Being attacked with a katana, what would you do?
masterintraining replied to Myth's topic in Martial Arts Weapons
i agree with how whatbasicly every1 else has listed. first i would of course try to run but u already said that it does not count so, i would try to give or do as he asked but if he was trying to just kill me, or if i had to protect someone, id choose to try and arm myself with what ever i could find, if not that i whould try to dstract him and attack. 2.) i would try to go to the ground or sweep him or other leg attacks to first crumble his stance, or get him to ground then i would try and disarm sword since he is probably unfocused now, and then defeat him, 3.) if step three would not work then i would wait for him to try and attack, since u need good range to attack with a katana, when i decided to attack with lets say a overhead strike for example, id move in when he lifted the sword, over his head and jam him, then i would go from there. but still running would always be my first idea. -
hey for those of u who practice arts that envolve daggers are any of u actually tought how to throw daggers and objects like them. i know people who can throw daggers, shurikens, etc. and they say its in how u flick ur rist when throw it. but these people i got that from taught them selves SUPPOSEDLY. are any of u actually taught how to throw daggers and if u are is what i listed about the techniques, for throwing daggers correct or is it a different concept to do besides how u use ur wrist also, can those concepts be applied to throwing other things, such as a baseball for example.

Worst martial arts movie?
masterintraining replied to Grenadier's topic in Martial Arts Gaming, Movies, TV, and Entertainment
i like alot of the wu tang clan presents movies to favorite would probably be ten tigers of shaolin, but thats not the point of this post i would have to say that the worst i have ever seen was kung pow i will only watch it sometimes because some of the parts are funny, but i still think the movie in its hole sucks. but i would like to see or atleast find out the movie they got it from, even though the movie might forever be scared because of how bad it was messed up thanks to kung pow, kung fooy i heard was bad to. i'd say the karate kid movies werent bad films but just had bad martial arts( come own that crane crap was the dorkiest thing i have ever seen in my life if i was in that situation i would just have delivered a flying side and finished it all) but they did teach u some good values, well the first and second atleast, the third karate kid was horrible, and next karate kid i thought had know purpose. -
wait this might sound slow or something but i thought joe lewis was a boxer.

i was using the high thing as a example, in almost every confrontation there will be some kind of way to analyze something about ur opponent, most fights including ones i have been in or seen never start figt for know reason to many people carry guns knowadays or in gangs for you to do that. if u work at a bar than u can analyze and know the potential threat level of drunk guy, if u are walking down a bad street and u see somebody coming towards you holding something then that is analyzation and that is knowing ur threat level, and other things like fighting stance if the fight goes that far and u can have enough time. its basicly about analyzing the things u can and have enough time for, i just listed what i listed as a meens of explanation or example. ( know do u understand)

Maybe it's just me, but I don't like think this is good either for the ring or the street. A. Analyzing is a good thing, but you are WAY overanalyzing anything that you will have time for in a fight. Fights start and end quickly. you don't have time to analyze stance - many times there will not even be a stance, just a sudden strike. I see / participate bar fights all the time. rarely does anyone assume any stance. I don't even assume a stance until after the fighting has begun, and while that is going on, things are too intense to be focusing on what stance a person is in. Also, by the way they are attacking, you cannot asset what intent they intend to do to you. I may only be punching you now because I don't see the bottle on the bar next to me. Once I see it, BAM! Also, with the high stress of the situation, you don't have time to think "Okay, I need to use lethal moves against this guy" you just use what comes out, which is going to be what is ingrained in you. From a sport fighting perspective, you are usually told what style the guy practices beforehand, and if you do your legwork, can probably get video of the guy fighting, unless it's a local event. In this case, you do all of your analysis before the fight and train accordingly. I think your A is valid, but not in the context you are trying to put it. C. you can strike and control a person. It's a boxing term called stalking. I keep you in the quadrant of the ring that I want you in by using aggressive footwork, making angles and cutting you off. From a street perspective, it's not necessarily relying on a lucky punch. It's doing as you are trained - punching in combination. one shot may not KO him, but three or four might. I do agree that the easiest method to control him is grappling. However, by grappling, you do have to be careful that there are no other attackers. doesn't always happen that way, but it can happen. D. Is the ultimate goal anyway... that's merely ending the confrontation and is not strategy related. i did not say to look at the stance ur opponent is in that was a post made by another member, true sometimes u can tell alot about the way ur opponent might fight if u actually have time 2 do it, but like u said that seldom comes. i merely said analyze to know ur threat level a person, who is high own X and crack is obviously going to be more dangerous to u than a really fat guy having a bad day.

wow all three of us have something in comand, i plan to open up my own kungfu school and eventually a franchise. andi am also in highschool( sophmore to be exact) i would choose possibly a bodyguard, or if u want to be a bouncer, id make sure i pick a club that dose not have a huge rep for alot of fights , and when they do they dont get to big or horrible so u dont have as big of a chance of getting shot or stabbed etc, even if i hate the music, over all hiphop is my favorite music style but because of the high rate of people getting shot or killed for the dumbest things own the planet so i would not choose a hiphop club, i would probably choose something like a country music club. and just to make sure nothing dose happen u might want consider wearing a bullet proof vest, just incase.[/b]

