  1. Well thanks for the advice guys.. Is there something really wrong with trying to meditate with my eyes open? Would I be unable to achieve the same effectiveness?
  2. The thing is, that happens when I try to fall asleep too. I need to think of things or my eyes start to hurt. I think I may be doomed.
  3. I have trouble clearing my mind, trying to meditate, and that sort of thing. This is because whenever I try closing my eyes and not thinking actively, my eyes start to hurt. It's like they are going cross-eyed, and I have to either open them, or start thinking about things. Is there anything I can do?
  4. I actually think a somewhat short, well-built body is ideal for karate. There is a black belt in my organization who is built like you - really short and stocky with EXTREMELY short legs. He is known for his kicks. Those things can fly out as quick as fists. It's crazy. I'm tall and thin, and I think I am far from the ideal body type for karate. But I deal with it, my legs are long and I can keep people away well with them.
  5. TKD_McGee, which book is that quote ("...bow to no man...") from? I am christian, and practice karate in a local church, and I don't have a problem with bowing to my dojo, my classmates, or instructors. I'd have to read the quote in context to understand it, but similarly to much of the bible, I might not interpret that line literally.
  6. three60roundhouse, they are quite clear that we have to wear a 'traditional' gi. I am friends with the president of the organization so I can talk to him about it I suppose. I never actually thought about questioning it...but rolling up my sleeves all the time is annoying.
  7. I do Wado Ryu and our hand rests just above our hip. On the fat roll if you have it. We keep it a bit further back than in the picture, but keep in mind we don't know if he had begun a technique when the picture was taken.
  8. Actually I also like Naihanchi Sandan. That's because it's really easy and I've done well in tournaments doing it.
  9. The only thing I don't like about the gis that we have to wear is that they are long-sleeved. That is stupid, because most people's sleeves just get in the way. Personaly, mine completely cover my fist, and it's dangerous because fingers and such can get caught on an opponent's gi. Everyone at my club rolls their sleeves up. I do it, my sensei does it, the head sensei does it. But we still have to use the long-sleeved ones and just roll them up all the time.
  10. Does anyone know the name of the white guy that Jackie Chan fights twice in Gorgeous? That guy was awesome, but his name isn't even mentioned on the movie cover. The last fight in that movie was one of the best I've seen.
  11. I hate guns... In Canada handguns are illegal, but since you can get them so easily in the states, every group of thugs has one. So it means criminals have them and we don't - why can't america come to its senses and stop giving these things to everyone? I've been robbed at gunpoint one block away from my house in a rich suburb of Toronto. If they didn't have a gun my friends and I could have mopped the floor with them, no contest. Instead they took my belongings and ruined my evening. I hate guns....they just give power to the corrupt and lazy. They do not benefit anything. The only people that have them here are cops and criminals. The cops only need them because the criminals have them. STOP MAKING GUNS!!!
  12. Even for women, I don't really reccomend hitting the groin. Depending on the guy and the hit, he can just become really angry and get an adrenaline rush. I've gotten kicked pretty hard there while sparring with friends, and I instantly get bloodlust and challenge everyone in the room. I say if you fear for your safety, go for the eyes and nose if you can.
  13. My favourite is Wansu. I just learned it recently, and it has coolness to spare.
