  1. Weapons training is also going to depend on the school. Aside from a quick lesson on using a pen lower belts don't do weapons at my school. BB's are just now beginning to learn short stick tech's.
  2. I think that most of us TKD people would agree that low kicks are better for the street. People seem to think we're too...ah, set in our ways to realize that. Good point about the cold too BlueDragon. It gets too icy up here to kick much.
  3. That's a great way to think of it Aikidoka. I think I'll steal that ...yoink
  4. The USTU suggests 33 months to get a black belt. This amount of time is only supposed to be valid if you are very dedicated in your training and usually takes longer. The average at our school is about 3 1/2 to 4 years.
  5. Ah you cannuks, so silly. All I have to add is go watch the movie Strange Brew. Take off ya hosers, eh.
  6. Hi Hapkidodude, I'd love to train in hapkido but there's nothing close by. One of my instructors in the UofM club trained in hapkido and showed me a few moves after class. My favorite one is where they start by grabing your wrists, you go up and over their hands to break the hold, grab their uniform and yank them down, twist around behind their back and choke them with their own shirt. Man that was fun.
  7. Below black belt if you knock someone out you'll get disqualified too. I'm not sure what I think about this. Any opinions?
  8. Wow, a support group for sweaty MA'ists. I'm in. Now how do I get that out of my uniform Submission Fighter, I'm very impressed with your english, far better than my second language. keep it up.
  9. It's sad when things like that happen. I've been fortunate so far in my tournaments. example:The U of M club gets together with the MI tech club every year for a tournament. Everyone treated the other guy with respect and admiration (gee that was great when you... and could you show me how you..). We all (>100) ordered pizza afterwards(pizza hut guy nearly fainted: How many pizza's?!). It was fun and a real chance to get together as martial artists. Isn't this what TKD should be about?
  10. My last test (for 3rd gup brown in TKD) took about a 1/2 hr. two forms, one steps, 3 sparring matches, breaks, and questions. At 2nd gup we start adding forms/onesteps you've done before in additon to new matterial. The tests get longer the further you progress but the 'real' test is done before hand to show you are ready.
  11. well, I said bo. Concealment wasn't an issue in the poll so i didn't think about that part of it. A bo or staff has a great reach advantage, hurts like ---, and you don't need to kill/maim someone to use it effectively as with a knike or sword.
  12. Myself, no injuries so far. I've seen two bad ones happen though. 1)Back kick to the FACE! resulted in microfractures to the ocipital bone. Steel plate required. 2) Another kick to the face (different person). Axe kick at TKD nationals. Broke the guys nose. It doesn't take as much oomph as you think it would to seriously hurt someone with a pushing type of kick. Save these tech's for body shots or the street.
  13. Pil Sung - second to none, and our school modo too
  14. Ax kick...heck yah! At nationals one of our black belts open up with this move and scored a knockout. Felt bad for the guy, ax kick broke his nose too. Crescent/side combo for me. Esp when they get in close.
  15. Well, I've been in here a while but I'll give it a whirl. I'm currently a 3rd gup brown belt in TKD. Our school is WTF and takes it's basics from Ji Do Kwon and Song Moo Kwon. I began training at our schools affiliate club at the University of Minnesota but have since transfered to the main school due to graduation. Recently I took a junior scientist position at the U so I hope to be able to pop back into the University club from time to time.
  16. Thanks Rush, Taezee too. May all your breaks be boards and not bones!
  17. I've been told I sound like Nicholas Cage and look a bit like Cameron in Ferris Bulers day off. I dont get it myself.
  18. I agree, gotta mix up your training.
  19. Rushman, I posted the breaks my school does on page 1 of this thread. I've done breaks up through brown belt, so some experience but not a ton. My TKD school is based on (forgive my spelling here) Ji do kwon and song moon kwon, I beleive. I've only done 1 board on some other hand breaks so far (knife, ridge, palm). Let me also clarify that as of right now I don't feel ready to break concrete, and won't try it on my own. Maybe in the future, but not until I've trained a bit more.
  20. Level of focus, the feeling of ellation (sp?) from doing the break, physical moment of impact... Like I said maybe this cant really be answered unless you do the break yourself.
  21. What are peoples favorite onesteps? Level you learned it and brief description please. Purple #1 step out, double knife hand block, sweep the leg, pin their shoulder to the ground, pummel their face gotta love the sweeps
  22. Quick question, not sure if you can really answer it: What does it "feel" like to break concrete? I haven't done this yet. Compare it to breaking boards in terms of physical feeling and emotions.
  23. 1) Enter the Dragon...'nuff said 2) Fist of Legend. w/ Jet Li very cool, better w/ subtitles 3) Crouching Tiger Hiden Dragon. more of a Fairy tale really but beautifully done
  24. A ravens player died too?! I thought it was just Korey Stringer from the Vikings (heat stroke) and the MI college player (asthema). Please be careful when you train people, drink lots of fluids.
  25. Thanks Ken. I find that I really do like to punch with the tonfa in addition to the swinging strikes. The elbow or forearm strike is nasty too.
