  1. I agree completely. My experience as well. With respect, Sohan This has been my experience as well. It is a good building block for novice students to use to figure out how far away they can be from someone and still get good contact with a kick or punch. It also allows for full speed attacks to be dealt with in a controlled manner. You have to learn to walk before you can run, and to crawl before you walk. One-steps have helped me with that.
  2. Speed, yes OK. Timing, maybe - but only in terms of working on getting yourself moving as soon as you see the attacker move, but at that point you don't know what the actual attack is going to be. Distance, I'm really not convinced at all. The attacker's distance is generally totally wrong. Usually the defender's distance for their initial counter-attack is wrong too. And as the attacker now stands there sterile and lifeless any further counter-strikes the defender throws at them will likely be incorrectly distanced too. But my real bug-bear is that all those things (speed, timing & distance) can be equally well trained by other drills that don't teach the bad habits that one-step inevitably teaches. Mike Ok, you've made the point that you don't like one-steps. But, do you have some drills to offer that could be used for self-defense drills, since you like the effectiveness of them?
  3. You are lucky that you don't gain much weight, eating whatever you want. Don't count on that ability to stick around forever!! I am opposite of you. I lift 4 days a week. I can bench 305 max, but can't do push-ups well, and have to do assisted pull-ups. I guess it just depends on the person.
  4. You are welcome. I guess I have good timing.
  5. Huh, I don't notice any padding on that gear. Why wear it? Just go old school, with no pads!
  6. Most of the Chinese wars, much like other cultures, were fought with primarily weapons, and the hand-to-hand combat was the last ditch effort when the weapon was lost. This was the same with the Japanese, and with the Europeans. Each would have offered about the same amount of techniques and counters, etc, to disarming and/or taking a weapon or armed opponent down and incapacitating them. As far as going into an all-out ground fight, grappling/wrestling style, that would not have been as common in wars. Laying prone would get you killed.
  7. They mention in the movie that they allow hands, feet, takedowns, and strikes on the ground. However, no elbows or knees, and no grappling.
  8. I liked the looks of the first book listed. I may have to look into that myself! Thanks a bunch!
  9. ........um, not so sure about that. I'd have to have it done to me to believe it.
  10. I am not sure where you could buy some, but as an alternative, you could try to take a pottery class, use one of them wheels, and try to make some. That would be cool.
  11. Whew!! Wow!! This is going to sound bad, but I don't think I have ever been more frustrated with a win before. It just seemed like it hurt, all day long!! The defense got to Leinert when they needed too, so I think the D did a good job. They did give up a few big plays towards the end, but the 51 yard field goal was a little to much for Raekers. The offensive line has problems! What are we going to do?? I am very worried about that, and I think the Chiefs will feel it soon. Larry Johnson's injury was a scary one. Thank goodness he walked off on his own. Still, he may have to sit out a week, which I would not blame him for. Unfortunately, the back up running back, Michael Bennett, has been nursing hamstring injuries, so that leaves us with Dee Brown. He didn't perform all that well, but maybe if he gets some reps in practice, it will help out. My fantasy league team is doing well, but my opponent has LaDanian Tomlinson going tonight. I made all the right calls so far, so we'll see if it pays off. And lastly, my college team is now 0-6 on the season. Gotta keep the support, though. So, I sunder forward. (Did I fail to mention that I like the Royals, too??)
  12. Unarmed against a weapon all martial arts are at a disadvantage. Those that train for specific situations will have a better chance of surviving but still the odds go to the one holding the weapon. Very true. Unless you are Steven Segal!!
  13. I took a chance this week, and started Brad Johnson as my fantasy QB. The Lions have been pretty bad lately, and I am going on that this week. Have fun at the game! I got to see the Vikes and Chiefs play a preseason game at Arrowhead a few years ago. It was fun, getting to watch Culpepper and Moss, and Priest Holmes, Trent Green, and all the guys for a little while, before the scrubs went in.
  14. Why a "TKD" thing??
  15. I feel that wrestling is a martial art, along with boxing and Thai boxing. I don't think that just because the competitive aspect of these acitvities is at the forefront to the public demeans their value as fighting styles. They all have something to offer, and no style is complete.
  16. You are very welcome, Havoc88. As for back exercises, you can do supermans, where you lay on your stomach and reach out forward, like when superman flies. Then, you raise your arms, chest, and legs off the floor all at once, flexing the back muscles. You can do it in reps and sets, or hold for a time period.
  17. It's not the art, it's the teacher. That is a good point, ninjanurse. I think the problem lies just as much with TMAs as it does with MMA athletes.
  18. This is very well said. Everyone has different abilities, and a good instructor knows that not all of his/her students are going to be Bruce Lees. It just won't happen. But, they can all train as hard, and put forth the effort. I wouldn't worry about it too much.
  19. I think that Lee could probably weather the storm for a while, but he was fast enough that he would've got his shots in on Sapp as well. The main thing would be Lee's fight experience vs. Sapp's. Advantage, Sapp.
  20. That's typical of Sapp. He doesn't have much in the tank.
  21. I have heard that either is correct. Without gloves, the first two knuckles will be the contact points.
  22. Not very many TMAs have a lot of experience against full speed weapons encounters, either. MMAer may be at a slight disadvantage due to lack of training against weapons, but they will make up for that with their athleticism, conditioning, and experience. My dad told me about when he was a kid, he watched his dad (my grandfather) take a gun away from a guy and proceed to wipe the street with him. He had NO martial arts training whatsoever, but he did have some fighting experience. So really, it just depends on the person.
  23. One thing I would mention: once you get in on a tall person, and start going, DO NOT STOP!! Gaining territory on tall people is hard enough as it is, you don't want to give it up easily. Think of it as aquiring ocean front property. You both want it, but you have it, so keep it.
