a belt or rank has meaning only if the person wearing it is for real...as long as you know you worked hard for your rank and no one gave you anything..you sacraficed with time ..blood..sweat..tears..injuries..when you have gone through this it is much more of a satisfaction then standing in the mirror admiring the color of the belt you are wearing and the character you have built along the way is something no one can ever take away form you -
well let me give you the textbook answer first...It improves me as an individual..it gives me confidence and strength and discipline..i am at one with myself and am proud to be a martial artist it completes me...ALLRIGHT enough of that..I love fighting..I love kicking people in the head...i love breaking things with my hands..i especially love the bound i have with the people who i kick in the head my fellow instructors and students I love them all

mikeod..i was about to say you need a new quote..lol yes it is a disgrace but it happens along with alot of other things...good luck on your exam..let us know how it went -
the main advatage of breaking is as rush said the challange but also here you can really go all out on a technigue and not worry about killing your sparring partner....you also need to develop a high level of speed and focus.these two are even more important than the toughening up of your striking area (knuckels for example) as a matter of fact if you are not training properly you can really hurt yourself(broken knuckles>>nerve damage..carpatunel)yes the objects are inanimate so what!! its a tough challenge and as for self defense ken i have to re emphasis you dont want to get hit with this type of force obviously boards dont hit back but bones break easily... its just a form of aerobic excercise using some taekwondo moves (same could be said for alot of taekwondo schools) it is a good work out and its fun as for billy blanks for those of you who dont know.. the boy is bad ive seen him in person several times he can fight and he has won many chamionships.. stop player hatin..he was well known before taebo as one of the top US competitors.especially during the eighties through the early ninties ... for people thinking they can handle thier own after taking these classes there are also the martial artist in the mcdojangs of america who have the same false sense of security.

yes its kind of a paradox..some parents know that they have kids that are out of control so they bring them to me to teach discipline...now what can i do? one week your telling me to discipline your kid and the next your telling me im too hard and the next im talking to your lawyer.its ridiculous..parents need to take resposibilties at home to bring thier kids up with discipline not to let them walk all over them, then wonder what to do when they are teenagers who laugh at them when they tell them to do something or worse..i had one girl slap her mother when her mother bought her in to speak with me about her behavior at school...my first instinct was to choke her..all i could do was explain to her how wrong her actions where but at this point are my words really going to change what shes been getting away with all her life?its a serious problem in society today..and im not even talking about all these kids youve got running around with guns in school..or taking drugs or getting pregant..all these things have become so common that were not even shocked anymore..but let me lay the back of my hand on a kid who really needs it and im off to jail..parents too.kid makes one call to child protective service and they dont even want to hear what the parents have to say..they will come in take the kid out and now they are under investigation..whats this world coming to?

actually taekwondo is both linear and circular its what distinguishes taekwondo from other styles of karate...in its practical form it has alot of trapping techniques also hapkido they are very similar however hapkido is more of korean style of jiujitsu.

yes that is true the only areas allowed to strike are the entire foot and only reverse punch with the fist and at that only to the midsection of the body -
hey deby, nice to hear from you...I hear what youre saying..now people assume because your korean your great in taekwondo and that you are a ligitamate master....some of the biggest crooks i know are korean "masters"... 200.00 a month? who would pay that?and as for discipline..people think that it is necessary to have a military type atmosphere to achieve discipline..that beatings and yelling down on students and intimidation will bring about discipline...i have parents request the same of me..and truthfully this was the way i was trained...but times have changed...youre more likely to lose students training this way . I feel now you can acomplish discipline without making the student feel like they are in a p.o.w. camp..just by following the traditonal dojang rules and tennets will give the student a sense of being or identity which are important in instilling discipline..nowadays punishment for breaking rules in class are more of a physical thing such as pushups..sprints e.t.c. when i was coming up..you got whipped hard with a bamboo stick..and im not talking about a little tap im talking you would hear the stick cutting the air with a big whoosh a then SMACK!! some nights i would leave the dojang with welts and not be able to sit for a few days..i got it alot because i was always the class clown..even my instructor would be laughing while whipping me for things i did in class..back then we just accepted it it was part of the training..today try that and see how fast a lawyer comes to your dojang with a lawsuit. so we had to adjust over the years...I recall one incident in which all week long i was hurting people sparring..i would not hold back..just pow one after one..i was a red belt then..and my master(atef himaya) kept yelling at me to control..but i kept on..so on the last night as i was getting changed to leave..everyone else had already left..as i was heading for the door he came out of his office with the key and locked the door..he then turned to me and said you like full contact? im going to show you full contact..he then proceeded to give me the worst beating of my life..for about 20 minutes all i did was get bounced around the dojang like a handball..when it was over i had lumps ,bruises,i was bleeding from my mouth and nose and could barely walk out to my car..you may say wow that guy was crazy..but ill tell you what after that night i developed the best controlled kicking that school has ever seen..the next demonstration we had i was kicking cigarretes out of multiple peoples mouths..just thought id share that but im getting off the point things are alot more complex today then back then

