My style uses the typical karate punch, with the elbows kept in all the way through the punching motion. It occurred to me today, however, that keeping the elbows in makes the tricepts responsible for most of the pushing, and almost entirely cuts out the chest. If you are on a bench press, you can press much more weight with your elbows out close to 90 degrees to your (allowing your pectorals to push), than if you tried to puch with your elbows tucked in to your side. So wouldn't it be a good idea to, when punching, chamber the fist at the shoulder with the elbow out 90 degrees instead of at the hip with the elbow in? Wouldn't this let the powerful chest muscles help push the punch out? Why then, does karate teach punching from the hip with the elbows in?

Ever had to use your MA in a real sreet fight

I wouldn't have beaten him up, I'm just not that violent. I would have, at most, grabbed him by the collar and told him never to LOOK at my girlfriend ever again. But before I could do even that, he told the office that I threatened to kill him. So they even got the police involved, and called a whole bunch of people down to talk (except me), and we were told to leave eachother alone. Anyways, back to the topic of the thread, people have generally steered clear of me, so I've never had to use my training. I've probably had 3 opportunities, but I dealt with them without violence. -

BLH28, I hate how a school system would reccomend someone acting in self-defense for expulsion. They are getting rediculous. When I was in high school there was a guy who was untouchable. Not because he was strong or anything, but he would actually tell on you before you did anything. He did some terrible things to me and my girlfriend including sexually harrassing her, and I couldn't do anything because he got the school office on his side right after he did it. -
Very true. I started University this month, and the person I've hung out with the most is the girl who approached me on the first day.

I start my first year of University in September. I'm going to Ryerson University in Toronto, Ontario, Canada for Radio and Television Arts.

He must cross-train a lot, because as far as I know, there is no spinning side kick in Muay Thai. So I'm guessing he picked up a little karate somewhere.

to stretch or not to stretch - is that the question?
DokterVet replied to Icetuete's topic in Health and Fitness
Well if you are flexible, you could easily prove him wrong by doing a really high leg lift or low splits and ask to see his. -
Even though I posted advice, I agree that you should not try to teach someone karate if you do not know karate. Perhaps just read him our responses. The instructor should correct his kicks, not just fail him and tell him they are wrong. If the instructor isn't going to teach, then what are you paying for? I suggest asking him for help, and if he is upset or refuses, find new teacher.

I find most beginners have trouble with side kick and basically end up doing a roundhouse kick until they get it. Side kick is a difficult kick. The key is to pull your butt in (or rotate your hips forward) when the kick goes out. He should practice kicking very low in order to get it. If his butt is sticking out, he doesn't have it yet. The motion of the foot should not swing around like a roundhouse kick; it shoots straight out into the target. In order to do this, you need to chamber it like a front kick: Knee way up, leg vertical. Getting the knee up is ESSENTIAL even for low kicks. He may have been taught to chamber in front of him, then twist as he throws the kick out (This way is harder, but IMO more powerful), or to turn sideways as he brings his leg up, then throw the leg out. Either way is valid; he should do it the way in which his instructor taught him. And just a comment on Monkeygirls' post, often in karate roundhouse kicks are done with the feet in a 'front kick position' with the toes pulled up and contacting with the ball of the foot. This is a penetrating kick to the body as opposed to the 'whacking' horizontal hit that is usually attributed to roundhouses. Most karate clubs will eventually teach to use both contact areas for roundhouses, but the white belt should just do it the way he has been taught.

Does anyone else find it stupid that nunchuku are illegal in lots of places where you can get a gun no problem?

I was reading Chuck Norris' book The Secret Power Within, and on the same page he mentions that he learned Tae Kwon Do in Korea, and that when he came back to America he opened up a Karate school and taught Karate. I think I've also heard people say he does Tang Soo Do. So what's the deal? Which art does he do?

The word "Style" is misleading.

I've often heard the term "judo player". It does sound weird, but that seems to be what many judoka prefer. -
I think that is a good idea... once you reach a certain point, I don't think you need any more ranks. In other news, I just got my black belt last night. Wooo! Time to start learning, eh?

Actually I'm going for my shodan ranking, and I'm trying to determine where to do it!

Devastating throws

Wow...to be honest, that sounds a little to good to be true... -
In pinan sandan, do you perform a kiai on the spear hand, or the punch a few moves later (after the backfist)? I've seen it both ways, and wonder how many people do it each way.

Know of any shuai chiao clubs in toronto? Also, does it have the same kind of competition as judo or wrestling? The karate I do is way too much budo and philosiphizing and stuff. I just want to throw people around!! -
Thanks guys! I record every once and a while.... when I feel like it. I've been focusing on working out more than guitar lately though. Maybe I'll record monkeygirl's riff for her. My guitar is an Epiphone les paul standard. Cherry Sunburst. The pickups are both Seymour Duncan '59s. The tuners are Schaller locking tuners. The jack and toggle switch have been replaced, and I've installed strap locks (can't live without them). My amp is a peavey studio pro 112. It's just a 60 watt solid state combo, but it does the job done. I've been looking for a cheap 5150 or Marshall JTM series for a while, but now I need money for University. I also play a Fender DG-7 acoustic. It's not very good. The playability and tone are both below average. I reccomend a Takamine or Yamaha acoustic instead.

Me. Here's a clip of me playing. http://www.digitalsoundplanet.com/Members/000067352_000002096.mp3 I also like modifying my guitar. Most recently I put on a set of Schaller locking tuners. They are very cool.

baseball bats in fights
DokterVet replied to aznkarateboi's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
A non-baseball player and non-martial artist against Mas Oyama? I'd like to see that. In fact I'd pay to see it. In fact I'd like to see him take on Ortiz or Sakuraba. -
Awesome! I wouldn't want to mess with those guys. There is an awesome head kick knockdown there.

From what I've seen, Half life 2 looks incredible. In terms of graphics and physics it's the best looking thing I've ever seen. I never played the original half life, except for mods (counter strike, earth special forces), but from what I hear, it ruled, so HL2 should be amazing.
