  1. I see this question as a Bunkai question, and in that, yes/no because Bunkai isn't an exact science, and there's no right/wrong answer for your question(s).
  2. For me, the word "fundraiser" is for non-profit. In that, any MMA event used as a "fundraiser" is for charity, and not for profit, aka, "revenue"! For me, the word "revenue" is for profit. In that, any MMA event used for "revenue" purpose's is for personal financial gain. Nothing is wrong, imho, with either uses, just as long as the clarity of both is understood and respected. One would have to get a license either for non-profit or profit, in that, those laws, rules, and regulations would have to be followed to the letter. Otherwise, imho, if one hosts a MMA event for "fundraiser" purposes, yet afterwards one uses the money raised for personal gain..."revenue", I'm no lawyer, but I'm sure the police would be called by someone. I would just caution you, or others, to first contact a lawyer with your questions and concerns to see if your plans are legal or not. There's a saying...Ignorance of the law is no defense; no excuse.

    Solid!!
  4. Do I need Skype to participate in the KF Livestream this Saturday? If so, where can I get it? Is Skype the only Livestream thingy? I know...I'm showing I'm a computer idiot...again...and again...and...
  5. Thank you Brian, I value your friendship more than you can ever know!!
  6. Welcome to KF Ashley!!!!!!
  7. An extremely solid post Alex!! If someone is going to try to hit me, throw me, and/or unbalance me, I'd want to move in such a way that my opponents original intent isn't even possible.
  8. I've never seen the Herman until now, however, it seems that it could be used as a very positive training tool at home or at the dojo/dojang. I've seen devices like this in times now having past, but, the technologies yesteryear were very archaic and limited compared to the Herman. Also, the price is quite affordable, imho. Thanks for the info/link Jiffy!!

    Kanku-dai

Jay, I'm pretty sure that you could easily remember Kanku Dai once you get back onto that horse in no time whatsoever. I can also see why you use to choose Kanku Dai for your gradings; it's a dynamic kata, to say the least.

