  1. well i dont know what to tell you..you cant train for combat by shadow boxing
  2. been waiting and waiting for the new season and sunday there back..this is by far my favorite show.anybody else love "this thing of ours?"
  3. ive read a few... the best one i liked was "bruce lee fighting spirit" by bruce thomas you can get it online at barnes and noble...
  4. there is no substitute for training with others..especially when training for combat..if private lessons mean you dont take class with others then i would change and attend the regular class with other students
  5. i work plenty of hours and squeeze in the time to train..believe me im not close to being rich..if i could i would train alot more..fortunately now that i am a instructor i dont pay for classes ..only volunteer my time to teach class or asssit my sahbumnim..and hes just barely making his bills otherwise he would pay me for my time.....and funny thing is we hear the oppisite over here..that in korea you practice 8-12 hours a day..and that the government pays for your training..obvously thats not the case..keep in mind also that all you may see about america is on tv..only the good stuff..theres plenty of poor hungry..suffering people over here who miss meals much less miss martial arts lessons

  7. with so much politics involed in just each organization not to mention individual schools no way this would ever happen
  8. what was meant to make us appear "weak' has done the exact oppisite..we all were unified in that morning..first in disbelief and horror but then in our anger and resolve that we would not be intimidated by such cowards... I personally have changed in that i dont let every little thing bother me now...i dont take things for granted and I show those aroound me that i care more openly... we americans also need to not only remember those who fell a year ago but that we have our military people and from other countries out there..making sacrifices on a daily so that we may continue our lives without constant fear..and also to stay aware..that we are still at war and this time the battle front is not just thousands of miles away ..were we can just read about it or watch it on tv..but right here at home
  9. deby that guy is definetly no joke..surprised i havent heard of him before...this is korean style kicking at its finest form..makes me feel like a yellow belt again!! make that white belt..wow and by the way i can do that (yeah right) im lucky ive got my 360 kicks down..ive a feeling im going to be going through alot of pain trying to replicate some of those kicks
  10. pretty cool site i cant seem to get any of the videos to work however
  11. a black belt used to mean alot to me...when i first started training.you saw a black belt..and you saw the way he?she carried themselves..and the motivation was there that someday..id be one too..six and a half years later i "earned" my black belt..it wasnt given to me..i didnt purchase it..I knew what it meant on that day to be a black belt..now today..black belts seem to out number color ranks.. you got five..six year olds with black belts..you have people training for two years who have black belts..honorary black belts...it doesnt have the same meaning or honor it once did..
  12. i started taekwondo in 1980 because i had a fight in school in which I wound up with a big bump on my head following a rank out contest on moms this kid named bobby( forgot his last name) started with me one day..so I took his school bus home..walked up to his door and as his mom answered I yanked him out on the front lawn and started wailing on him!! he was laughing the whole time..i tumbled with him and my forehead hit the curb resulting in a big baseball sized knot on my head..the next day at school he had told everyone that he had punched me there cuasing the knot!! i actually started martial arts by subscribing to a mail in karate lessons company which would show me "new deadly moves" every week!! I swore i was going to learn how to kill this kid with one blow..lol..soon my little brothers freind saw me practicing my "deadly moves" one day in my backyard and told me about a master he had started studying with (master Atef Himaya) and I begged my parents to enroll me that week..they said fine as long as I got a job..so I started my first job as a paperboy..and soon was learning TAEKWONDO..and also was learning that "deadly moves" was not what the martial arts was about..and I havent stopped yet..22 years later I still have to meet bobby again an seek my vengance!!..lol..my high school reunion is coming up..maybe ill kick his ass then..lmao!!
  13. its the name of the game..sure sometimes we strive to have control ..but we are also not taking painting lessons or ballet!!..geting banged up once in a while comes with the territory..we are studying "fighting" jut work to defend more..if you get hit..well then hit back!!
  14. great article deby..and sad but true..can we ever get martial arts back to that?
  15. master rhee is one of the pioneers of taekwon do in america..a great master who ive had the pleasure of meeting on two ocasions.. http://www.aarp.org/mmaturity/jul_aug99/rhee.html
  16. every style has its good points so why argue that my style is the best. like little kids saying my dad can beat up your dad i have used the same phrase over and over here..and it is true the individual makes the art..one example you may have heard was that wing chun practictioners where made fun of ..called fairies or gay before bruce lee came on the secne..because it was invented by a woman..after witnessing what he developed with his art all the sudden everyone wanted to study wing chun..
