You may also ask around and find people or coworkers who take martial arts to show you and give you tips. I am always amazed by how many of my co workers have been in or are in martial arts, it’s not written on their forehead but if you ask around you might find someone. I also suggest practice as much with shoes on, the odds are you will be in shoes and street cloths if you ever need to use your skills. Pants and shoes does change a few things. Regards

Knife hand block.
straightblast replied to Martial Walrus's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I don't like the term "block". we are really striking the incoming limb. I either strike the attack with a shuto or parry the attack and strike the neck. Take the rising block for example, think of using it as a jab, quickly rising and striking the undside the the arm then returning. Can be very painful for the attacker. I have stopped using the blocks as in the traditional way of locking the block out and use them as you would a strike or kick. Regards -
Bruce Lee may not have earned a black belt but he did have formal training in WC and trained with many black blets, most of his students were ranked in some martial art. This so called BB sounds like he worked by himself for 3 years and from the sound of it put his BB on prior to teaching himself. At first it is stated that there is no other school in the area but 3 years later BB's and instructors were all all over the place. I myself do not have a BB nor will I but I do have 3 years of shotokan, 1 year kempo and less time in other arts and currenty working with my son who is enrolled in Doce Pares. I find it rather easy to learn from DVD's, books and even observing my son's class, however you need training partners. I would never give myself a BB or claim but that does not mean I can not teach self defense to others.

Lion's Den Fighter in Knife Fight

bushido_man96 brought up a good point about ego. useing ego as an advantage. If a person feels superior, they tend to leave themselves wide open. Mezger was lucky, I am glad it turned out the way it did and no serious injury. -
If every attempt at escape has failed, your not done yet. A person is not going to stand there all night with you in a bear hug. Remember both his arms are tied up to, he will have to make a move and that might be your chance to get out. If he has friends, try to use your legs to keep them at bay but at sometime is grip will loosen and be ready for it.

Back in the day when I did shotokan, the kids who played around spend all class in the corner doing push ups. They either did push ups for days and learned their lesson or droped out of class.

I like to trap hard, try to unbalance the opponent. For me it works best to trap to open the path or when a srike is blocked to re open the line for a quick strike along the same path. Trapping is used all over in grappling arts.

I guess it really depends on what kind of shoe I am wearing at the time but for me when i pratice barefoot, I kick with the ball, I can bend my toes way back and I have tried top of foot and it is very painful especially when caught with an elbow. I never really got why we do it barefoot when in real life you will have shoes on, unless your training to compete, in which I dont. I wear my work shoes 95% of the time and they are steel toe so in that case, I will be kicking with my toe. Regards

Muscle Gain or Fat Loss for a Martial Artist
straightblast replied to jsteczko's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I will try to answer the origional post from my experiance. I was obese, so my main goal was fat loss, not musscle gain. I lost 70 pounds over the last 5 months, Am I faster? "yes" I am now working on building lean flexable musscle,Will I get even faster?"yes" If I stayed obese and gained musscle I probably would be a little fast but not like I am now. -

My pont was that smaller fighters are typically faster than larger ones. Nothing wrong with building musscle mass, I encourage it but make sure you stay lean and flexable or it will slow you down. I personally am more into working on core strength and body weight exercise. When I think of speed, I think wide reciever type of body. Bruce Lee was crazy fast but he did say that there were lots of guys faster than him, he had a unique ability with his timming. Although he lifted weights for strength it was also because he was a movie star and knew that he must look a certain way in front of the camera. Regards. -
Hi, I am looking for everyones view on TKD as self defense and what orginizations are more geared towards it rather than Olympic type sparring. Regards

Joe Lewis may not have been slow but Bruce lee was faster. I personally would concentrate on weight loss and at the same time do body weight exercise to reduce the amout of musscle loss. If your going to loose weight its not just fat. I would work on core strength over anything. Your core is the base foundation. -
Bushido_man, I would agree with you if this had been a "Gracie Challenge" but it was not. It was a typical MMA event on TV with sanctioned rules. If I remember right both Gracie and Shamrock were coaches , so they both knew the rules well.

From watching him tonight it looks like all it takes is a short right from a LHW to take him out. -
How to fight larger opponents
straightblast replied to Throwdown0850's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I would rather be mobile than on the ground, if this was a street encounter. You do not know your opponent, you might end up with a knife in your side. Try rolling with a training blade. -
My old instructor used a an upward ridge hand up into the groin from an attack out side a bar. He was grabbed from behind on the shoulder and he spun around low because he was expecting the punch and slammed the ridge hand up into the groin. followed by a down elbow to the back of the neck.

Most Damaging Single Technique
straightblast replied to Johnlogic121's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Considering that I wear steel toe boots every day for my job, Any kick landed would do some pretty good damage. -

To just go for the mount will get you kicked in the face if you do not know how to get past the legs. -
A guy beat me right handed but lost to me left handed, Who is the winner?

Frank also has no ACL, it puts a damper on his shoot. The side kicks from le look pretty painful to me, if anything good stop kicks.
