A female Ninja was called a Kunoichi. As for Shinobi I think it's just another term for ninja, although in a lot of games it's an elite ninja clan or something. I copied this from wikipedia, hope it gives you some insight: Ninja is Sino-Japanese compound derived from the two kanji (Japanese characters of Chinese origin) used to write shinobi-no-mono (忍の者), one of the native Japanese words for people who practice ninjutsu (sometimes mis-pronounced ninjitsu). Ninja and shinobi-no-mono, along with shinobi, another variant, became popular in the post-World War II phonetically with the kanji 志能備, has been traced as far back as Japan's Asuka period, when Prince Shotoku is alleged to have employed one of his retainers as a ninja. The underlying connotation of shinobi (忍, pronounced nin in Sino-Japanese compounds) is "to do quietly" or "to do so as not to be perceived by others" and—by extension—"to forebear," hence its association with stealth and invisibility. Mono (者, likewise pronounced sha or ja) means "person." The nin of ninjutsu is the same as that in ninja, whereas jutsu (術) means skill or art, so ninjutsu means "the skill of going unperceived" or "the art of stealth"; hence, ninja and shinobi-no-mono (as well as shinobi) may be translated as "one skilled in the art of stealth." Similarly, the pre-war word ninjutsu-zukai means "one who uses the art of remaining unperceived." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ninja http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shinobi

I just would like to add that some people aren't as flexible as others and that may not make them be able to do some of the more complex kicks in TKD, etc.

Internal arts and air.
Ace2021 replied to cathal's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
I've heard of that..that the air helps manifest ki/chi etc. I thought it was just the typical concept of it though..not anything specific.. -
In I think..four states, it's illegal to carry around nunchucku around..let alone a bladed/wooden sword. which I dislike very much

I would try to find a new dojo even if it teaches a different art and drag him along. If you try to instruct him he could hurt himself if you aren't doing it correctly. if you have faith in your teaching abilities, then i'd say go ahead..if you felt you've learned enough to teach your friend some stuff. I teach some of my friends some stretches and punches, kicks, and throws/submissions in my various arts. ultimately it may not be as good as a real sensei..but it's certainly better than nothing.

How many of you have actual combat experience?
Ace2021 replied to kenpo4life's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Jiffy pretty much summed it up for me. -
I find it easier to break boards and ice slabs if I can visualize energy "Chi/Ki" built up in my index and middle knuckles, and when knifehand (karate chop), visualizing it built up along the edge of my hand. maybe it's just a mental thing, not sure.

Having a yellow belt moment or two or three ...

That sounds pretty frustrating.. -
George Lucas should've hired them to do lightsaber choreography..that was better than most Star Wars movie duels I see!

Wing Chun in Action!

Even if he wasn't a kickboxer..he needs to seriously work on his balance. Falling in a real life fight is potentially fatal. -
chinese martial art in ufc
Ace2021 replied to AceKing's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
I think Shaolin Kungfu would be effective in the UFC, mostly because..if you've ever seen a shaolin monk training session, those guys are hardcore. they train everything..even groin. I saw a video of a guy getting repeatedly getting kicked in the groin and not wincing. If his whole body were that resilent, he could stand a signifigant chance. -
Dim mak

Any of you seen Kill Bill VoL 2? I've always wondered if that pressure point 5 step death touch thing was a form of dim mak. -
Nice story..I just hate how karate is becoming a generic term for tae kwon do

Sounds like Frank has the mentality of a martial artist.
