Who is your "mentor" in MA??
masterintraining replied to karatekid1975's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
my mentors are both my sifu, and the assitant instructor sifu has taught basically every technique i know, and how to apply them, i have even learned applications that u would not think were possible with the mantis style, such as boxing applications for are certain forms, and a leapord style form even though we practice mantis style kungfu, basically he haS been the main person who has taught me how to defend myself at all. the assitant instructor own the other hand, i usually have more solo time to practice with because my sifu also gives math tudering and is a teacher at a highschool so he can sometimes get very busy or tired. the asistant instructor has taught me mainly the phylosophical aspects of the martial arts, and has given me many books, and movies, that show good martial arts techniques, and excellent phylosophy. aswell as being my main sparring partner, and showing me different aproaches to situations. they have both been very big influences in my life, and also came into my life, at a somewhat bad time so they kinda gave me confindence and showed me how to think, carry, and belive in myself. -
in my school u dont start sparring until, u gain ur first sash, ( whit sash) whuch i right after ur first test.
-
someone may have said this already and if so my apologizes; my Dojo is a little different when it comes to sparring, we have pads but we dont really used them unless its a belt test, because they want to let us incorperate all of are techniques, inlcuded shots to head. and because of that i have a pretty good idea what works and doesn't work, my mantis backfist hurts a good bit because i have tried to mold it after my sifu's ( though mine has only bout1/6 the force behind it) and i can test it own actually fighters frequently.

Okay i was just wandering after looking back own some of the dumn things i did as a little kid, what was the biggest,/ dumbest thing u can remeber ( brain cell permitting lol.) doing in the name of imitating ur favorite teenage, multi-colored hero team. if not u than sumthing some1 u no did tryin to pretend they were power rangers, ill go first. after seeing power rangers, i jumped side kicked of my bed, but because of my lack of martial arts expierince at the time ( age 4) i.. well... lets just say i landed wrong. (oww) another time was running like a power ranger down the hall way and did not get make it all the way around the corner and darked my eye.

karate kid part 1 - told the story of what was going own in my life, especially concering school. 2.) Enter the Dragon - showed me the beuty of martial arts, without using flashy wushu, or fake ineffective stuff.( not to discriminate on wushu practicioners) 3.) Ong-bak- re-inforced the concept of not needing movie kung-fu or wushu to make a good martial arts movie. 4.) fearless- shown the other side of martial arts; the spiritual and mental aspects of, the martial arts. 5.) the streetfighter starring sony Chiba -portrayed the martial arts as more then the just stuff that works in movies but not in real life, it showed the deadlyness of it aswell. 6.) and of course the POWER RANGERS!!!!!!!! for inspiring all little kids to get out there and break all the bones in your body in the name of imitation.

i think i remember them, was it a show own kids wb/fox kids ? i am a huge naruto and DBZ fan, but DBZ sorta lost its luster once the series ended. i also Love Ranma 1/2 but it seems more like a comdy.martial arts type of show. not so big own all the samuri shows though, sept for afro samurai. i also like tengou tenge, and real bout high school, there r lots more but theres 2 many to list.

cant wait to c it it. i have always likd jet li's wushu for its advanced and beutiful forms. and i hav always likd Chans films for his acrobatics, and resourcefull fighting style. i think this movie will be very good. and yes drunken master is one of my favorite kung-fu films, it is very good. this is not to be confused with " the legend of drunken master " which also included Chan but was not nearly as good.

My son got into a fight at school!
masterintraining replied to Shotokan-kez's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
okay i am 15 and i i know xactly how he feels, after training so hard for so long and then beaten like that it can damage his confidence in himself extremely. it has happended to me, it has happended to kids i know, i know some people who completly gave up own martial arts once they lost a fight.but u have to first know and analyze some things about the situation. 1.) he was out numberd it was 2 against one and, neather of them were fighting fair. and from what u said in the message he did not even try to use his martial arts, to defend himself with, so he must relize that he has to use it in order for it to work in the first place. 2.) my self -confindence has been damaged from loosinf a fight, or even doing bad in sparring before. heck i was a little unsure of myself after some kid wrestled me to the ground a couple of days ago, but the way i gt my mind out of the gutter was by thinking of everything u did and did not do in the situation. i also did not try to use my training cuss i really did not feel that threatend, 2 i got low to the ground, but i did not try to pick him up, and i sorta gave up after a certain point, and 3 i did not even try using my martial arts training in the first place.( much like u said ur son did) . it is alot easier to make urself feel better bout what u did after its over, and u can think about everything that happended like i just showed u. 3.) this next thing canbe the most cruial thing that can make someone who has lost a fight feel good about themself again. SPARR. anytime i have ever felt a little unsure of myself i try and find someone to sparr, because it can restor confindence dramatically, since it deals with actual combat, it helps prepare for next encounters,( cus trust me when someone thinks they can get over own u, or beat u in something they will try and do it as much as possible, and sparring is best way to prepare( keep in mind u must do actually contact, no point sparring so that u acuralty simulate a situation.) and self-defence sitations such as how to get out of head locks or chokes, like the boys put him in. but one more thing to remember, let him work himself through some things, remember time heals all wounds. -
sparring problem
masterintraining replied to masterintraining's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
well thanks yall for the advice as specially the one bout keeping it simple i was under the impression that because i new many techniques from forms that can b very effective, i had to use them, C i felt that cus i new all these different moves, that could defeat people easily, i had 2 use them cus it felt like if i didnt i was wasting wat my teacher had taught me.so thats one problem i had by the way wat should i do for practice besides, forms& combos, to help sparr i am a only child, and no one around here studies, so wat shood i do. -
haveany of u seen this show, its own spike and made by same people who made boondocks. but i heard it was only a five episode, show and they were all parts of a movie seperated is that true? but anyway any1 seen it?

