    Testing

I guess I can take or leave testing. I have always had to test for rank, so it is what I am used to. Does that make it right? No, not really. However, testings have their advantages. It does give some a sense of accomplishment. Others, not so much. Like you said, you will know how good you are, inside. I don't know; I will think on this a bit. A good thread!
  2. If you know one of them, it is best to try to talk them down, get in front of him, and walk him backwards, while keeping an eye on the other party. Hopefully, someone is doing the same to them.
  3. Good deal! Just keep at it, and continue your hard work and effort, and you will be rewarded!
  4. Sometimes, if you really want to do it, you have to MAKE time for it. If you can practice on your own, then that is great. If you really want to train at a school, then you may have to arrange a schedule. You could do what I like to call a 'time budget.' Get one of those handy scheduling books, and whenever you do something, like wake up, get ready for work, commute to work, amount of time you work, etc, you right it down in the schedule book. Do this for a week or two. By the end of the two weeks, you will have a very general idea of what exactly you do with your time, when you do it, and on what days. You will also see where the gaps in your time is, and then you can 'budget' in other activities. Hope this helps....keep at it!
  5. Welcome to KF, Travis! Unfortunately, I have not heard of whom you speak, so I cannot offer any help. Sorry!
  6. Oooh, that is a good quote!
  7. I think you have a good point here, and the problem boils down to the thought of harassment. Guys tend be leary about the thought of harrasing a female, so we try to avoid it altogether.
  8. Boy, that would make it fun to play, then.
  9. Congratulations to Ryan! Way to go!!
  10. I was thinking of this earlier today, and I thought it would be kind of interesting to talk about. Strategy movies, or movies that have an underlying strategic theme. Two of my favorites: The Last Samurai, at the end, when they have the final fight. Another favorite is Down Periscope. Funny movie, but I love the think-on-your-feet philosophy, and the unorthodox method Kelsy Grammer's character has.
  11. That's kind of crazy! Funny, kinda. I have seen a book of laws that have never been repealed in some cities, and they are enough to make you laugh. Most of the time, though, they aren't even dealt with.
  12. This is just about the attitude you have to have when it comes to teaching many kids. Most kids are a challenge, in some form or another.
  13. Nice touch! I will remember that one!
  14. That would be nice, too. Another enigma is the Moo Duk Kwan Tang Soo Do and the Moo Duk Kwan Taekwondo branches. I have read a little inforamtion on that ordeal, and I am hoping to find more, so that I can write a little article on the subject. Hey, thanks John. That will be a big help. You can find tons of info on warrior-scholar.com/smf in the history section. There are several pages of discussion regarding the MDK.
  15. Your almost 30? We are about the same age!!
  16. Never heard of him.
  17. That is a great way to stretch!
  18. I am not confusing reaction time with punch speed. Reaction time is how long it takes to respond to a stimulus; not the same as speed of movement, which is what I am talking about. If you could only punch fast with an exhalation, then punching in combination would be detrimental, because when you put together a combination of hand techniques, it is not always possible to breath out with each technique executed. This is a pretty good explanation of what reaction time is; however, it is not speed of movement. Fast twitch muscle fibers come into play with every explosive movement that you do, regardless of whether or not you are acting or reacting.
  19. I think I have seen this one before. It is well done.
  20. A friend of mine got me to join up at the school I started at, years ago, and have been in the arts ever since. I guess I found my current school by seeing classes being taught at the college. I had been to the school before, but I got to talk to the instructor this go around, and joined.
  21. Actually, I feel that credentials are very much a part of politics. It used to be that you did something you loved, learned it through experience, like an apprentice, and then took over for the master, so to speak. Now, you are not allowed to know anything unless you get certificate or something that states that you have learned it, and it is ok for others to learn from you. There is good and bad to both.
  22. You can get good results from many punches by using your feet to push your hip and shoulder into the technique; not necessarily through stepping. You can step if you wish, but if you are close enough, it may not be necessary to step. Watch how boxers punch, and the way they use their feet to turn their hips into the punch.
  23. If you get into a fight, if the police pull up while you are fighting, then it is likely that you both will be arrested and charged with battery. At the very least, you will both be charged with disorderly conduct. If you injure him to the point that he needs immediate medical attention, you will likely be charged with aggravated battery. Battery is intentionally or recklessly causing harm to another person. It becomse aggravated battery when you cause great bodily harm, i.e., you end up sending them to the hospital. Whether or not who started the fight, and who is at fault, and to what extent is decided by a judge. If you would hypothetically kill someone in a fight, you could be charged with some level of murder. To determine it justifiable homicide, you would have to go to court to prove it. In the mean time, you would be spending time in jail, possibly without the ability to bond. The bottom line is that fighting in general is just a bad deal.
  24. Nice article. I enjoyed it, and it contains some very good points.
  25. These are some very interesting workout ideas. Thanks for sharing them.
