I think he means he moves as you are hitting him, messing up your perfect alignment, becuase that target is in a different place, at a different angle, and moving towards you....
-
Well, tying it into the above poster and faith... When you start praying to a porceline god, it's too much

Yes, that's where it gets is name is that it crosses over the jab, but it doesn't have to be a counter punch to be a cross. As for the mits, that's also safety, if it doesn't cross the body you risk catching your feeder in the face
-
No, it's a result of the hand being made up of many small bones.

"All that proves is that the guys in the UFC are bad punchers. I've only seen one karate player break a hand in my lifetime of training." Or that they, as professional athletes and fighters, know how to hit harder then the karate guys you've met.

Go beyond the first one to where some started wearing gloves, it was the hardest hitters and guys that got the most KO's that where wearing gloves. Cuts and bleeding go down though, making it more tv friendly, but harder on the insides.

Self Defense Techniques anyone?
AndrewGreen replied to younwhagrl's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Shito Ryu has a lot more then Shotokan Anyways, I got one, "win" Memorizing a checklist of techniques isn't going to help anyone, if you want stuff that works it needs to be adaptable and practiced live. Otherwise it's just choreography. -
Also from Answers.com: Martial Arts - Any of several Asian arts of combat or self-defense, such as aikido, karate, judo, or tae kwon do, usually practiced as sport. Often used in the plural. I'd say there are some inaccuracies in there...

How important is Ch'i?
AndrewGreen replied to raven91's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
Not a Chinese stylist and I go with not at all. -
How do you get from doctor to martial artist? And why should a doctor not drink? Hawkeye did just fine

http://lannamuaythai.com/thaiboxing/straight_01.html That's a cross. Do a little more searching around if you like, but a cross is a straight punch thrown off the back side.
-
So, trust a website over people that actually train, watch and coach the stuff? A cross goes straight down the center off the rear leg.
-
I think if you dig around you will find that a good number of the old karate masters quite enjoyed there drinking. Choki Motobu and Chotoku Kyan immediately spring to mind... Having fun and relaxing are important for ones health, living "proper" is borring. Unless taken to excess there is nothing wrong with drinking, when taken to far it causes problems. But so does being excessively a prude

Because without the gloves, you'd break your hands. Wrap them up, glove them up and you can hit a lot harder, which bounce the brain around a lot more, which does more damage. Even the ancient greeks protected there hands when boxing, and later on that protection involved inserting metal rivets into the protection.
-
Protecting the hands increases the impact of the punch.

teleport your movements? THat sounds cool, how do I learn to teleport my movements? Anyways, a hook is all body and comes from the legs, very little arm or swing in it. And that's where all power punches get there power, from your legs, hips is missleading, cause while they do rotate in with the punch, it is the legs that power this. Proper alignment is also very important, on a cross if you flair your elbow it becomes just your arm powering it as the elbow absorbs the body's influence. On a hook you want to hit with your forearm perpendicular to your target.

I suggest not using that wording when speaking with your instructors... I believe you mean a Hakama.

What I consider paramount to any ki practice
AndrewGreen replied to SenseiMike's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
How about something that shows the human mind is capable of manipulating and harnessing these energies? Everything that has tried to show this has failed. Just cause quantum mechanics says some neat things in no way proves ki exists. -

Umm... Ok, but can you point to a few scientific studies that demonstrate the existance of Ki? -
Get people to hit you in sparring. Very quickly you will realise that some blocks are useless and figure out what you need to do to avoid getting hit. Which, truthfully, blocking is not a big part of. Traditional blocks attack the arm, but by doing so expose yourself. This is fine against a much lower level fighter, but against a skilled fighter it will get you hit with the follow up.
-
Cool, then you should head to nearest University and share this important insight, I'm sure the wrestling team will be very greatful if you can show them how to become untouchable... More likely, you'll get single legged really quickly and they will laugh about it for a quite a while afterwards.
-
There is actually a good case to be made that MMA is safer without the gloves as fighters can't hit as hard without them. They really do nothing to prevent damage to the person getting hit, except superficial damage like cuts. The brain actually gets bounced around more.
-
No offence, but it sounds like all the guys you've sparred with had really weak takedowns. Quite common in lower level BJJ as that is not what they focus on. A strong stance makes you easier to takedown for someone that knows what they are doing.
-
ok... why not?
