What's you're opinon on sparring?
AndrewGreen replied to sidekick's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
People that stop short just have a poor sense of distancing A punch that misses by an inch is a very well avoided punch, not a "hit". -

Yeah, who would believe a football team that claimed to be good cause they one that Superbowl... Or a runner that said he was fast cause he had an olympic medal... I also think you miss "no style" meaning, but that is ok. Think of it as "Not having stylistic limitations" and you'll be better off. -

YES!!!! Finally someone who knows the truth! -
Not really, Basics and kata don't help sparring all that much. Sparring helps sparring.

Go to a boxing or kickboxing school, they shouldn't have a problem beating you up a little You will need different gear though, that foam stuff is kinda useless for protecting the other guy. All those silly boats to is keep your insteps in tact, which you really shouldn't be kicking with anyways... -

Most "death match" stories are somewhat exagerrated if not entirely made up Myth and Mystique are what keeps many schools open. -

Not all martial arts come from China. Some Chinese schools claim that for marketing purposes though. Boxing, Wrestling and Pankration where In the ancient Olympics. No Chinese influence. The Egyptians have wall painting depicting fighting systems dating back farther then in China There is evidence to support Chinese martial arts Where started in India. The world is a small place, different cultures influence each other. A few hundred years ago China was very influential. But not all marital arts originate in China. Saying that is silly. Every culture has it's own fighting traditions. -

Actually I bet Tyson walks through K-1 pretty easily... But your right, FOr Kickboxing compeition boxing does not have all the necessary skills to be effective. Good point, Supports the kung fu guys don't do well in MMA argument nicely. Oh.... but one minor difference A lot of K-1 fighters also train boxing. How many MMA fighters train Kung Fu? -

Sure you can, at least when it comes to it's ability to work in that event. In a NHB fight, Kung fu didn't fo well, end of story. The skills needed to do well aren't there. But fighting is not the only reason to train. Most people train for fun and excercise. Different people find different things fun. -
Nonsense I start people sparring almost right away, no one gets hurt. No one gets scarred. I have a lot less injuries this way. People get hurt when the person in charge doesn't know how to teach sparring, and just pads them up and says go.
-
He said freestyle practice, not tournament fighting. Sparring is absolutely essential to developing any sort of effective skills. Tournament fighting is fairly useless.

" After that, you will need to perfect your skills in your own, personal, system. And, once you've done that... guess what? Yeppers, you will no longer be a mixed martial artist. Imagine that... *poof*" Imagine that, a play on words..... -

Way to argue semantics.... But what have you accomplished? Nothing really.... Defeat the argument by redefining the terms to something that the person making it doesn't mean them as. That is called a straw man -
Here's the thing though, Without a set up any submission you know is useless Perhaps you are looking for the wrong things It's like having a good Hook without any footwork or a jab... Good for you, and good luck pulling it off... What you need to learn is not submissions, but how to set them up and land them.

lol... Yeah... Well I hate to break it to you but there are people that do MMA that have no interest in competing too. But you are absolutely right, I'm sure there is a Shaolin monk who does kata, spends 8 hours a day meditating and could Dim mak all the UFC fighters... That's a really bad argument. All the guys that compete aren't really any good, REAL kung fu people don't compete, nor step up to any challenges, or demonstrate there skills against a person that is fighting back.... ever.... doing so would go againt the true spirit of martial arts.... hehehe.... I enjoyed writing that, you guys are funny -

Kung Fu people learn to dance and call it fighting... so Seriously, you clearly lack any knowledge of MMA so why comment like that? It is no less ignorant then the one I just made -

Beginner Styles?
AndrewGreen replied to Reizende's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
You can do any style...... FInd one that has a instructor you like, and training partners you get along with and you'll be fine. Ask people what style and they'll probably tell you whatever one they do. That said, I recommend you find a Mixed Martial Arts school -
How to deal with the kids class troublemaker?
AndrewGreen replied to OrenJuMok's topic in Instructors and School Owners
Yep, and that is much harder to do Every case is different. Different kids act out for different reasons, there is no one miracle solution. If all else fails suspensions and bannings come in. Never had to kick a kid out for their behaviour. Parent once though... -
So we take a pile of poo. Rearrange it and claim it is no longer poo? If you don't like belts, don't use belts. I don't and it works great!

You can do it with wraps, or gauze and sports tape. There are ankle supports you can get, or you can use sports tape. Boxers wear shoes.
