  1. ^ I have plenty of those where they came from! If you need any of a particular subject, do ask!
  2. I don't shave my legs... Somehow if a guy doesn't have a tattoo then what is the point of shaving? Yes, if you have a tattoo, but without one whats the point? I shave my face (duh!) but also thinking about my chest (I have some, not a lot like a monkey... but some) not really sure if i should.... Any suggestions?
  3. I s'pose it could be something like this; " O mawasu no mawari anata no gi to obi o massugu ni suru..." But then some Dojo's would pronounce it differently... Or, to save embarressment, just ask your Sensei... Quote; " He who asks is a fool for 5 minutes... He who doesn't ask is a fool for a lifetime..."
  4. You are always learning... No matter what your age, you are still learning... You're not too old to start up MA... most of the poeople in my class are over 35! I'd say you're young enough to begin!
  5. Think of it this way; if the monks in the templs of Japan and Chinese were Buddhists... Then how come they managed to be Warrior Monks (like the Shaolin Temple?) So; yeah, you could be a MA if you were a Buddhist, as long as you vowed that you would only use MA in self-defence and not in vain. Like Alsey said; Most styles come from cultures with Buddhist background...
  6. Well; if you need anything explaining, or need any help with Maths, Chemistry, Biology and Physics, you can always PM Me Bushido! Maybe we should set up a thread for those that need help with stuff?
  7. Why do we train? If we don't, then the ideas and concepts of Karate would be lost... Simple as that.
  8. Yes; that is correct... Potential Energy is energy working against a specific force (like gravity.) Now, first off you need Kinetic energy to begin to momentum, once you first has achieved enough kinetic energy (or enough momentum), the energy is then transformed into Potential Energy as your fist now has enough energy within it to be released against a specific force/mass/weight... So in other words, your fist begins to move (kinetic energy) as it is travelling, you are gaining Potential Energy (P.E) at the same time as your fist is moving. Once it reaches the target, the rest of the Kinetic Energy transforms into P.E (along with what is gained during movement) so that the overall force is bigger. How does a pad have P.E? When you hit the pad, like i have said before, your overall force (or Resultant Force) is bigger than the pad's balanced forces, therefore causing it to move... When your fist hits the pad, the energy is transferred into the pad, and so your fist losed the overall force. If we tried this, what would happen would be a lot of pain! Newton's third law; " For every action, there is an equal and opposite force. " So; we try to hit the brick wall. The wall has a bigger opposite force than to our fist, therefore not allowing us to move it. It has more weight, and more mass than to our fist. Hence why we cannot move it, as the weight/mass and speed of our fist is too small.
  9. At our Dojo, any outside visitos must take off their belt (no matter the colour) and join the white belts..
  10. You have my thoughts in Meditation Sohan...
  11. ichi, ni, san, shi, go, roku, nana, hachi, ku, juu (1-10 in Japanese)... Yookoso anata no!
  12. I have two! Naruto (Very good... some poetic licence there, but the plot is great! And the music is brilliant too! ) And Samurai X (or otherwise called "Rurouni Kenshin", all about samurai, never would've thought that! And again, the music is excellent in this one too!)
  13. Nah - that isn't the armpit of the universe... I have been to worse places (don't want to mention them here in case of insulting people who live there!)
  14. Now that is freaky! Were you three neighbours, but didn't really take any notice!?
  15. Hey! That's where I'm from too! It is a small world sometimes!
  16. Yes, you are right there... You can also find out the amount of work done (in Joules) by; Force (newtons) x Distance (m)... However, for this particular subject, work has to be in Joules (you cannot change the unit)... And power is iether in Joules of watts, the only thing that fits into this subject is time... I'm gonna look into this (give me 2 weeks) and I'll post what I find... Should I post it here, or in a new thread? Shui Tora...