i went to a martial arts tournament yesterday called the American warrior martial arts tournament maybe some of you have heard of it. i did very well in form out of bout 5-6 people in my division i placed in second. but in sparring something happended that has happend b4, i practice my techniques from forms in combinations over and over again but everytime i sparr i dont think, and my mind goes blank. this is helpful to some xtent because just like bruce Lee said when u stop and have to think, u r put at a disadvantage. but the problem is that i loose all knowledge of my combinations i have practiced and just go strate going by martial arts instinct. i sparred with a kid that i had already sparred with last time i was there i beet him2-3 last time. this year he beat me 1-3, i should have gotten a poin because rules state that, u r not allowed to hit somebody so hard that ur head goes back, and he hit me so hard that my helmet turned and i had to re-adjust it. and knowone said anything, ofcourse i could not argue and it was not only time judges were not calling hits, or penalties. but still the point is that i cant think well when i am in the ring so alot of my more alberate, and form techniques & moves get thrown out the window. maybe it is becaus ei try to b 2 fancy with my moves and and dont stick to more practical aspects of my forms/kung-fu do any other kung-fu fighters like me ever have this problem, i got to figure this out soon, because the biggest tournament in Ohio is coming up soon( the Arnold scwazenagar martial arts tournament) and i have to figure out and nutrilize this problem.anybody have any incite own this problem i would apreciate some comments from traditional kung-fu practicioners, that sparr that might no were i am comming from, but comments from anybody who may have had this or know how to correct this will do.

The big 'what did you all get for christmas' topic
masterintraining replied to Havoc88's topic in General Chat
i got- the boondocks first season( the best animated show ever, besides robot chicken) legends of wu-tang: legend of liquid sword 2 spirited killer( tony jaa's fisrt ever movie appereance.) ultimate game( also a movie) sun dragon( also a movie) Bruce Lee man and the myth( also movie) the streetfighter staring sony Chiba( also movie) return of the streetfighter sister streetfighter shogun ninjas( also movies) ninja warriors ultimate masters ( also movie) weight lifting gloves hand/ankle weights sonic rivals ( psp game) okami( GREAT PS2 game) a bionicle the new stephon marbury shoes ( starbury's) a new gym bag a binder and a calender. i had one of the best Christmas's in a long time. -
okay this happened, to me today me, my cousin and my mom, were dropping of some clothes in are local charety clothing drop of.( i wanted to go in the day but because of christmas eve being tomorrow we thought we might not have enough time. i are already sorta felt like jugging from where we were that someone was going to come ( call me psychic) and sure enough somone came out of the other side of the parkin lot. i see him from a distance, so i immidatly started trying to throw the two bags in the in the shoot ASAP ( but as luck would have it they were to hevy bags ) but by the grace of God he just kept walking past us threough a back ally short cut, are car was right there with the moteor still running and my mom and cousin still in it, but i felt unconfortable bcus i was at a disadvantage, even though i had every1 right there, i still was holding this to hevy bags if cums at me it will take me atleast a second or to, 2 drop them down, and a second or 2 might B 2 late, he was not directly next to me 30-40 feet away we he came by, but it still made me uneasy, ... and then a thought came through my mind, even though i know martial arts i was still a lil scared, specialy since people r crazy round this year. i guess i was even scared that my martial arts might not come through. maybe that was a sign i need to train more, ever since i stop going to the gym when summer ended i only exercise 3xs a week at practice, and if i spend that day doing only grappling then i dont really get a swet in at all. during summer i exercised 6xs a week. i cant go back exaclty as soon as i fel like it because i depend own my mom 2 sighn me up and she has to pay for both of us. but i dont really practice atall at home anymore for basicly no reason, and i do want to open up a dojo 1day, so i guess i got practice as much as possible to get there ( and black sash test is next year.) am i over reacting to this situation, can any1 shed some lot,own this please, am i right in my sumptions or jus over reacting.

i happened too b shopping the other day and i came across this toy that said karate masters playset, it came with, a karate gi a fake blackbelt a piece of fome rubber wood that stuck together and broke apart practically at the touch. I am sorry but since when did the martial arts become a play thing. and what was in my opinion the worst, part of the thing was that it came with a thirty minute video that said that" in thirty minutes u could become a real Karate master " so all of u who have spent ur lives training in karate trying to master ur craft, got the short end of the stick, because u could have become a master in 30 min. i dont even know what kind of person wold ever even make a video like that, and pass it off as real, martial arts. or what self respecting parent who dose not whant there child to get into a fight with someone or be forced to defend themselves and get the crap beat out of them, would ever by there child something as dumn as this thing. have any of u heard of this toy, and if so what is ur take own this discrace of the martial arts.