  17. i dont know what hes trying to say either deby..the correct korean term is koryugi......sparring..kumite..whatever the term your school.. dojang..temple.dojo. etc...calls it.. theres an internatinal term thats understood no matter what style you practice..no matter if you are a martial artist or not.."fighting" can one fight? hold thier own? throw down? scrap..kick ass.. sparring and fighting are two different things alltogether...sparring is but another training tool to becoming a fighter..sparring has rules.. a format..tradition..do you know that 90% of the time if you get into a fight it will not be with a martial artist!! fighting does not..have any of these rules..guidelines traditions!! honor..respect..and being an exceptional sparring competitor or even a champion..does not mean you can fight!! and not everyone can be a fighter ..its an instinct..a talent that you can either have naturally or develop through martial arts practice..ive seen black belts who cant fight but have excellent technique and ive seen white belts with no technique but can fight well...sparring and fighting are closely related but by far not the same thing.. and sooooooooooooooo once again the debate as to which style vs another is a futile excercise..in opinion and ego..a martial arts pissing contest if you will...individual vs individual is another story ..talk and action are they the same?? i think not..who is more trainied in fighting the individual who is in an enviroment where fighting is an everyday thing..as in living in a bad neighborhood where he is forced to fight and survive daily or the "martial artist" who shows up two three times a week and practices "what it may be like" and thinks "nobody better mess with me" once again and im sick of being redundant the only person who can fight is the person who fights..just as the only person who can swim comfortably is the one who jumps in the deep end and swims.. _________________ Javier l Rosario bayshore new york instructor taekwondo/hapkido under master Atef s Himaya grandmaster Moon sung lee "whenever youre lazy enough not to train .someone, somewhere is training very hard to ki [ This Message was edited by: taezee on 2002-07-30 22:47 ] [ This Message was edited by: taezee on 2002-07-31 00:13 ] [ This Message was edited by: taezee on 2002-07-31 00:16 ]
  18. watching the taekwondo vs muy thai fight..first off there is an obvious mis match..the muy thai fighter is obviously seasoned while the taekwondo fighter even though wearing a red belt seems to be more of a yellow belt in his technique..i dont believe him to be at red belt level..and in seeing videos such as this one fight now everybodys going to be like "you see taekwon do cant do anything' do you really believe this individual represents a taekwondo fighter?? I think not..overall i found it entertaining..but a misrepresentation of taekwondo
  19. 5.6..12.would be nice but taking in to the fact that i like to shop and eat and have a place to live i gotta work for a living so if im lucky ill squeeze out two hours three or four times a week!!
  20. was that at the "shaken not stirred" dojang??
  21. yes a groin kick is devestating anyone with balls knows this!! and stance is important and form in attack and defense..however alot of what is practiced in form or kata is just a representation or excercise or even a form of shadow boxing ..real combat is another spectrum and we can only hope that our practiced skills can be incorperated into the actual fight..the only way one can develop fighting style is to fight..all the time..real fighting not prerehearsed not sport real drilling practice..not one two and three step sparring not countless hours perfecting my stances and hyung or kata..but actually getting in there and mixing it up especially with those who are more advanced..and my main point is that no matter what style you study..do you get in there and mix it up and improve..or do you stay on the side looking pretty doing your form and kata and hope it will work for you when you most need it?? ive said this before but the only way one can truly learn to swim is by jumping in the pool and wading through the water..not by standing on the edge of the pool and practicing how it may be>>for you may just drown when you need to use what you have learned..and that is the "reality factor" can i really fight?? or am i just a practioner who can do forms well?? who can tie a black belt perfectly.. in other words you can talk the talk but can you walk the walk?? ive heard many on this site and others say "well martial arts isnt about fighting but self improvment..achieving enlightment..the best martial artist is the one who can avoid or walk away from a fight! please..whats it all for then??yes martial arts does build character..discipline..self control..indomitable spirit ..its great for physical fitness..but its a fighting system we all practice!! to defend oneself and those you care for ..all that other blah blah are for those who question what martial arts are about or were created for..to prevent