  1. I would rather be as strong, fast, and agile as I can be..and NEVER fight, than be physically unfit, and be in a self defense situation. As said above, just having the vitality for the aspect of Life itself is good. As Sohan once said, to put it vaguely, good luck defending yourself against a former inmate whose been doing nothing but pumping iron in the jailyard for 12 years, while you're having problems breathing.
  2. Haven't posted here in a while, been fairly busy, but i've been doing this any day I can't go to the gym: 3 minute skipping 2 minute burpees 2 minute shadowboxing 20 pushups x 5 20 crunches x 5 5 pullups x 5 Free weights 2 minute burpees 3 minute skipping Sprints
  3. Concerning bushidoman's comments about The Contender and fighting reality shows: The Ultimate Fighter is more appealing to me than The Contender, and i'm sure that goes for everyone, if not, most. More dynamic!
  4. I don't think you can just SEE..you have to test them. Give them a stimulus and see how they react. As most said, it would be unwise to show your fighting ability to strangers... Wait until you're underestimated, attacked, then let them have it.
  5. The harder the training, the easier the fight. Georges St. Pierre
  6. Yeah, until then I only knew of Burmese boxing from what I saw off Ong-Bak.
  7. Very good article and lesson to be learned from it.
  8. We use Osu like the Army would use "hoo-ah", or that's what it reminds me of anyway.
  9. Osu!
  10. I can't believe he lost.. And I was rooting for Diego Sanchez, who also lost..
  11. Some guy grabbed my collar the last week at school, I grabbed his wrist, pushed back, grabbed my wrist, and bam....Kimura. Waitied for the substitute to grab him away. All because I accidentally stepped on his shoes! Highschool....
  12. I quit watching it after I saw them show a 100lb (examples) Kung-Fu guy punch the thing, then show a 200lb Boxer punch it and say the Boxer's punch was the strongest. Of course it would be, Force = Mass X Acceleration. Hmm, who has more mass? They should have had same size weight for all the guys, etc. Good television....not so good science.
  13. To get your gut down, lots of Cardio. Burn those calories! Good exercises would be running, jogging, and rope skipping. For the muscle it depends how bulked up you want to be. A lot, then i'd advise extensive weight training. A little, and some oldschool stuff like pressups, situps, dumb bells. If you want abs, remember you have to get rid of all the belly fat. You can have rock hard abs, but if there's fat over your stomach no one will see them.
  14. I agree with you a lot. My Kyokushin instructor doesn't like me cross-training in Jujitsu, he thinks his art is the best and no other is needed. Same with my jujitsu instructor. Perhaps when this generation or someone from it becomes a sensei they can fix all of this..
  15. Martial, by definition, means war. Most of the techniques that are taken from any fighting style, are descended from moves that worked directly in defense of life, country, family, etc. Included in these techniques are the "cheap tricks" like hair pulling, eye gouging, biting, groin kicking, etc. If you are defending yourself, and skip an opportunity to do something that you consider "cheap" because you feel that is not the way it should be done, then you end up doing yourself a disservice in the end. Especially if it ends up in your defeat. Whether it is pretty or ugly, fancy or brutal, a fight is a fight. Just my opinion, though. I agree with you on this. If you see an opportunity, seize it. Realistically, fights are ugly, and brutal. you're usually just trying to not get knocked out and trying to knock the other person out. During the course of emotional rage, very few have the mentality remain calm and not get frantic, to seize the opportunity to groin kick...or kick at all for that matter, unless it's a pre-emptive strike.
  16. Out of everything that could be classified as "cheap"..sucker punches are the worst! I watch fights often to observe things...common things untrained people do (like haymakers), and seeing someone throw a sucker punch is just sad.
  17. When I said that I consider kicking between the legs cheap, I'm also classifying it with eye gouging, fishhooking, groin pulling, and hair pulling. But then again that would be in a perfect world where everyone fought fair, and where trained Martial Artists wouldn't have to resort to in-between the leg kicking. I took Martial Arts for 3 reasons, to learn self defense primarily, to get in better shape, and to become a better person. I go to the gym, and I'm not a bad person, have a lot of self discipline from ROTC alone. I would not have taken martial arts if my philosophy was to just try to survive a fight, by any means necessary like hair pulling and groin shots. I just want to put what I learned to good use. I'm just trying to say that I don't pay so much every month that when the time arises to fight, I just go for "cheap" shots. Sorry if I offended anyone, only trying to elaborate on my views.
  18. If you're talking about kicking between the legs, I would kind of consider that cheap..unless your life was in danger. But from experience I can tell you, kicking isn't cheap. I would recommend low kicks though, they will decrease your enemies mobility, while not throwing you as off balance as a highkick would be, and they can't usually be caught unless the guy is hunched over waiting.