had alot of fun rush..sorry but i was a little too far north of you otherwise i would have stopped by to hang with you...it just went so fast it was incredible...

is a taekwondo roundhouse effective? does it hurt?..i dont know does the pope pray? a roundhouse kick in any form of martial art is one of the fastest..hard hitting kicks available in a martial artist arsenal,,for you guys to stay here arguing about who throws it the best is pointless well be here all month....it would be very easy for me to join in and say hey taekwondo!! who throws kicks better than us..thats our forte!!! it comes down to the induividual...i know taekwondo stylist who will behead you with a rounhouse before you knew what happened..i also know kickboxers and muay tai guys who will do the same...everybody has thier way even guys who study in the same school much less the same style..if you have all your factors together..speed (being the most important factor in any kick) hip rotation(for follow through) coordination (for targeting)footwork (for closing the gap) if you can put these together in sync..who cares what style you practice..it gets the same result..someones going to be hurting..and we all bleed the same color and we all have the same bones that can be broken...and if you were able to develop a front kick in the same manner than you will get the same result..dont sleep on the front kick..many people forget about it once they start advancing in the ranks..this too is one of the more practical and deadly..more likely to land then a nice 360 jumping wheel kick any day...

Question

try HERE!!!or taekwon.net -
right now i just teach at two different dojangs which my friends own..im saving money and considering opening my own..i plan to have a format that will go back to the more basic and practical taekwondo not the watered down sport version which is now prevalent in the U.S. im am appalled at the state of taekwondo today..if we dont do a 360 turn its going to evaporate into some tag game rather than a martial art. the olympics were supposed to make us great but in my opinion it has done the oppisite..the majority of schools now train about 70% for competition rather than actual combat ..combine that with the fast promotion rate(average about 2 years training now for 1st dan) our foundation is crumbling....i feel it is our responsibility to reinstate the more traditional training..we are the current generation..and what do we have to pass on??I would have a school where actual accomplishment would determine the students next promotion..and not the amount of times a week the student shows for class,,and not for the 40 dollars i would get for the test...i would stress respect and discipline and you can check your ego at the front door..and you will be a real fighter not some idiot who has 40 medals from various tornaments but cant even throw a punch correctly...or cannot preform 50 push ups...the kind of school im suggesting probably would close its doors within the first month becuase of the spoiled crybaby..give me my belt now mentality which is out there today...we are not patient..disciplined enough to train hard core..for reality..but would rather look cool with a couple of flashy kicks and a black belt..my school would be the oppisite of all that....in the name of making money alot of instructors have submitted to the american fast tract and sacrificed taekwondo,,,,the motto for my school would be "dont ask me when youre next test is...you will know when you are ready"

the "chest protecters" or hogu in korean is just for keeping score it really offers very little protection its basically a thin peice of canvas or leather with a thin foam on the inside...so you do feel those kicks..the older hogus had the dots some companies still make them but for official events its basically the red or blue stripe and this is the scoring or target area..as for the head gear the same thing not much protection it is a thin foam material and is actually worn to avoid further injury when a competitor is knocked out..preventing him/her from cracking thier skull open on the gym floor..(i actually witnessed this happen to a guy in the days before head gear was mandatory)official events now require a mat surface ring similar to those used in wrestling macthes...groin cup..mouthpiece..shin..and elbow guards are now mandatory equipment... -

he died in july 1973 just before the release of the worlds greatest martial art movie ever made..he did not live to see his dream...it was to be his breakout into the american mainstream ..game of death was actually started before dragon..it was terribly spliced together later with footage from his other pictures and a stand in actor who looked nothing like him..then followed by an awful overdub...coincidently 20 years later his son also died unexpectantly also during his breakout film and having also to have others finish the film..however by this time the special effects we have available made that a smooth process its almost impossible to tell what sences are him and what sences are computer generated..pretty creepy uh?(the curse mabye)