me from having my ass kicked period above all else..and this staement and you may quote me is truly "the reality factor" in any martial art anyone thinking otherwise .."the nile is a river in eygpt" as in denial!! any form of martial arts practiced should be questioned as will i be able to use this if i have to?? martial arts is not "i should be able to just walk away from any confrintation" such a myth and such a falicy..and i am not one who just started martial arts or just dabbled in it..ive been doing taekwon do for 25 years now and the reason i started was because i got my ass kicked 25 years ago and swore it wouldnt happen again!! it is a way of life for me.but at the same time i wont walk around quoting phrases from some chinese fortune cookie trying to sound like cain from kung fu.. and saying martial arts is not for fighting..you want to bring it..hey bring it..ill sleep better at night knowing i kicked youre teeth in then saying to myself i was the better man a good martial artist for walking away "reality factor" what it boils down to..what the real nitty gritty is..can i fight? is what im practicng going to make me be able to? and if not why am i practicing this?? _________________ Javier l Rosario bayshore new york instructor taekwondo/hapkido under master Atef s Himaya grandmaster Moon sung lee "whenever youre lazy enough not to train .someone, somewhere is training very hard to ki [ This Message was edited by: taezee on 2002-07-27 03:15 ] [ This Message was edited by: taezee on 2002-07-27 03:16 ] [ This Message was edited by: taezee on 2002-07-27 03:37 ] [ This Message was edited by: taezee on 2002-07-27 03:46 ] [ This Message was edited by: taezee on 2002-07-27 16:55 ] [ This Message was edited by: taezee on 2002-07-27 22:16 ]
  22. twist kick is actually a very common term used for this kick it is lbest described as doing a reverse roundhouse.. it takes alot of flexibility and practice to develop power in this kick and it doesnt work for everyone..it is a specialty kick..once develop it is very hard to see or defend against and is quite brutal
  23. i can actually picture you sitting there and thinking "wow how clever i will sound when i post this!!"
  24. your sighing and your rolling your eyes?? you know how many times i do that?/ everytime i come in here and a whole bunch of people who dont even study taekwon telling everyone what my art is about without ever even have taken one class..alot the things you had mentioned in your prior statement is practiced in traditional taekwon do..(not the sport which most of you may have seen) and as i have said in the past and continue to do so now is that olympic style taekwondo is but a small part of taekwondo and is not encompassed or truly represented by it and when i talk of traditional taekwondo im referring to the practice of real fighting not play tag under the guise of "full contact olympic style fighting" which is 50% kicking 50% clinching and hugging and waiting for a referee to pull them apart _________________ Javier l Rosario bayshore new york instructor taekwondo/hapkido under master Atef s Himaya grandmaster Moon sung lee "whenever youre lazy enough not to train .someone, somewhere is training very hard to ki [ This Message was edited by: taezee on 2002-07-26 17:25 ] [ This Message was edited by: taezee on 2002-07-26 22:28 ] [ This Message was edited by: taezee on 2002-07-26 22:39 ]
  25. thats very interesting..if they are learning so much at your dojo then why do they continue training in taekwon do??? and how are they going to learn hyung from a japanese instructor?? and as for the original topic of this thread "reality" as in an actual fight a proper stance has what relavence?? when was the last time you saw a fight where a practioner went into a deep horse stance or foward stance? dont generalize and say you Tkd guys because it realy show your lack of experience or knowledge and im not trying to be disrespectful just stating what i know and what my experience has been..do you realy beleive that having perfect kata or form will make you a much more formidable fighter in the street..that if my cat stance is perfect or my backstance?? id much rather drill in actuall self defense drills..arm locks joint locks..hand strikes..throws..sparring (combat sparring not olympic style) these are what i would be using in a real fight..not really worrying about wether my hand has been drawn back properly or if the weight distribution of my back stance .front or otherwise is correct..and another fact is our forms consist of hand strikes and blocks more then kicks..but all we do is kick high and leave ourselves open..and dont use our hands..and we are very easy to defeat all us "tkd guys".. _________________ Javier l Rosario bayshore new york instructor taekwondo/hapkido under master Atef s Himaya grandmaster Moon sung lee "whenever youre lazy enough not to train .someone, somewhere is training very hard to ki [ This Message was edited by: taezee on 2002-07-26 17:32 ] [ This Message was edited by: taezee on 2002-07-26 22:34 ]
