This sounds like a great idea. Do you do things like bunkai and stuff? Or does it just depend on the course?

I have the opposite problem. Too little control. Somehow, I am really trying to have control but I just tend to snap out of it. I guess this would be a topic for another thread, but maybe any of you has similar experiences and can tell me what you have done about it without sacrificing power/distance/speed? This just comes with time. Slow down a little, and have your partner slow down too. Then do a faster match. It will come, don't worry.

Well, sometimes when you throw a counter, but pull it a little, and the other person doesn't realize you could have taken their head off, so they don't respect it. Also, getting close, but not connecting.

Yeah, that I need work on.

I can't hear you!!!!

Sometimes, I have gas at class. I have gas a lot, though. The secret is trying to slip them out quietly. Do that in a sparring ring, and see if the person notices. Then POUNCE! -

That's great news, Sohan. Glad we could help. -
Yes, congratulations on the 1000th post! You always have good info. I feel like we have a good group of regulars hanging out here, and it is always fun to see everyone's replys. The banter is exceptional! I have enjoyed this forum so much, and have made some very good contacts, and dare I say, some friends, off of this site. The feeling of comaraderie is great (did I spell that right?).

Accepting back past students to the dojo?
bushido_man96 replied to Shotokan-kez's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
We used to do it kind of like this in our old school in my hometown. It is always tough workout, sitting in stances while the instructor explains things. Good workout, because you get used to doing everything in a flowing manner, and not slowing down. I was always sore after those workouts! -
Accepting back past students to the dojo?
bushido_man96 replied to Shotokan-kez's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
The orientation is a half hour class, where it is just the student/students that are new, one on one with the instructor. -
In the Bible, where it states to make a "joyful noise" unto the Lord, they wrote that one in there for people like me.

Those "special" students that we all have...

Well, you inform the parent that the child will advance when you feel that he/she is ready. As for the left/right, and not paying attention: left and right will come with drills. I like to take to square pads, one red and one black, and designate a side to each (red is left/black is right). Hold them behind your back, and flash one out. The child strikes with the appropriate side. Have them start with hand strikes, and then work in kicks, and then speed it up to get combos going. As for paying attention, switch drills about every 8 to 10 minutes. This will help get around that short attention span. Parkerlineage: As for the private lesson, assign homework for the child. Draw up a sheet on exell on the PC, with certain things to work on, like stances and kicks. Have the parent initial them as he does them. Not too much, but not too little either. Make sure you keep the parents honest about it as well. Little things like stances, and reps of kicks and strikes. See how that goes. Best of luck! -
My problem is that I am tone deaf. Couldn't carry a tune in a bucket.

I think this is both jeff5's and Tokkan's first set of posts, so welcome to KF!

Those "special" students that we all have...
bushido_man96 replied to parkerlineage's topic in Instructors and School Owners
For the ones who don't want to be there, you have to try to make it fun for them. Make it a game, and they will take to it. But with both, just be patient, and take your time. If they do one little thing right, praise them for it. The reniforcement will help. Remember, being able to help these little guys succeed is what makes a good instructor. I always say anyone can teach someone who is talented. -
I feel like I sometimes have too much control as well. When someone really cranks me though, I tend to let them have it.
-
Yes, please elaborate. I like the sound of it, though.

Jeff5 made some good points about the books by Abernethy. He has taken kata and applied it completely for combat purposes, with 4 stages of training. I have done forms for quite some time, and have just recently found out about bunkai. I wondered why the Korean styles didn't have bunkai. I have decided to create my own for the forms, to give the forms a meaning. Perhaps you have had the similar problems that I have, and I intend to rectify this by research and study.

I don't like to assume that I am going to be fighting someone who is unskilled. Personally, I don't fight much. Never have. So, if someone wants to dance with me, I assume that they have been in fights, and therefore more experienced than I. And experience is a valuable teacher.

Kung Fu In Combat

They say that the people who are the best at defending the takedowns are the ones who know how to do the takedowns/grapple.
