  1. All the Okinawan styles are basically the same. Just some stylistic differences and different kata. Styles are a recent creation.
  2. umm.... do some counting in your kata guys.... 90 / 10 to hands easy....
  3. Handwraps w/ Boxing Gloves Grappling Gloves Foam dipped gloves are only good for ripping.... They don't breath, are terribly uncomfortable, rip easliy, slid around and really don't protect you all that much.
  4. Belonging to a big organization is like running a franchise. It's there for standards and name recognition. But the standards aren't very high. Independent restraunts can be A LOT better, or a lot worse. Same for martial arts schools. My school is independent. I refuse to let someone else tell me what to teach and what my standards should be.

    seisan

Yes, after the third punch you shuffle in, double high blocks. Pivot, arms cross and double downward action
  6. It's all about movement. You can be seperated Clinched Or on the ground Pure striking does not give you all 3 Pure grappling does That is why in mixed competition Grapplers generally win. If you want to be a well rounded MAist you need to be able to control position, anywhere. And to do this you NEED some grappling. You also need a strategy on what you are going to do from that position. This can be restrain, strike, choke, cause pain, break, dislocate, etc. All are good tools, not all are good for all situations.

    seisan

Andrew Scratches head.... You shuffle up, do the double high block (wedge block) turn, cross hands and double open hand downward action... I have never seen anyone add a x-block into that....

    seisan

You mean the downward open hand action done on the turn?
  9. Why is it a one or the other? How about mounting him then punching till he turns over then choking him? Is that striking or grappling? How about Clinching and striking from there? Is that striking or grappling? Both are important, it's not a matter of one or the other. Oh and see also the Hundreds of threads on this topic on every Martial arts forum on the net

    seisan

X-Block in Seisan? Do you mean the wedge block at the end of the opening sequence? This is the Isshin ryu version of seisan right? Oh, and you don't grab the arm and pull 3 times, that would be a silly thing to do. That sequence has many other possible applications.
  11. Leaning vack into a round kick counter balances your leg and lets you fit harder. The non-swing arm defends your face. This also brings you out of range of a counter punch. The swing arm can also be stuffed in his face instead of low.

  13. For the record. escrima is a system, not a weapon. You want to learn how to use sticks, not escrimas.
  14. Arm bar Key Lock Arm Triangle Sleeve Choke Guillotine Triangle Arm loop Trap the arm around the head and take the back Lots of choices
  15. Again, I would rather be on the ground with your arms tied up and unable to reach for a weapon should there be one then seperated where you can reach for whatever you want whenever you want.
  16. Many wise men are only wise cause they told you they where. But there is a simple test. TRY IT! Find someone that is good at grappling, and have a go. From experience we get poked less on the gound then standing. Why? Cause it is easier to control the arms.
  17. One thing that can be learnt threw sparring with weapons is it is a lot easier to prevent someone from getting a weapon, or using a weapon when you are on the ground. At a distance they can get it out and use it easy. Then your best strategy (Apart from running) is to get into a grappling range and control the weapon hand then try to get it away from them. If I was worried about a weapon, I'd want to be clinched or on the ground. Not at a distance.
  18. Let me rephrase it. Have you spent much time SPARRING on the ground with knives. More specifically for this question, in the guard with a knife.
  19. You've not grappled with knifes much have you?
  20. Gene Simco's Brazillian Juijitsu: The Master Text should get a mention
  21. Beer-monster That is a rather big question.... Gi chokes - you need to use your legs and pull him in tight. Kimura - It's probably in your hips that you are missing, at least thats where I find most people have trouble. As you fall back get your hips out. Your leg should block him from pulling his arm in. Hip movement is the key to just about everything. Upward, side to side, spinning, rotatiting, etc. Move your hips. Open your guard. A closed guard is defencive, if you want to be offencive open it and use your legs. Work your sweeps, you're better off on top. Cycle what you are trying to do, don't keep working a failed attack Always be threatening to sweep, submit, stand or take the back. And cycle through them.
  22. Or he hugs you're legs, and passes guard.... Some things might work on people that don't know what they are doing, but this is not a good idea against someone that does.
  23. Kata competition is always biased. Not sometimes, always. No way around it. Accept it as part of the game
  24. Grab a pair of 16 oz gloves, headgear and a mouthpiece and go at it. Overhooks are you're friend and keep tight.
  25. Keeps the IQ of the students down so that they are easy to control
