In Defence of McDojos
obiwansbane replied to Dazed and Confused's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
It makes one wonder though... with SO many mcdojo's out there... how many kids have gone out confident in their ability to protect themselves, only get stomped on due to lack of proper training? its a sad situation in my eyes... Of course without mcdojo's who would i have in my black belt division to make me feel good about myself? people who actually can compete.. then i lose thats no fun at all! -
What do you consider are 3 undeniable Ninja truths ?
obiwansbane replied to KL70's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
You're so sneaky that people don't even realise you're wearing your black ninja suit in public, all they see are normal clothes... You can kill people by blinking You know that the ask a ninja guy is someone you DON'T ever mess with... -
Ever been asked "Show me what you've got?"
obiwansbane replied to smckeown's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
yes ive been asked that, i usually just laugh it off then go into a hugely exagerated stance while making similar noises to the guy playing bruce lee in "Dragon" -
Sparring techniques for opening up / confusing your opponent
obiwansbane replied to NeilT's topic in Karate
i dont know what belt you are... but i can personally say that if you try that in the brown or black belt division you will most likely get crushed... one thing that works outright everytime is taunting.... If you are confidant in your ability to score, open yourself up and flash targets to your opponent, soon they will get mad and throw a spastic attack in hopes of hitting one of your open spots... simply close the spot and counter attack. works like a charm -
Training with girls, breasts in the way.
obiwansbane replied to dippedappe's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
the girls who were well endowed at my school used to wear chest protectors, seemed to do the trick seeing as when i went to hit them in the solar plexus i felt my hand get owned by hitting something that solid when i wasnt expecting it -

Student "busted" back to white belt
obiwansbane replied to pegasi's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Keyword SHOULD i know tons of students who have made it without practising a day in their lives... i don't know how they do it (they obviously dont get their blacks but they get high up) but if you really wanted to get down to it you could find a bazillion flaws in their technique.. and as for the repetition.. yes it is.. once you're demoted your instructor won't grade you on skill anymore... he will grade you on, time spent training, respect shown in dojo.. etc.. The embarrasment and loss of respect from your instructor is a harsh punishment for someone who is passionate about the martial arts (some people just dont know how to act, you can be passionate and break rules) They will push themselves to climb back to their original rank in hopes of keeping their dignity. -
Student "busted" back to white belt
obiwansbane replied to pegasi's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
our instructor has a similar thing, except his is about if you use your martial arts to initiate fights... If he finds out that you have been fighting people because of your martial arts (not in self defence, but just picking fights) he will instantly bring you back to white belt, you can do that or quit... It happened to two of the Brown belts... barely a week from their blackbelt test they were demoted back to white... they left the dojo, but i heard the might be coming back (after being gone for about 7 or 8 years) -
bushido got it... easiest way to overcome it? have someone hit you, and keep hitting you (not in the face and not till you bleed etc duh) till it starts to just simply not matter if you get hit, you will continue going forward with your attack once uve been hit a good couple times you wont ever be too scared to move in.. for sparrin at least

Level 11 Master of Almightiness
obiwansbane replied to marie curie's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
it made me giggle a little -
judges are actually encouraged to move but just on the edges bottom left judge is urged to shuffle between |_ to get the best views at all time, and top right is urged to shuffle --| to get the best view. If there are five judges however, basically everything is covered... having 5 bad judges is possibly the worse sparring situation in the world, it makes you just want to give up the fight and walk off

He has a school. He just doesn't have the brains to ask the instructor who specializes in the katana for a private lesson Come on man hop to it, shawn's waiting! As for grip, its proper to have right over left, and that is more than likely the first thing he will try to correct you on, but if it is more comfortable to use your left hand on top i guess comfort wins, because not everyone is the same. But yah, asking shawn or shihan for drills would be alot more useful than random people who cant see what you can already do for advice on how to progress.

Post Test "Fun" Period
obiwansbane replied to Chuilli, Kyo Sah Nim's topic in Instructors and School Owners
and another thing to go with this, if you have a soft floor, (you don't want ppl getting hurt to badly) playing bowling for little kids. have the black belts play a game of pin bowling using the students as pins.. but the students are allowed to move out of the way of the ball... they usually have a blast playing this.. and its not to often you get to throw a giant ball at a kid so the black belts have fun too -
Hey guys, ive been looking around the net and havn't really come across too much in terms of instruction in regards to twirls on the bo staff... Like i can do the figure 8, behind the back, over the head... but im thinking about the tournament kind of twirls, like backwards figure 8's and some of the stuff you can find on youtube. If you can't find anything could one of you make a vid with yourself just goin through the motions slowly thatd be a huge help. Thnx obi

best thing to do in your situation... not care... You are a white belt and cannot by any means be expected to beat any of your competitors... if you do its great, if you don't no1 expected you to... just go to this tournament with a keen eye and try and learn from the other people in your division... cause they have been competing alot longer than you have so if you watch what they do you will pick up some great pointers.

nice, we have different timings to yours, but yours looked solid and i woulda scored it high ^_^ well from what i saw in the video at least good job and keep it up

my guess is that they expect most street fighters to end up swinging hooks and stuff. Some people also see deep backstances as a joke so they'll be loose and not really paying attention to you, but more to laughin at whoevers nearby to laugh with them... with that you use the 70% of weight on your backleg and launch yourself forward releasing a devastating strike while ure going.. thats just my guess... personally i fight like bushido..

i love sparring and how much POTENTIAL it has to teach you... but i hate how dulled down its become... I watch old videos of my instructors divisions when he was around 25 and you saw them point sparring at a tournament... They would be able to apply those skills to a real fight.... im just scared that seeing as i've never been in a REAL fight (few scuffles dont count) i will start pulling punches and throwing love tap round house kicks to the side of the head, ending up with me on the ground bleeding....

Do you ever feel like *you* are *that* kind of student?
obiwansbane replied to DisgruntledGirl's topic in Karate
This can lead to unfortunate circumstances. When an instructor tells you that you should do so-and-so if the opponent does so-and-so, and that is the way you train it, with no questions asked, and then, when the time comes, it doesn't work for you, what happened? Was it because you didn't do it right? Or was it because what works so well for one person doesn't work the same for another? As an instructor, it is important to be able to work with variations of things with the students, in order for them to find out what works for their particular body type and ability/skill level. Therefore, it is important for students to ask questions now and again, and they should feel comfortable doing so. Even if it comes out in an arguementative tone (which, hopefully, wouldn't happen often) it should still be addressed. I know that students can get frustrated at times; I get that way, too. It is all part of the learning process. However, don't forget that their is more than one process to learning. thats perfectly fine bushido, what i meant was, when you get the one student, who tries it once, cant do it, and then whines about how it will never work in real life. Most defence techniques do, seeing as your attacker picked you cause you looked weak, so he didnt expect you to be able to defend yourself, you have the element of surprise... and that helps in breaking alot of holds by itself.
