  1. Kids amount to private gold mines, not only do they bring in kids but they also bring in women who wouldn't come to a class with only men (because of the image it projects), or the men who don't want a savage class. Look into running short courses at the local schools after school and plug your dojo there. Buy advertising space in local newspapers. Look into advertising on local radio. Find somewhere, as many places as you can, to do demonstrations. Run a couple of leaflet drops. Mention to your current students that they should try and bring their friends down.
  2. Kiai or kiyap actually translates to shout in Korean, and I imagine some other Eastern languages, so shouting it would essentially be the same as yelling 'shout!'.
  3. Both sides win when the war, and the killing, stops. Otherwise everyone's losing (except the weapon-makers)
  4. Yes, the bullies at school are the problem, along with the bigots, but is subjecting children to even more bullying really the answer? Do you remember being bullied at school? Is it really necessary to give them more victims?
  5. You can legally sell a book on cracking a computer, using a gun, building a bomb, using a sword, anything. Libraries avoid them for a simpler reason, people only rarely check them out.
  6. The only way to win a war is to stop it.
  7. Given my relatives I'd probably hurt them more than a mugger in the street.
  8. You don't need to condition your knuckles to throw a punch, it makes no difference to the power of the punch if your knuckles aren't conditioned in fact.
  9. We use the kiyap in CKD for two things. One is to scare people in an actual fight (works well too), the other is to help release adrenaline (also works well).
  10. Do what they say, kill them if you get the opportunity, or get away and around a corner fast.
  11. One important note, from what I can gather from the description, which is pretty minimal, it wasn't a nuclear bomb but more an explosive one designed to spread radioactive material. Still nasty, but a big difference between the two.
  12. Nah, you take the letter to Xerox round the corner.
  13. Just because you hit him first doesn't mean you shouldn't block, a block has other uses as well as security. For one a hard block can open someone up for more strikes. For another if you block then if something goes wrong, or they're not as drunk as they seemed, or they know what they're doing, then at least you've avoided them hitting you. I also didn't say it would be effective, it would be effecient. It would certainly cause massive damage to the terrorist movement. The fact that it would do the same to an extremely large area is irrelevant, that doesn't make it inneficient, merely stupid. [ This Message was edited by: ckdstudent on 2002-06-10 18:41 ]
  14. Actually I really don't see that whether the kids turn out straight or gay is a problem. The main problem I do see is the bullying they might go through at school. Before it becomes common our culture really needs to adjust, you get gays murdered in the streets for just being what they are. I guarantee that the same would happen to their children.
  15. You notice how the big debate over us assimilating more into Europe has vanished all of a sudden? I wonder why that would be.
  16. Of course training methods should evolve along with society, otherwise they become redundant. It would be like writing two hundred letters by hand because it was more traditional that using a photocopier.
  17. Pain in itself though is not a weakness, that's a very common mistake. Admitting to pain is not a bad thing except possibly in the middle of a fight.
  18. You learn a defunct weapon for the same reason you might take up any hobby, because its interesting. There is also the slight possibility it may come in useful someday. As for pulling your punches, it takes just as much energy to shorten a punch as to allow it to continue on its course, all you need to do is know the difference.
  19. In a football game though you're not trying to teach the other team, you're trying to beat them. In a class you should be trying to teach someone junior to you, rather than beat them.
  20. The Turner prize fits all of those criteria. Then again whether that's even art is very much debatable.
  21. Neither can you improve by fighting people way above your level, you improve by fighting people you can match, but barely so that you have to push yourself each time. If you're pushing yourself and still getting slaughtered you are learning nothing.
  22. Pain is a natural response to injury or harm, no weakness in that. There's a disease in which you feel no, or very little, pain. Its called leprosy. Most lepers are missing body parts because they cannot feel when they are damaged.
  23. The main problem is probably that no one can deny winning is more fun than losing (unfortunately our culture is geared towards this concept), so people will try to overpower people who aren't as good for them in training.
  24. Why bother painting a picture? Why bother composing music? Why bother writing a book? Why bother dancing? Why bother learning to use a defunct weapon? Why bother learning to ride a horse? Why bother with a typewriter? Even if we do still pitch tents and cook in the army these things are no longer considered martial arts. You can never tell what may or may not benefit you. Besides, can you prove that point sparring is completely useless? And then if it's not completely useless then surely it is benefiting you. If you say it is useless however, there are probably some people who want to talk to you.
  25. One time I saw a smallish kid sparring with an adult on his third class. This adult was big, but to be honest his techniques needed a lot of work. The kid had been training for about a year and was going all out to actually try and hit his partner. Every technique was getting through. I pulled him aside and got him to spar with me, then did the same to him before sitting him down and explaining that by doing what he was neither he, nor his partner were learning anything, all he was doing would be destroying his confidence and self-belief. Simply overpowering someone is completely pointless.
