Uppercuts
Northren Ogre replied to Username's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
Yeah, there are bags that hang Horizontally that are designed for uppercuts. Focus mitt drills are good for practice, as previously mentioned -
Synaesthesia stated - "Professional western soliders who have never been in a gun battle can annihilate hardened gurrillas who have been raised on bloodshed. Colonol Grossman calls this something to the effect of "de-facto vetrans". Is this why the French and American soldiers did so well in Vietnam?? Simulation can only take you so far, experience counts for a lot.

I had a problem once throwing out a coked up patron when I used to bounce. He got ahold of my throat and had me lifted up off the ground(he would have had to come the night I was on by myself). I rained elbows and punches to this guys head, to no avail. A good kick in the groin had no effect. This guy was wired up. My last resort was to sick a thumb in each of his eyes, and hard! Now that got his attention and he let go of me. Now the scrap outside went a little better, but there are times when you have to resort to tactics like this.

The reason he "escaped" the drugs and other problems is because his trainer Cus D'Amato saw talent and took him out of that environment and moved him to the Catskills in upstate New York. The only reason that he stayed out of serious trouble that long was because of his devotion to D'Amato, and his longtime manager Jim Jacobs, and the sense of stability they provided to him. When Cus D'Amato died, followed shortly by Jim Jacobs, Tyson's slide into the circus that has become his life started. To suggest that Tyson had the moral courage or mental fortitude to rise from his ghetto existance on his own is laughable.

Most of Tyson's opponents on his rise were either no names, or over the hill ex champs. Michael Spinks was "supposed" to wipe the floor with Tyson, but was way past his prime. The only quality(IMO) opponent Tyson faced and beat was Razor Ruddick. Sure one can make the claim that his prime was missed due to his incarceration, but I don't think he would have stood up as the better heavyweights like Lewis and Holyfield were making their mark. Lucky got it right with Tyson being a one trick pony with a hard punch.

Wow, a blast from the past. -
Well, the point could be made that De La Hoya hasn't done well in the past few years due to coming up in weight and an inability to deal with the power that the naturally heavier boxers have. Also De La Hoya is no longer the spring chicken he used to be. In all athletes careers comes a point where the body will not be able to do what it once could. Oscar has hit that point and is on the downside of a fantastic career. It will be interesting to see how long he remains in the game after Hopkins gets a hold of him. I hope he dosen't make the same mistakes as many fighters do ie. Evander Holyfield.

Fun stuff San Shou. I train, instruct and compete in San Shou. It is similar to Muay Thai, but with emphasis on throws, rather than clinching. Most tournaments do not allow knee or elbow attacks, even though they are San Shou techniques. Some are starting to allow knee strikes in amatuer competitions. http://sanshou.com -
A job.

You have to have Quick time to see this.

Too true...too true

Technique can get thrown out the window when things get down and dirty though. You can throw proper punches, but when the person you're fighting moves thier head (much unlike a heavy bag...stupid non-moving bags) you can wind up smacking very hard parts, doing damage to yourself. I have broken my right hand in a fight, but I had found myself in a bad situation where I was involved in a few fights in less than 24 hours.

I think I know what you are talking about, and there is a thread somewhere below about leg stretchers. The one you are talking about does work, as I have used one of them in the past...cheap and effective...Excellent peice of gear.

All depends on the fighter...Cung Le likes to throw and he seems to be the basis of most peoples opinions. I on the other hand like to strike, as did my instructor( Iron Arahat for any who remember him from the forums). This was reflected in the style of fights we had at competitions where we gained a reputation for stand up strikers, and others would adjust for this. I hate hit and runners....and throwers for that matter...they rub their sweat on me.

I train and teach San Shou in a San Shou specific facility and would argue that is is more like Muay Thai than most like to think. More and more venues are allowing knee strikes. A majority of the techniques cross over nicely and knee and elbow strikes are taught, but not allowed in a majority of events. San Shou will be a demonstration sport at the 2008 Bejing Olympics(Or So I've heard.)

Feedback on Website

Your website is very well done. I like that you show techniques on your site, a lot of sites out there do not. I have registered, while not being a true student of BJJ(more of a dabbler), but looking at your site has refreshed things I had forgotten. -

Another good one is to take the top off the toilet and take the hose that refills the tank. Place the hose on the outside of the tank and aim it about the middle of tank. Gently place the toilet lid back on, taking care not to squeeze the hose shut. Get the h ell out of there. When the next person(victim) comes along to use the toilet and flushes.....TaDa..WET CROTCH!!!! Me and toilets.....the fun never stops