About the style(s) used in "the karate kid"
masterintraining replied to Azula's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
i had always thought that they had not used a main style in the movie but had just used a bunch of techniques from magazines, or random karate classes, because of the fact that it did not look real at all, but i guess i was wrong. -
it took me some time but after alot of thinking, reading, and asking my sifu and assisstant instructor many numerous questions i have formulated a main strategy for all martial artist but primarily kungfu especially since so many people have all these questions 2 whether or not Kungfu is actually effective in combat. I call it A.C.D. A: analyze- since all fighters, do not fight the same and are not all, as deadly or difficult, because of this you must take time to view ur opponent, and analyze your oppenent to find many things before attacking. things such as : style of fighting( if you can tell ) which will sometimes reveal how ur may react to sertain moves, strike, or best moves but sometimes not all of this is sertain from just looking at ur opponents fighting style so U must keep and open mind, also u must then find out what type of threat level ur in to figure out some techniques ur opponent might use. if he is just trying to mess with u or is playing to much then his/her moves may not be as effective becasue they are not focused or just trying to make you look bad, so u can capsize own the fact that there is no will or strength behind there moves, and it shows that your in as much danger as ud be if u were fighting a person out for ur blood, because of that you do not have to use as much lethal moves as you would for a person trying to kill u. C: control - however strong ur opponent may be, or how deadly they are after u first analyze ur opponent. next is 2 disable ur opponenet through taking control of ur opponent, if u just keep kicking and punching that person then unless u land a lucky shot then that person will probably just keep coming. and even if u do that could just make them even more angry which would raise the level of threat ur opponent is,instead take control of ur opponenet to stop them from being able to fight u anymore, and make the person like an action figure( your the one controling it , making it move, etc.) now they only do what u let them. there are many ways to do this, some by grappling, others by take downs whatever takes control that person. and last 2nd D: destroy- simple as that once ur opponent has been takin conrtol of continue to do that but this is where u use strikes in succesion with ur conrtol taking moves. example: u have ur opponent in a arm trap and they cant get there other over to hit u. ( control) while that person is in the arm lock, knee him attack him to the face with a mantis backfist or another move, break his arm ( if that person had a level of threat needed for that) than take that arm and use it to throw them and after they are own the ground crush them under ur foot with a stomp.( if needed) and u have stoped that person from attacking, in other words destroyed. and thats my strategy in a nutshell, please reply to this and give me ur oppinion own this theory, it might need some work so i would love some helpful criticism.

okay i asked my sifu to show me some chi breathing techniques so i am may be able to strengthen my moves, aswell as the force of my blows, the health and healing abillites, and just because it seems like something i might want 2 do. this is what i was told 2 do: breath in threw my nose in doing so also press out my enrgy and push my gut out,( but dont press ur chest out or up) and try to force ur enrgy up through ur spinal cord. breath out through ur mouth and bring/suck ur stomach in while u breath out, and try to visualize ur energy being pushed rigt passed/behind ur belly button. aswell as focus of course. but for some reason everytime i am doing this for a long period of time i think i start to feel my energy but instead i cultivate a burp, why might this keep happening. am i doing something wrong well i have been doing this for about the past 4 days and i was just wandering how long will it take before i start seeing results, 2.) is there a specific stance that u should be in while dong chi breathing moves, like horse stances, long stances, can u do it sitting down etc. 3.) and last can anybody give me some tips for chi cultivation from there own experience, or some chi stories.[/b]

i know u see alot about it in movies like drunken master, but how effective, is drunken boxing, i am not trying 2 disrespect anyones art, i just want to know has anyone ever been able to defeat there opponent using drunken style,or know of any1 who has, it would really be helpful to me if u could tell me some of these " more practicle aspects " of drunken boxing.

well u have come to the right person here, i study mantis kungfu at my academy ( well its the tan tui mantis system but its still mantis) and there are many things we can and do against some of the moves u listed, first thing is that alot of the technques that we use consists of alot of defelect-trap-take control. we use method of defence for mostly every defence situation. u listed jab, we use that method of defence all the time for the jab. u also listed the hook. we use the same principle, but we just defele and trap in a diffeerent direction oh yeah i forgot to tell u we do ALOT OF TRAPPING MOVES, and we usaully always have are hand in the mantis claw postion or the mantis fist position. as for the front kick technique u can block down like u do in karate, or block with ur leg, or just move out the way and counter ( that is what sifu usualy uses own me.) i think it is a great sytem and i really like it. and we also do a good amount of ground work to, and alot of fast backfists it is a very made well style, and i like it alot.
-
in are academy we use both, but i personaly like using the backfist in combat conbonations. better, it just seems to work better for me, i think when it comes right down to it always right down to the fighter in question which is more effective.
-
well i have a all fighting videogame collection, so i got alot of things i can tell u. i did not have all the old sytems u all had because alot of it was B4 my time. but as for curretn games a real good one is jet lei "rise to honer" is great plus no magical gimics. DOA 2 hardcore is pretty good to just not alot of fighters in it. if u like anime/manga naruto is pretty good but, it dose have some mystcle techniques and stuff in it, same for the streetfighter series, and the dragonball Z budokai series. oh and a very good classic is virtue fighterespecially virtue fighter evolution.