    Kanku-dai

While there's no exacting science to Bunkai, imho, the interpretations of any said Kata are unique to both the style, as well as the individual. Some of my favorite Bunkai in Kanku Dai at movements #42 and #43; the drop that ps1 eluded to in his OP... At movement #42 the right knee comes up while the left open palm is at the right inner forearm moving forward. At movement #43 one prostrates with the right leg at ones chest and the left leg straight back while both hands are forward in a supportive position. Favorite #1: At movement #42, I execute a simultaneously left upper sweeping block and upper reverse punch and a right knee strike to either the stomach or the solar-plexus. Then continuing to #43, I execute Judo's Two Hand Reap in which is in preparation for movement #44, while still holding/trapping my opponents right foot against my left side, I use my left knee against my opponents right knee, and then I twist to my left. Favorite #2: At movement #42/#43, I drop to avoid a roundhouse kick. At movement #44, I've allowed the roundhouse kick to pass me, I then stand up, which puts be behind my opponent, I then grab his lapel with both of my hands and throw my opponent backwards and to the ground. Favorite #3: Let's say that my opponent grabs one of my lapels with his left hand. I quickly grab his top-left wrist with my left hand and with my right hand I grab his underside left wrist, I simultaneously push upward and twist to his inside, once his hold on me is released, I then lift his left hand/arm upward while keeping my grip in such a way that my opponent is now on his tiptoes. This entire sequence represents the hands in movement #42. Then I turn 180 degrees while maintaining my grip on his left wrist, and at the same time, I then continue to manipulate my opponent in such a way that I'm forcing my opponent to the ground with the help of my right knee, which is now pressing against my opponents left elbow. I continue to drive my opponent to a prostrate position, my right knee is now on top of my opponents elbow, I then let go of my opponents left wrist, and I'm keeping pressure on my opponents left arm by trapping the same against my body. It is then that I go forward onto both of my hands, thus breaking my opponents elbow and left wrist. This entire sequence represents movement #43. Those are some of my favorite Bunkai in Kanku Dai; for movements #42 and #43, with some of #44.
  11. Although February 23, 2008 seems like a long time ago, it truly only seems like yesterday. I found KarateForums.com through Brian (bushidoman_96) when we were both members of another well known forum, that has since then closed its forum section. The KF world was so much different than that other forum, and by that, KF is strongly structured, closely monitored, and professionally controlled. Don't get me wrong. This is a great thing across the board. The other forum was only managed by its moderators, and this is a bad thing because that managing style was the down fall of that forum section. The other forum's managers and owners wouldn't ever show up to critic, correct, or to help us moderators and members. I wasn't made aware of my unprofessional tone, and I was a moderator, bad habits started to emerge in me; I hated it. I quit that one, and then I came to KarateForums.com...and I'm so glad that I did. Thanks Brian for introducing KF to me, it's made a world of difference to me. Please bear with me for just a moment so that I might be able to paint a picture of where I was when I came to KF. This painting would use a lot of dark colors at first, but then, slowly but slowly and surely, bright and vibrant colors would replace those dark hues. Those bad habits of mine that I brought from that other forum had started to infect KF across the board. It seemed that with almost every post of mine, I'd be called unto the carpet by Patrick or one of his staff for something I posted. So much so that one day, Patrick sent me a pm that had no ambiguity whatsoever...he was to the point and guess what, he was RIGHT and I was WRONG across the board. Patrick warned me that if I continued in the manner of which I was going, I was more than likely going to find myself being banned from KarateForums.com forever!! This got my attention quickly. However, because of Patrick's compassion, and because of the his staff's compassion, I was given a second chance. I was wrong, and I'll admit it to everyone...I WAS WRONG!! I'M SO SORRY FOR THOSE TIMES!! To Patrick, to his staff, and to each and every KF member...I'M SO SORRY AND I CONTINUE TO ASK FOR YOUR FORGIVENESS EVEN TODAY because I was dead wrong, and whenever I think about my early KF days and how close I can to ruining a great thing; it saddens me. Friday might be here, but Sunday's coming!! I would like to think that since those early KF days of mine, I've done a full 180 degree turn around across the board for the better, and that those bad days are far, far behind me/us forever!! KarateForums.com means everything to me and these are not idle words; I mean it with all of my heart and soul. I come to KF because it's number 1 across the board imho. No other forum can touch KF's professionalism and the like!! Other forums can try, but I believe that they'll fall quite short. Outside of the Shindokan world, I'm nothing, but with KF I'm someone of value that can tap into the strength's of each and every KF member ...I'm Robert Mitcham, and I'm accepted as a person first, and then as a martial artist second. We KF members are part of a bigger picture. We're part of Patrick vision. We're part of a family. We're the essence of what embodies the martial arts, and KF is part of that because KF reminds us the importance of values by teaching us KF members that discipline and respect is not a lost art. I'm so thankful that I've a place to unwind, kick my feet up, have some Ice tea/Lemonade, and talk to all of my KF family not only here in the USA, but in every four corner of the world. A place where all can exchange everything from recipes to favorite books to movies and of course, the martial arts. Proof is on the floor, and KF is a proponent of just that!! The martial arts is that shared bond amongst us member of KF. Even if you're not a martial artist, you're still welcomed at KF. There's something here for all walks of life to experience for both the young and the old. For me, being at KF is like sitting around a warm campfire and toasting marshmallows while sharing stories with loved ones!! It's home!!