  17. !.) Okay, first off; yes - I am planning to become a Medical Doc, or either a Diagnostic Radiographer... 2.) Secondly, Physics and Maths go hand in hand, and P.E (potential energy is easy to understand) 3.) And as for Hips, well; they work! and its been proven! Are you trying to say that V = velocity, and so; Total Vel. = V(hip) + V(Punch/hip) and then whatever the result is, you can then use the acceleration formula to find out the speed, and then put that result in the speed forumla, and mess about with the constant variables of Time and Distance... And there you have it! point of most power, in different seceniors (sp?) But seeing as the hip is a variable, you cannot work it out as easily as before... How can you work out the power of the hip, seeing as its a variable? Unless you could use the speed formula and measure the distance between a wall (so to say) and time it to see how long it would take to flick your hip at a certain distance (all with the help of a slow camera!) It could be done! But i don't have the equipment! Have i lost you now?
  18. I think that there is a misconception there... If you actually hit the heart then like Sohan said; you'll cause the heart to fibrillate, but aiming under the heart is not what i've heard before. If you were to punch where the Aorta is, then you'll be able to shut off a small supply of blood, which could cause some of the cells to starve of oxygen, causing death... (could being the word... not entirely proven, just theoritcal) I'm not really sure... It's not something that I would go out and try... In this stage, its all theoritical and so we can guess where it is until somebody tries it... Until then, we have our opinions... (Not sounding biased towards this... just staying mutal...)
  19. Thinking about it (punch wise); there would be greater power before you twist your fist (excuse the pun), as the distance travelled would allow you to use your hip to gain more potential energy (comes to physics it does! )... But then that would become a variable as the distance can vary on a fight... :-S Hmmm; interesting... *goes away and tries to work it out...* On a kick, it would be just before you perform the actual kick, as you'll use most of the potential energy getting your foot up etc, and so once its up, you can use youir hips to do the kick... Its all the hips which do all of the work, and so that is where you get all of your energy from... I believe (and it has been proven through Ken Jutsu) that if you aim behind the target (or carry on your punch) that most of your body weight will add to the potential energy being used. In other words, the point of power is probably 5-10cm before the target... Did anyone understand that?
  20. We are going to get a scanner and issue member cards later next year... Sensei is finalising the business with the company... Hopefully, we'll get a chart with absences, attendances etc along with our age, DOB and a picture... (A picture... hmmm; I only have one left, and it isn't a good one! )
  21. Shotokan Karate has the fist on the hip... However, I have experimented with my Sensei using different positions of the fist on both the hip, and ribs... Our conclusions found out that neither really makes a difference. Having your fist on your ribs makes it easier to do short, fast punches to the collar bone and chest area. Having your fist on your hips means you can use your hips properly to throw the punch out using all of your body's energy. Therefore, in evidence, the positioning of the fist amkes little difference!
  22. ^ Nice explanation Jiffy... To be honest; everyone dies at some point. May not be at the same time, but it happens. What is the point of fearing it when everyone else is going through it with you? If you fear death, then you are afraid to die... Like Jiffy said; if it isn't fear, but something different you experience to death, then you re not afraid to die. Think of it this way; you see someone close to you die. What would you feel? Sadness? Remorse? etc... Feeling fear only shows that you are trying to cling onto life for all it's worth... Hey! Life's too short to do most things! If you keep death in the back of your mind, in any situtation, then you have nothing to fear... Not being afraid to die shows that you have accepted what is to happen, after all, it happenes to everyone; its our fate; no?
  23. We use a register, and our Sensei uploads the data onto our accounts (all very high tech.) so we can see what days we were in etc... Sensei keeps and electronic copy as well as a paper copy... Very simple...
  24. So... what are you trying to say? That there is a conspiracer (sp?) behind the making of the Karate Kid? *ghostly*... [j/k]
  25. Very simple! I like it! I think it could be Some Chinese Martial Art, or even Goju-Ryu... But then I have seen Goju being parcticed and it is different to the film... Could be a Mixed Art?
