Defense Against the Hair Grab
Ace2021 replied to joesteph's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I keep my hair extremely short as a preference. Having one less thing an opponent can manipulate + cause you pain by is a nice benefit. However, I think this is predominantly a female hazard. Every single street fight I have ever seen with two women always comes down to the winner being able to manipulate their opponents hair, and punch them in the face whilst doing so. Short of shaving your heads, ladies, the only other thing I can think of to help you is braiding your hair, and that wouldn't be 100% effective. -

I'm going to say Skill, since you said unarmed combat. Had you said anything goes like weapons, that would be a whole different story. The only physical aspect I know of that constitutes Will is adrenaline, and that will only get you so far if you are a trying to defeat a Judo Black Belt, for instance.

Saw it two nights ago. I was right about the Karate Kid thing...won't spoil any detail though. Still nice to watch. -

Osu! Been doing Kyokushin for a few years. We punch to the head when we wear gloves, but in tournaments we go no gloves and body shots only.

It's not really a submission, so I would assume the only thing to do is Ground n Pound from there (or switch to a sub). Unfortuantely the Mount position is much easier to access from there,if you can pass, and much more proficient to Ground n' Pound from. I've seen Matt Hughes Ground n' Pound his opponents from there, before achieving mount to finish it. -

After reading the plot, it sounds like a remake of The Karate Kid, just for modern times. A bit discouraging, but if I can rewatch the Karate Kid (Decent movie), I'm sure I can watch this one and be entertained. -
How scared REALLY are you to fight?

I've been in a few of these heartracing situations. In the beginning my hands were shaking from the adrenaline and I didn't think I could focus if the guy attacked me (high school stuff). Nevertheless, he did attack me, but even though I was pumped and a bit frightened, the moves I learned in Martial Arts that were part of my reflexes, paid off. I hit him with two straight punches (he was swinging haymakers), and he dropped. Not KO'd, just hurt. My only regret is that I couldn't defuse the situation, just wouldn't work on someone who won't listen to you that you didn't talk to his girlfriend. Must be territorial/mating issues. Now, that situation has happened a lot since then, but I don't shake anymore. I'm confident in my ability to defend myself if I need to. The situation above was the 1st time by the way. -

Agreed, Shori. Also, the Kyokushin episode I saw was the best so far in my opinion. Rough kumite. -

One of my philosophies to living my life with some form of martial code, is Humility. The original poster is right, you cannot let people control you and get their way. When someone does something like insult you, they are expecting some resistance. When you give them that resistance, they have won the mental battle. Rude gestures such as the middle finger and curse words are best left ignored, however, if someone assaults or threatens your life....you should consider taking action.

I myself prefer the Ridge Hand strike over the Knife Hand. Ideal targets being a sidestepping motion striking the Throat or Solar Plexus. Can be very effective in a Street Encounter.