  12. KarateForums.com means everything to me. KF burns bright within my soul, both as a martial artist, but as an individual as well. Without KF, I've nothing, and with KF, I've everything. Great discussions across the board, great fun, great times, great experiences, great moments, great laughter, great joy, great variety, great affection, and most of all, great friends! KF is a place where each and everyone can get together to discuss the martial arts in a very friendly atmosphere no matter the rank, and in that, rank has no meaning here, therefore, rank takes a backseat. KF is a place where we're all equal, no matter experience or the lack thereof. KF allows me to escape from the rigorous responsibilities and stress of the Shindokan Hombu as its newly reelected Kaicho, yet rewarding, and to forget about daily expectations and requirements that cross my desk, if only for a moment, to refresh my mind and my spirit. KF allows me that opportunity to broaden my personal and martial arts horizon, to leaps and bounds that are not of the Shindokan world. A chance to reconnect with my fellow martial artists outside of Shindokan. Sometimes I forget that the world is a big place, and in that, the world is full of people from all different walks of life. Full of martial artists that possess a plethora of different experiences and knowledge. I crave that which I don't possess, and the members here at KF, are exceptional people first, and they're exceptional martial artists second. And when I reenter the Shindokan world, I'm revitalized! I'm anew! I'm a better person and a better martial artist because of KF, because of Patrick, because of his staff, and because of each and every KF member!! KF means everything to me, and if my words here have not been clear or my words became muddled, please let me just say this from the bottom of my heart... THANK YOU KARATEFORUMS.COM!! THANK YOU PATRICK!! THANK YOU KF STAFF!! THANK YOU KF MEMBERS...THANK YOU ALL!!
  13. February 23, 2008...3 years ago, wow, I wish I had found KarateForums.com much sooner; well, better late than never.
  14. I shall be in either the live chat or the Livestream. I'm more familiar with chat than I am with Livestream. Either way...I'll be there!! It'll be a lot of fun across the board!!
  15. Congratulations Patrick, his staff, and to all who've contributed to making KarateForums.com what it is today, and what it will be tomorrow, and what it will be in the future...a fun dynamic presence that not only enriches to the betterment of the martial arts, but to the betterment of this community, as well as to the betterment of its members. Patrick....THANK YOU!!
  16. Yes, one can become too preoccupied with trapping, and in that, basics are totally forgotten for the chance to trap, this, imho, is very dangerous. When one traps just because they can, is not a reason to trap, and when one depends only on trapping, that too is dangerous. Even though trapping is very important to our Tuite, I'm not going to always depend on it because I've got so many other things to use with our Tuite. Trapping is natural for any Shindokanist, but, it's not what's written in stone. It's just another tool. Not much standing application of it?!! I disagree with that because Shindokan has its share of standing applications of trapping, and I've never seen our Soke do many ground traps for one reason or another.
  17. Yes, trapping is just another tool to wield whenever the opportunity reveals itself. The right tool for the right job, but boy oh boy, what a tool to use, especially when one truly understands and applies said tool correctly/effectively.
  18. Ev, Remember...BLOCK or DUCK...However, the head/face block are super advanced...as well as...they're secret hidden techniques...sssshhhhhhhhh!
  19. Good topic Jay! Shindokan isn't Shindokan without trapping; it's a cornerstone for our Tuite. In that, I simply love trapping in all of it's simplicity. I can't see our Tuite independently or separate away from trappings. To me, and for me, trappings done right are a beautiful thing to behold, and as Mr. Miyagi says..."Done right, no defense!" Discovered traps, open traps, reverse traps, hidden traps, slipped traps; these are the crown jewels of Shindokan trapping. Give me an honest trap, and I'll give you an honest response.
  20. For as long as I've been doing the MA, I just can't seem to think of that one moment that stands alone. For me to do so, I feel that I'd discredit the other wonderful moments as a lessor thing, when they are, in fact, all amazingly wonderful moments for me. Forgive me my appearance of avoidance to this great topic.
  21. Imho, Baseball....Kata...can't work together! Two great inventions will fight for the number one spot in all things. Please leave them separate.
  22. Oooooooooooooooooo...I think I'm going to like this movie. Thanks for the link Patrick.
  23. Good call...thanks Brian...you saved me!! Gentlemen...start your engines!!
