  1. Haha, they are pretty true! Or how about, - the time you are asked to demostrate your best technique is class you fall on your face:lol:
  2. Hm... I love snow.. but that's not really something I do. Oh, I go to church for three hours there's one! I also go to karate and get bruises and love it Some people do believe I am crazy.
  3. Mine too! I think that's pretty great. While my sensei does not do anything like that he will show us and talk about practical/street defense and different things like that. In the higher rank classes we work on more self defense things such as holds, grappling. In one class we all had to feel what it was like to be choked. Very good classes those are.
  4. I think if you know what your limitations are it will help. I was thinking about this the other day when trying on my grad dress. It is pretty tight so I would have a hard time throwing a fully extended punch. My legs however, are free to move and would be hidden by the dress. I could easly throw a low kick or move in close and throw a short punch. Since I know this, if perchance I need to fight, it won't be too much of a problem because I know the limitations. Practice on a heavy bag, or just on air in street clothes and see what works and what doesn't. To me that's part of ma. In the jeans you might want to stick to punches and with the dress pants, knock them out with a kick and then pick up your things Just be aware of the limitations of your clothes and work with it.
  5. I've never heard. I know a couple police officers and I'll try to remember to ask them. That's interesting. I personally don't see the difference, but I'm not the law. As for roundhouse kicks, I think it's been covered, they would be more useful low, as in to the knee area than head hight in the streets but they aren't completely useless - at least I hope not, I have a good strong roundhouse (though I usually throw high)
  6. I was doing heian shodan, a white belt kata a few weeks ago and completely messed it up. I don't know why, I guess my mind wandered or soemthing. Luckily, when I looked around, I found that everyone else (all brown or black belts) had messed up as well. I didn't feel quite so bad then Another time I was sparring with a new white belt. Well not sparring but shoulder touching. Instead of sparring you try to touch the other person's shoulders without letting them touch yours. I was having fun with the new belt, sliding backwards and to the side, just having fun with them. Suddenly, I wasn't slidng backwards, but falling backwards. I landed on my back. The white belt hadn't even touched me! Sensei came over and congradulated the bewildered newbie on downing me
  7. Sometimes I think I am good at other times I really see how much of a beginner I am. I know I am better than I was. I am starting to get my hips in time, but that still isnt' coming. I usually strive to work up to the level of one of the black belts in the dojo. I find that I am making the same mistakes that I remember some of the now black or brown belts making when they were close to my rank. It's good to know I'm following in their footsteps I am pretty good at sparring but I often lose hip connection in kata and basics. I seem to fight better on instinct, like when I'm sparring than by thought. Maybe that's why I have trouble with kata. I know there's a lot I need to work on before I think of myself as good, but looking at how far I've come I can say that I am good. So, to answer the question, I am good but I'll never be good enough. I'll always want to be better.
  8. I love sparring. I always have liked it but now I also have an appreciation for basics. For me sparring is a chance to test myself against others and I always try to see how I can be better. One thing I like is that at my belt level and up, my Sensei allows a bit more contact. Not full contact but enough to get bruises and know what it's like to be hit.
  9. When I'm training at home I usually wear a t-shirt and sweats but sometimes I'll do 15-20 minutes of training in whatever I'm wearing that day - usually jeans. I really need to train in heels but I don't like shoes When I try on shoes though I always throw a few kicks, especially in heels to make sure I can.
  10. Thanks for the advice. I know the best approach is to ask Sensei, however, with easter holidays I haven't had a chance to be at the dojo in a while and wanted to try and improve this asap. I am planning on asking him for additional advice the next time I go to the dojo.
  11. Thank you for being honest here, but I find your logic flawed. The person(s) who are sick are the ones passing illnesses around, no matter how old they are.[snip] I know. My point was that kids get sick more often due to close associations at school. Yes, anyone can carry a virus as well as the next person. I just meant they are exposed to more and especially the jrs in my dojo are always sick, so I don't feel as guilty if others get sick
  12. Wow, it's been a while since I have posted, I've been busy. Anyways, I am having a bit of trouble getting my hips working right. With my left foot foreward punching with my right hand I don't have much trouble. I can whip my hip/hand around alright - though my timing is still a tad off But with my right foot foreward punching with my left hand I can't get my hip to whip around the same way. It just doesn't want to move like that and I usually end up turning my whole leg and hurting my knee. I dont' know why I can't get the same whip. I know my right side is better than my left but this is quite a bit difference! How can I make my left hip turn more? I have a grading coming up and hip rotation (and punches) is one of the things I'm worried about. Any thoughts?
  13. I do bounce a bit, but I'm trying to cut down on it. Most of the fighters in my dojo are bouncers. The new guy isn't and fighting him sure is different! I'd say he's the best fighter, bar sensei and maybe one other guy, in the dojo. And he never bounces.
  14. I think I agree with what he said. If someone's taking martial arts and is sparring, they can expect to get hit sometimes. I've gotten hit in the chest more than once. I just shrug it off. It wasn't intentional. I can see why you would do this, espcially to the more "soft" women who might join ma. But, shouldn't this be done to anyone who's just started. I try not to go all out on a new martial artist.
  15. I would stop if someone said yame because I am used to it from sparring at the dojo. If someone said stop I might hesitate for a second. I might ask someone to yell it out the next time I'm sparring to see what I would do.
  16. What others have said. I'm a big lover of bare feet and as soon as the snow's gone, so are my shoes I've never had a problem with soft feet, mine are probably too hard if anything! Walk around barefoot, and train barefoot and it will come with time.
  17. I know you all will jump on me for it, but I often train sick - at the dojo. But, in my defense with ~30 little kids, it's not likely that I am the one passing on the numerous colds, flus and who-knows-what's that go around the dojo. I find training, while drains me, stimulates my body to heal quicker. I don't know why, but it does help. I also can't stand missing class (I miss enough with work as it is!)
  18. Spray paint your old white belt black? Sorry, I actually have no idea. Are the tariffs on imports inside europe reasonable? I'm sure there are online stores that will sell black belts, but I'm afraid I don't know where. I'm sure someone from Europe can give you more help than I can.
  19. Ours is $45 (Canadian) a month but if your having financial issues or can't make it to two classes a week, Sensei will change your payment. Compared to other schools and to different sports, it's pretty cheep. how much US$ is a euro worth?
  20. Good advice from the others here! I do agree that you need variety in who your sparring. Most of the fighters in my club fight one way. A new guy just transfered into the club and fights very different from the rest of us! I love fighting him, even though I only have a few times. His style is so different and a challenge! So I'd try to find others to spar with so that you can get variety in how you fight.
  21. When you nearly elbow your bf in the solar plexus and knock him senseless when he puts his arms around you. or your automatically assume he's an attack.
  22. Lol tef. We had a good one tonight. Friday's are sparring night so we spent the majority of class fighting. During the last match between two young kids white and yellow belt the white belt stops in the middle of the fight and waves his hand in the air. Senpai called yame (stop) and then asked him what he needed. In a shy little voice he said "Can I go to the bathroom?" before running off in that direction. We were all killing ourselves laughing. Poor kid!
  23. I wake up by an alarm on school days but otherwise it's usually on my own but always before 10am.
  24. I wouldn't be the one to ask for two reasons. One because I'm a girl (I'm assuming your a guy sorry if I'm wrong) and two because I haven't grown since I was 14 - 17, soon to be 18 now. I'm only 4'11 (and 1/2 ) so 5'9 doesn't sound bad. But you might, or at least fill out as they said above.
