  1. What's the name of the book you have?
  2. So JJJ must be just like Bjj then, you really have to wait to earn your next belt. Right?
  3. Arnis Self-Defense:Stick, Blade, and Empty-Hand Combat Techniques of the Philipines by Jose Paman. It's really good for background on the art, and the very basics of the art itself.
  4. I read about it in BlackBelt Mag. It sounds pretty good.
  5. So I just bought my first book arnis! I read the whole thing in 2 days. It turns out arnis practitioners first learn to fight with the stick, then knives, then empty hands. The principle here is that in a real life self defense situation an attacker is likely to have a weapon. Also, the same movements that are used for the stick, translate to the knife, and even the empty hand techniques. So exectly what Bushido said is true. It is common for arnis/kali/escrima. Anyway, I can't wait to buy another book on arnis. We do alot of philipino weaponry at my school, but not till the advanced belts, so I figure I'l read up on whatever I can get my hands on to know some background and base material for the future.
  6. Welcome.
  7. Well It isn't his school. So that's why his information isn't listed. Idk. I'm going to ask him the next time I train.
  8. Let me know how that knife fighting book is.
  9. Black Belt magazine actually had a two part article on this. Try to look it up on their website. It was in the past fewmonths. I don't really remember which ones.
  10. So do you think there should be an age limit on getting your black belt?
  11. Most of the techniques at my school are taught in one stance, but on my own time I try to practice them on both. Most of the basic strikes are taught on both sides however at my school.
  12. That kick is nice. I've never tried it but it makes sense how he says if the target wasn't there when I threw the kick, it isn't going to be there when he spins around, and how you can't change your kick in mid air.
  13. I definitely know what you mean about the whole "who did you receive your belt from?" issue as well as your lineage. What is all of your opinions on junior black belts though?
  14. https://www.lockflow.com I use this website. It has alot of techniques listed. I don't know if it has what you are looking for, but it may come in handy.
  15. Do you mean schools that would rather "hand out" belts and make money rather than honor the true value of martial arts?...
  16. I didn't know starting this thread would stir up such controversy. My goal as of right now is to consistently improve my physical fitness and reach black belt. That does not mean that once I reach that point, I will give up on my physical training. I want to forever improve my mental and physical well being, as long as there is always a mentor there to guide me along. I'm not sure if everyone would agree with me on that or not, but it sounds like a good plan to me and I will try to stick by it the best I can. I agree with alot of different things all of you have said. I think maybe after blackbelt, mental training is more of the process, but that's not to say phsical training is thrown aside. As for the politics aspect, I'm not sure I understand what any of you's may mean. Could you explain please?
  17. Yea, I heard the same thing.
  18. I've never used it in sparring, but we practice it frequently with a low hook just as you mentioned.
  19. I train at Satori Academy of Martial Arts. My instructor is Shihan Roland Costanzo. And in all honesty, I'm really not sure who he is taught by in bjj. But I guess this gives me ever reason to ask and find out.
  20. When you are on your path to black belt, you train several times a week, working your way to your goal of black belt. But my question is, when you become a black belt, how often do you train? More? Less? The same? And I know this usually is the preference of the black belt, but I am asking this to those who have reached black belt and are speaking from experience.
  21. Before I started my train, I was lifting 3 times a week for 1 hour sessions at the gym. Now that I train(and still lift that often), I notice that I am far more limber than I use to be even thought I still lift as often. So I guess what I'm trying to say is that lifting won't hurt you or your training. I keep my strength in case I ever needed it against an opponent who was bigger, but I have all my knowledge from training.Like renegade said, I try to do alot of compound exercises too.
  22. I agree with nine_weapons. Thats one of the drills I do in a circuit of mine on training days. It works really well.
