BJJ in a real fight
straightblast replied to AceKing's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
I would say do not go to the ground, you may be lucky with some judo throws as long as they land on there neck/head a fire hydrant or oncomming traffic. -
you can say it however you like, but in the end a front kick is still a front kick and pain is the international language that we all know.

Work on combos, they may see the first 2 techniques but it could be the 3,4,5 that get them. Take the techniques that you like or are good at and create your own. For instance I like to do a front kick, jab, cross, inside round kick, kinda like low, high, high, low it keeps them guessing.

I believe that Most people on the street will not be expecting a loud Kiai, I have found that it works good in class but never have the unfortunate pleasure of doing it outside of class. I do not do it much but I get the flinch response needed to enter and I only do it when the opponent is breathing in.

Do we agree that no individual is perfect. Lets say there is a perfect individual, then what ever art he does will be perfect. The perfect individual would perform the art with no flaw within its bounds with perfect technique, speed, strength, timming and so on.

I believe that all styles are perfect, its the human who is not.

Odds are we are not going to be in bare feet if we ever have to kick for self defense. The type of boot/shoe that I may be wearing will dictate what part of the foot I am kicking with. If I am in my cowboy boots , I may use the toe as well if I have my work boots on wich are steel toed.

Blocking and parrying in combat
straightblast replied to dippedappe's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
The block for me is to passive, I would use it maybe in a surprise attack. I rather intercept or use a destruction. I use the parry more often and trapping if my attack is blocked or the path is obstructed. I have found that the traditional karate block works best when I use them as a strike instead to the body, neck, back, groin..etc instead of the typical block to a punch. -

Traditional Shotokan Striking in UFC
straightblast replied to juey palancu's topic in Pro Fighting Matches and Leagues
I work out with some people that have now power in their punches, what good is the technique if it just lands on me and does nothing. There is more to a technique for it to just land on a target. The purpose should be to generate power, get your mass behind it not to stand in place and swing wildly. -
Traditional Shotokan Striking in UFC
straightblast replied to juey palancu's topic in Pro Fighting Matches and Leagues
Before you learned how to punch, a punch was just a punch. You make a fist and swing at someone. Then you learned all the mechanics involved and intricate detail , the punch was no longer just a punch, it was complex. As you train the punch it became natural a part of you, basic. Finally a punch was again just a punch. -
I think budo has nothing to do with MMA. It is a sporting event like boxing, soccer, basketball etc. There has been and always will be trash talking in sports as well as rivalrys. Some people do hate each other in MMA but the same can be said of all sports. As far as sportsmanship, it is everywhere, most fighters respect each other, even after the events they hug. I see the trash talking as a way to try and get yourself pumped up and put a little doubt in your opponent, a tiny advantage will help. Most of it is just hype. Your main goal is to knock out or submit your opponent.

Do not stand there and go toe to toe with him, we will see how he does against Ray Mercer. -
What belt are you??
straightblast replied to karatekid1975's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
If you could go back in time and ask Matsurma, Itoso or Azato what belt level they were at. Might get a dumbfounded look. -
I would use a conbat slap in the first stage of a selfdefense situation, it can be quite a shock to the system plus has great knock out power. One thing to consider is that if the fist hits the mouth and breaks your skin you are going to get a nasty infection where your fist will swell up. Below is a link the slap. The target is the ear and for knockout, the fleshy part of the palm to the jaw. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PR97yKSiUSg

breaking wrist grabs
straightblast replied to little kicker's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
I like to start everything off with a distraction, be it a finger flick to the eyes, spear hand to the throat or a quick kick to the groin heck even an unexpected very loud kiai, to give you a moment of flinch response to use a wrist escape -
I would like to add that when you duck and weave the right gross, you do a step drag with your left leg towards 10 oclock as you do that move you are hitting with an overhand right to the face. twist the hips into your left hand body shot , then with the left hook I pivit my right leg around so that i end up faceing the side of the person. I have praticed just the evading part of this from a fully commited hay maker and the opponent tends to land on top, so I added the step drag and pivot for if anything else I get out of the way and can attack from the side and back.

I am a green belt in shotokan but I love to blend it with kenpo. The shotokan power and kenpo speed has opened my eyes to things I have not thought of before.
-
partner throws a jab, you parry it to the inside, he then throws a cross that you duck and weave to your left as you throw a right, left to body then left hook to head. you and partner plant front foot next to eachother and can not move the fron feet. one person throws and you evade. these two are some of our warm up.
