, and once the first 1-3 hits, the trap isn't a factor anymore because the bells are starting to ring.

I see this question as a Bunkai question, and in that, yes/no because Bunkai isn't an exact science, and there's no right/wrong answer for your question(s).

MMA Fundraiser?
sensei8 replied to Wolfman08's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
For me, the word "fundraiser" is for non-profit. In that, any MMA event used as a "fundraiser" is for charity, and not for profit, aka, "revenue"! For me, the word "revenue" is for profit. In that, any MMA event used for "revenue" purpose's is for personal financial gain. Nothing is wrong, imho, with either uses, just as long as the clarity of both is understood and respected. One would have to get a license either for non-profit or profit, in that, those laws, rules, and regulations would have to be followed to the letter. Otherwise, imho, if one hosts a MMA event for "fundraiser" purposes, yet afterwards one uses the money raised for personal gain..."revenue", I'm no lawyer, but I'm sure the police would be called by someone. I would just caution you, or others, to first contact a lawyer with your questions and concerns to see if your plans are legal or not. There's a saying...Ignorance of the law is no defense; no excuse. -

An extremely solid post Alex!! If someone is going to try to hit me, throw me, and/or unbalance me, I'd want to move in such a way that my opponents original intent isn't even possible.

I've never seen the Herman until now, however, it seems that it could be used as a very positive training tool at home or at the dojo/dojang. I've seen devices like this in times now having past, but, the technologies yesteryear were very archaic and limited compared to the Herman. Also, the price is quite affordable, imho. Thanks for the info/link Jiffy!!

Jay, I'm pretty sure that you could easily remember Kanku Dai once you get back onto that horse in no time whatsoever. I can also see why you use to choose Kanku Dai for your gradings; it's a dynamic kata, to say the least.
