In my mind, these are the 2 major martial art nations. They both have created many styles over the last 2000 years. Although Chinese Martial arts are older in general, japanese styles evloved virtually independent of their Chinese father. What do you think are the key general differences between Japanese and Chinese martial arts? This is not "which country has better martial artists" thread, but just a general history of their respective evolutions. Take Care

Art vs art?!?!?

I agree Ti-Kwon-Leap. Combat is constantly changing and evolving, the out come can never be realistically pre judged simply due to style. Take Care -

Your students will beat me up for disagreeing with you, then unfortunately that is a measure of your style. You have my sympathy. But, I would agree that readiness is very important. Always focusing on your surroundings, being aware of every movement. Also, after reading your posts, I cant also see the benefits of Mixing. I might consider taking Iaido. I would also have to say that I have argued this in an ignorant manor. Really just to have an arguement. For that I apologies. It is true that I am in no position to judge, nor does what you do effect me in anyway. It goes against the prinicples of my style to simply fight for fightings sake, for that again I apologies. History. The ones that are remembered. I am going to end this by only saying that I dont like mixing. Nor do I think doing one art resticts me in any way. But thats just me. Take Care. -

I accept your apology. My point being is that the great traditional masters included in their styles what they felt was most important. No offence, but you are no great master, neither am I, so who are you to tamper with greatness? That is just what I think anyway. Take Care. -
Your english is fine dont worry. When trying to choose a style dont worry about how is compares. Just focus on what it means to you. If you can practice Karate well, then you can match anyone, but its really all about YOU when it comes down to defeating them.

Martial artist, I have made my point, also, in no way are you going to change my mind on the subject. To think that MA's are solely about fighting is just ignorant. Take Care -

I agree radok. Martial Artist. "the martial arts are about combat" For me and for all true martial artists, the martial arts are a way of life, not only forms of combat. They are an expression of the soul, and what one believes in. I prefer to think of martial arts as a continuous evolution of life "How can you find purity in limitation?" One must experience form, before one can appreciate formlessness. If you feel your style is limited, then perhaps you should choose another. Again thanks for your reply. Take Care -

Point taken Venezolano. Take Care. -
I would agree Jerry. But with constant training, you can achieve all locks. Especially with the aid of Atemi Waza. Thats from my experience. Pacificshore I heard this story about my Sensei. He was training as usual someone attacked him with a knife on the mat, have no idea why. My Sensei would always say focus on what you have learnt, let gravity do the rest. Back to the story, when my sensei took the throw, he also kept on the lock resulting in something popping out and a broken wrist. Not nice In Aikido we are usually very nice to our Uke's, he.she is my Uke not my enemy. Take Care

Martial Artist. Please dont take offence. I am sure that you have some great ability that will put all us mono artists to shame. But the fact is, to do a martial art justice, one needs to dedicate your whole life to it. That sole art. It takes a life time to perfect one, so how can someone perfect more than one? I am sure that as I pass though life I will see other styles and think thats cool. I love reading about EVERY style, I appreciate every one. But that does not mean I have to study it. How can I do more than one art justise? I also consider myself lucky that I study a style that is everything I want, and I have done my share of styles to find the one I want. But I find myself amused that you can say this: "The less I have to worry about facing an opponent who can do something I won't expect." So are you saying in this case that you know every move of Aikido, and the counter? So I am at a disadvantage? The wonder of one complete style is that you have a little something for anything that comes at you, whether I get it right or not is a different question. Also Martial artist, I will continue down my path, not because I feel that I could learn nothing from mixing, but that I am happy with what I have. That is whats important in MA. Also if you think that all MA's are about is combat, that is very sad. I consider aikido to give me all the "weapons" I need. But is that what it is all about. The philosophys themselves are very different, and from style to style contridict each other. So how can you believe in two philosophys. But thanks for the challanging reply. Venezolano. hmm. I really dont know what to say, I am obviously doing a useless style. I had better go tell the Doshu. I am sure he will shut down the all the AIkido dojo's. I am glad that you told me this, phew. lol Joking aside, you have not done Aikido long enough to slam its self defence abilities. Nor would I slam BJJ's. Like all MA's skill does not come over night. And especially with internal styles it takes even longer. If one becomes excellent at ONE style, then the attack itself does not matter. There are some limited styles that dont cover everything, so mixing would be a good idea in that case. Take Care -
What do you think of Aikido?
Kensai replied to Kensai's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Perhaps you should go to an Aikido dojo, learn for a year or two then come back and we can talk. The point of these attacks in Aikido, is that it covers the whole sphere, if you can do something against ANYTHING that enters the sphere, then you are ready for any attack. Take Care -

Venezolano we have already had these discussions, to be honest you are new here, and are in that period when you first come to a forum to bash other styles. So I cant be bothered to have this dicussion with you. But I will say this, is the effectivenss of a style only related to how it proforms in the Commerical NHB. Where most dangerous moves are banned. Like small joint manipulation and certain strikes. Answer me that. Take Care -

What do you think of Aikido?
Kensai replied to Kensai's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Unrealistic? Thats your opiniuon. I respect that. I agree it takes time to master. But whats worth doing if it is easy. I have found the techniques to be more than easy to apply, but you must use Ki, not strength. Thats that main thing. Take Care -
Xtreme Fury, I study Aikido, the throws are very interesting point. But as the wise ZakariRu said its either a broken wrist or you move with it, which usually ends up in a broken wrist. BUt as soon as the pain on the wrist is put on, you really cant think of anything else apart from to make it stop. The Wrist is full of pressure points, that is also why is is so effective. Also about the person being twice your size, well, I have been reading about Sensei Suenaka. He teachs in Hawaii, a large American guy came into his dojo and asked him to put on a wrist lock. Sensei Suenaka being only 5"8 and this huge muscle bound American it would seems a forgon conclusion. Well Suenaka put on the Nikkyo technique and this guy was just too strong. So the American laughed and said is this the measure of Aikido, Sensei Suenaka, then asked if this was a REAL fight situation. The American guy said do whatever, so Sensei Suenaka, Ki struck his throat, the wrist lock went on and the American flew into the floor, with a wrist frauctured in 6 places. The moral of this story is that any lock can be applied as you as you move someones mind. Take Care.
