  1. Interesting this is! weight = 119lbs age = 16 height = 68inches () bench = 110 Power level = (119+16+68+110)/50 = 6.3 (rounded to 1DP) Well; this seems slightly biased... Firstly this isn't a consistant formula... The results coming out aren't accurate as of the variables involved (weight, height etc) what does bench press have to do with weight or height, or even age? (I do math at Advanced Level for Uni, so this is a doddle!) And secondly, what does power level do with Karate? I thought it was about perseverance, developing one's self character, not about body building... If I wanted to do body building, I would've gone to a gym; not do Karate... (sorry if I'm being facetious here ) Sorry, but this does seem rather biased, and inconclusive... Shui Tora
  2. Woah! Your avatar is flicking so fast that it could just give someone a black out! [j/k] Good luck for your grading... I don't do Wado Ryu, but have a friend that does, remember to finish your techniques! What belt are you going for?
  3. When I compete, I must remember to only Kiai when I think I have performed a good technique in order to gain a point(s)... i think it is unnessecary (sp?) to kiai all the time, when your techniques are not getting the points... Only Kiai where appropiate...
  4. When doing Horse Stance, your knees should be bent outwards, your butt tucked in, and your feet firmly on the ground, pointing in the direction that you're facing... Remember to keep your back straight and shoulders should be slightly back...
  5. Oh... So basically a Dojo that hands out belts on money, without seeing if the student has an understanding of the kata, techniques and discipline... Thanks for that!
  6. You are looking on average.... 6weeks, bandaged up, on painkillers (most probably Co-codamole) and not doing anything (literally)... trust me, that happened to me once before in a kumite comp... not nice either! >.< Thing is, there is nothing to speed it up, you gotta give it time to heal, and like you said; I prove my point... Time is needed....
  7. *mutters* Lucky guess! [j/k] Yep, just letting time take care of it, My Sensei had me round his house for some pressure point massage on my opposite hand (iin some of my posts I talked about pressure massage to help the other side...) and its working, but I'm not gonna push it, I'm gonna let it give a week, and then see the Docs again... Hoepfully all should be good!
  8. Excuse my "ignorrance" but what is a "Mc Dojo"?
  9. Hey, Sorry for the double posting (but I'm not really bothered! ) I have seen the doctor, and basically I have sprained my wrist, along wiht a pinched nerve! >.< My mom knew this all along! And after I saw the Doc she was boasting how she knew it (read the post above me, and you'll understand! ) Anyhows, I've been to have an X-ray and no broken bones (YAY!) I'm on pain-killers for the pain, and have been ordered by the Doc to have a week off of doing nothing (including Karate... But it is rest that I need!) Well; thought I should tell ya, seeing as I said all will be revealed...
  10. Konnichi Wa! *bows* Welcome to KF, hope you enjoy it here! Shui Tora

    Kiai!

Yep... That was happened to me when I performed Tekki Shodan! Such an embarrassing moment, but I got on with it, needless to say that everyone was giggling...
  12. My firend accidentily had a hairline fracture on the top of her foot from an inccident at school, and she walked on it for a week thinking that the pain was from a twisted ankle, but she went to the hospital and found out that it was a fracture! Boy, was she surprised! My appointment is today in the afternoon, so all shall be revealed then... Lets hops so!
  13. Yeah - I have booked an appointment (or rather my mom has... She's a doc, and may know what it is, but as of ethical issues, she cannot diagnose me, and so she won't tell me what it is either! ) I'm hoping I won't need an X-ray, but that is up to the Doc... If anything is needed to be done on it (like surgery, hoping it won't, then I dunno who I am gonna live without Karate! ) Man, typing with my left hand is hard! Literally! But I can type fairly fast (being left-handed is very handy! excuse the pun! ) Thanks peeps!
  14. Thanks for the replies peeps... You see, that is what I cannot explain! I've remembered everything that I have done (I have a photographic memory) and I can see nothing that I have done wrong to my wrist to cause it... Once again... Thanks
  15. Hi, I'm concerned about my wrist... I dunno what I have done to it, and I'm hoping that you guys could shed some light onto it. From Monday night onwards, my wrist has been killing me (not literally! ) and I have painfull pains down my wrist when i try to pick something up of even move it, not only that, but if i try to pick something up (like a glass of water) my hand will shake and then my wrist will go weak and numb... Now either I have caught a tendon doing some Karate, or I have pinched a nerve, but neither of those will cause my wirst to shake, go weak and then become numbe for about 5 minutes... Any thought/suggestions are welcomed! Shui Dragon
  16. Could be locking your elbow (like Bushido said) and then as you are returning to do oi-tuski, you could be trying do unlock too quickly... (Got me? ) Either that or you are not relaxing when doing the techniques... I find i do better if I'm relaxed then all tensed up...