How many martial arts have you taken?
masterintraining replied to Patrick's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
i have only studied 2 karate, when i was younger, and currently study mantis kung-fu, i did take a few boxing lessons when i was younger, and still have the hand rap and trunks, but i had to stop when i busted my hand. -
i was jus watchin shaolin & wu- tang starring gordon lui and even though i have not finish watchin the movie i am a little confused though. i have always thought that wu-tang was a sword style of kung-fu( aside from being 1 of the rawest rap groups ever besides bone thugs in harmony,& dipset, and the original rap groups like suger hill, but thats of topic ) while shaolin was both hand and weapons. but i have heard many different explanations for what it is. can some1 else please tell me what wu-tang style really is. it was sword style in shaolin & wu-tang but i am not sure if thats it.

what happened at are academy today
masterintraining replied to masterintraining's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
actually i found out some new information about the perticular kid. this was his 3RD!!! time coming to my sifu or are academy. 1st time: my sifu had closed up and was leaving out the backway, like he normaly dose, and the kid came up to him in the back parking lot ( which happens to be very wide) and the same kid whent up to him saying he knows kung-fu to and all this and CHALLENGED MY SIFU TO SPARR. my sifu told him to go away because he dose not play with children and the boy left. 2nd: a mother and her 6year old son came to are academy for practice like they normaly do. and he came and was standing in the doorway blocking them from entering, so my sifu opended the door and made him move out of the way, and he again started talking about what he new, so my sifu asked him who was his master and he named another sifu whom my sifu nows very well, so my sifu told him to get some respect and live, so the boy did. I talked to the son of the sifu that this kid supposedly trains under, because i go to school with him and he said he thinks that he knows who he is once i discribed him, and told me that he could not fight anyway and just goes around asking for challenges to act like he is good. he gave me his name. and then gave me the number of his dads sifu so that my sifu could possibly talk to him about this kid. but my sifu has also told me that he has had enough of this coming around doing this, and that next time he dose this my sifu is going to like the door and let me fight him( notice i said fight not sparr ) or he might do it depending own the scenario like they would do when he trained. so now that every1 is aware of this kid inclouding his sifu, and i am training extra hard, and we all no he will come back so now... we wait. -
today i was at practice working own my stretching when this kid walked in who was the same age as me. it is very common for people to come in and ask questions about class so at first i did not pay much attention, till he opened his mouth. he sticks his head in and asks the assistant instructor who was sitting right by the door " where the african dude at" ( my sifu happens to be black) the assistant instructor simply responded no africans are here. " no i meen that guy who runs this place, which then the asstant said he has gone now, so the kid started asking questions like what style do u teach here and stuff like that to which the assistant instructor answered in very philosopical manner, he also asked what belt was he since he was not whearing uniform. Then he asked did something u never do. he turned to him and said i study kungfu 2, to whcih the assistant said Ok. then he asked the assistant do we sparr at are academy 2 which he said no we restore balence hear. so then he asked the assistant instructor 2 sparr, i repeat: he came in of the streats, unanounced in his streat clothes and tennis shoes and challenged a black sash to sparr. when it was declined, he turned and asked me to sparr with even though he had jus told him no, and ofcourse i was not going to accept a challenge from somone like that no matter if sifu/instructors where there or not, for all i know he could be own drugs, or have a gun or somethin, own him. so then he precided to show what kungfu forms/moves he new am from what i saw he was not bluffing about knowing kung-fu( though i still was not going to sparr with him though) and after he did each move he asked him do u know this move, to which the asstant said, that could be a 1 of many moves from emany styles each time, so of course the kid obviously is not being taught any actual martial phylosphy or self-discipline, at his school. other whys he would never have walked into someone elses academy and want a fight. so then he said can my school sparr ur school, to which he was told, it is not my decision, so then he said " man u a rookie, im out of here" and left, and the assistant jus continued apon his business that he was doing b4 he walked in. now eather this kid goes to the cobra kai dojo from karate Kid or seriously needs to be taught a lesson, despite all this.apart of me wanted to saprr with him just to teach him a lesson, weather i win or loose i really wanted to jus do it to show him not to challenge uknown people to sparr. has this ever happend 2 any of u and if it did what did u all do, i also wanted to get him because of the fact he disrespected, the assitant instructor( who happens to be my mentor) and had know honor, if this was in feudal times, that could have been his death. i am jus a liitle irritated at all this what do all of u think.

well i like takedowns perticulary the 1 shotokan kid listed, but my fav is crushing hands of the mantis, and mantis retreat.
