I am 24 about 5'9" 170 lbs. I have been working out and dieting for a while now and I need your help. 5 years ago when I was a young buck I was a bone crushing 129 lbs. I eat 5 meals a day, creatine and all my protein comes from the meals I eat. I have seemed to hit a plateau.. I keep bouncing from 166 to 170 but no higher.. maybe its my genetic boundary?? any thoughts on what I can do to put on some pounds? my goal is 185.

Size Difference in Takedowns
Throwdown0850 replied to still kicking's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
same here. Mixing it up presents a variety of challenges aside from weight & height differences. First & foremost having a good partner is the most important thing to me. When I say a good partner, I mean someone who when I’m on offense allows me to work through the technique without flinching or fighting against me. … & when I’m on defense doesn’t block with wet noodle arms or drive me through the floor with their technique. Sometimes I line up with a black belt or [insert any color] belt & they want to pontificate about what would work better AFTER we are given instruction. Or I line up with black belt or [insert any color] belt and they drive me through wall with a kick or punch… look, don’t get me wrong I think contact should be required but if I’m leaving myself 100% vulnerable so you can practice a one-step defense I don’t expect to have the wind knocked out me when you drive me to the floor by my throat. If that happens during sparring, shame on me. I think a good partner provides a strong punch or kick that must be blocked. If the punch or kick is not blocked then light contact should be made. The amount of contact made should be a product of rank and persons level of experience with the technique being practiced. [i’m not the best at being a good attacker to a person I’m not familiar with. If I don’t focus I allow my punches to be directed by my anticipation of the block.] Also a good attacker has to okay with being taken down and this isn’t always the case. If someone is trying to break the fall before it happens it makes the entire movement awkward. Assuming I had a good partner to work with that was evenly matched by weight and height, I think I’d end up with a false sense of learning & understanding a technique. I’m a tall guy so in the real world I want to know how my block or attack is going to work on someone before I initiate contact. The perceived down-side to learning with multiple partners is that it seems like it takes foreverrrrrrrrrrrr to get comfortable with a technique however you definitely feel like you own the technique when you finally get it. Agreed, especially in Judo, it is essential to have good ukemi. -

Do my wrists hurt from punching properly???
Throwdown0850 replied to GeoGiant's topic in Health and Fitness
Everything has a limit, maybe you should take a break for a few days on the wrists and see how you feel. maybe you just agitated them from all the work is all? -
I say do what you want, who cares if your instructor doesn't like it, he is your instructor, your paying him to teach you "this" martial art. that is it. not your life coach.

passed my yellow belt grading!
Throwdown0850 replied to Blade96's topic in Share Your Testing, Grading, or Promotion
You guys do stripes though, right? So I guess maybe getting your first stripe or two is how you prove yourselves in the beginning. Yeah, we have three stripes for white We have 5 white belt stripes so it take 6 to 7 months to get to yellow. Yellow has 4 stripes so your looking at 5 to 6 months to get to green. Things get slower after you get your green belt. I was told 8 years is a reasonable time to get a black belt. With what I know now, that sounds about right. I couldn't agree more this is the way it should be. -

That makes sense, especially in the behavior of the BB's of my dojo. With some of them we never said two words to each other. Sempai is a good example. It wasnt that he didnt like me, its just that we pretty much never spoke or hardly even glanced at each other. But once I got promoted - his behavior - and those of other BB's - changed. He smiles at me more, talks to me more. I had a nice chat with him the night of the test when we were at the bar afterwards and got to know him a bit. Its like - they dont hardly really aknowledge white belts very much (well other than the senseis, but I already wrote about them how they show much obvious favoritism to me even more now so) - but yeah, like you said - once I proved myself - they changed. Have you ever noticed that? I can relate to this a little, I am glad it isn't very bad though, cause here you're a white belt for 1 year before you test. -

Newbi question - bowing to your sensei
Throwdown0850 replied to GeoGiant's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
good point but in my opinion, Its just like your job. you leave work at work. My instructor has a name and prefers to be called by his name, not "sensei". We don't bow at all in class. but hey, every school is different. -