    Kiai!

Acutally, I done the most ludicrous kiai ever... I was performing Tekki Shodan, and at the first place where I was to kiai, (well I did) but it was high pitched (I didn't shout properly)... (How embarrassing! ) Another one was where I was doing kumite, and I done a backfist to the temple (with control! ) and instead of a kiai I coughed and splattered over the place... Another embarrassing moment! But it was all gravy afterwards...
  18. There is no point in running before you can walk... Practice all techniques first, no matter what speed they are at... No good doing them at high speed when you do not know the techniques, ya? Tehcnique always comes first; then speed, then power...
  19. ^ Yeah; basically what Sohan!
  20. Cool! That would be great to do! Good Luck Mizu... And make sure you don't poke your eye out with those needles; they can be very pesky!
  21. When I was a novice, after four weeks of training; I wanted to drop out. There were people from my old school (that I really hated, and they too hated me) that saw me train (of course, being a white belt at the time didn't feel right...) So I wanted to drop out there and then. However, my Sensei told me that everyone started a white belt, and worked their way up from there. (I know I'm deviating from the point; but I'm getting to that ) Most of ours that drop out are either red or blue belt... They see that Karate isn't about getting a Black Belt (that takes years to get there, and hard work) while they think that after 7 months, they should be black belt... I too thought like that, until I began to see the wider picture of karate.... Our Club isn't a McDojo... My Sensei believes that handing out black belts (like they're going out of fashion) isn't the way of Karate. You have to prove that you understand Karate, not to use it in your own selfishness and vain... In all; it is up to the karate-ka whether he/she wants to drop out, but the main for us is Red/Blue belt; although this year we have seen an increase of people joining (up by 3.5%... YES! ) Good news for our club... I hope that answers your question...
  22. My sensei put up a poster in our Club's Discussion thread on the net, and I e-mailed him in curiosity about it... After that, he replied by telling what weapons he'd trained in, and then after that, it went on from there... He teaches Kenjutsu and Kyudo, and I was entered for some compeititions (coming, ironically, both 2nd place in each! ) I wanted to start as it was good to have on my CV for Uni applications and jobs etc, but also it made me different in the fact that my friends at school and others did not understand that use, the why's and how's etc of a katana and a Yumi... As for getting into competitions, just use Google.com and type it in there! (My Sensei did! ) and it should come up with the relevant stuff... Hope that helps!
  23. I'm not afraid to die... There comes a point in our lives when we die. We can not stop it, so we have to accept the fact that eventually we will die. There really is no point in thinking that something is going to happen to you, of course it will; but you cannot anticipate when it'll happen; that is the fun of it! Here's a quote from Bushido Shoshinshu by Taira Shigesuke, Code of the Samurai, and they sum the view of death pretty well; That is what I think, and agree with!
  24. We have two sessions on a Monday and a Friday. The first session is for the beginners up to Yellow belt, then the Senior grades come in after the novices have left... It depends on the scenario (sp?) About a month before gradings, we practice all the belts tecniques (starting form bluw all the way to black) so that everyone gets a taste of what is to come. That same is with Katas, we do each kata step by step, then have the relevant grade (and higher) for that kata to go through... Other than that, we usually pull something outta the hat for warm-ups... Nothing too hard or too special really...
  25. Okay... Your first tournament; you're bound to be very anxious and nervous (I was for my first one too! ) Kata - Be relaxed, repeat it/them like you would do for your gradings... Have a good stance, good power... And where it needs it; timing. If you do perfect timing between moves (speed parts up etc) then that shows! Team Kata - Try and make a noise that is obvious (not to the judges; like a stamping kick at a certain part) for you to know where you are meant to be! (Got me so far? ) Kumite - Make you sure you know space awareness... When you do a punch, make sure it is controlled contact, and Kiai! and don't leave it there either! Bring it back and see if the judge allows the point! Hope that helps! Don't worry; do your best. You're bound to be nervous... Enjoy it! Its your first one!
