Instructor losing their cool in sparring

Heh. That'll learn ya. (On the other hand, you're clearly a good teacher if you're advice worked ) I guess that is one way to look at it! -
New Here. Have a question--stubborn student.
bushido_man96 replied to tone loc's topic in Instructors and School Owners
This is a tactic that I have used, and it usually gets results. If it doesn't work, then it would be in your best interest to discontinue the student. Otherwise, his disruptfulness will take away from those who are there to learn. Don't fall victim to this. Just because you need the money, it is not a good enough reason to keep around students that are going to act this way. If you start this now, then it will continue on, and it could lead to bad publicity eventually. -

4-6-08 I took my son to the park today, and did my own little workout while playing with him. I tried to do some pull-ups. I got quite a ways up on the first one, but hit a point where I couldn't get past. It felt like I was about half-way there, or a bit better, but couldn't complete it. I did a few more after that, each of which went less and less the way up. I also did some dips on some other bars, and also scaled the monkey bars once. -

Yeah, the government will fund it when the government is going to be represented internationally. That is why the race that was won by the WTF hurt the ITF so bad. -
My NAGA debut

Congrats on coming out with something new learned. That is what is great about competitions; you learn something everytime you go. -
The bits and pieces I saw looked pretty balanced. Other than getting his arm kicked into oblivion, I didn't see much that Shamrock wasn't able to take. Le did have some good leg catches and then leg kick-outs. Those had to suck. However, I would have expected to see more grappling, and was disappointed that there wasn't any, really. Perhaps the two will schedule a rematch?

Who Are Your Martial Art Heroes?
bushido_man96 replied to Johnlogic121's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Teddy Roosevelt would probably have been an awesome person to know. He was into just about everything Martial. I have even read about him and some buddies clearing out some furniture in one of the White House rooms so they could have some stick fighting matches. He was into some swordsmanship as well. Very cool. -
How to fight larger opponents
bushido_man96 replied to Throwdown0850's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
The best way to fight a bigger stronger opponent is to put him on his back. As a result, to try to get away from your opponent after you successfully took him to the ground and therefore gave yourself the best possible advatage to win wouldnt be practical. Mount or knee in the belly, and attack Sounds like a good plan to me. Also, by taking a big fighter down to the ground, they loose the advantage of leverage in their punches, relying essentially on only arm strength from their back. Having experience in the mount would help from this point on; experience I honestly need more of. -

Is he going to be doing only stand-up fighting now, or is he still looking for the MMA fight? -
There is a point to be made about the hobby Martial Artists that Treebranch points out. It is important, as instructors, that we bring out the importance of what the arts convey to those who tend to practice them or view them in this manner. There is nothing wrong with the MAs being done as a hobby; the important meanings of self-defense and fighting need to be expanded upon as well.

Kicking heads and making friends
bushido_man96 replied to ShoriKid's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
At my school, we have two students who have recently been promoted to black belt. I was running a class the other day, and while I was pairing them up to spar, I told them that they should try to push each other when they spar; to step it up. I told them that they were going to be the same rank together for a long while, and they should try to push and help each other out. I hope that they can forge a relationship like that as well. -
That is AWESOME! Nothing like a little barroom mercernary action to save your butt!

Wearing club logos or clothes on the street?

The Thai shirts do look cool. The "armlock" or "kneelock" shirts are...interesting. Just the words, and they leave the rest to your imaginiation, I guess. -
How scared REALLY are you to fight?
bushido_man96 replied to Throwdown0850's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I think that for the most part things like this will come down more to how the seasoned the other person is in this kind of situation. He may see people act like this all of the time, and may not think much of it. However, if they are not as seasoned, it could come into effect more. Just depends on the person. -
Thanks for the link. There are some nice pics there, and I like the dates and faces to the names.

Instructor losing their cool in sparring

I agree here too, I dont care what color of belt you have, if were sparring, I am going to try and take you down... period.. I agree. The other week, I took a hook kick to the face in class. My fault; should have had the hands up. I lived, I learned. Training goes on. I actually thanked my partner for it. It also happened to be a kick I told him to give a try. Goofy me! -

Sounds like a great class, Ed! 4-3-08 TKD Class: 6:00 - 7:00. Basics went quick today, because we got started a bit late. In sparring, I focused on my front kicks. -
ALRIGHT!!! My dream come true!!! First, some good mats for the floor, not too soft, but soft enough for forms and sparring, but for falling when doing Hapkido. Two different colors of matts; one for two rings in the room, and the other for borders. Our school uses red and blue; I like that. I would have a hanging bag in one corner, with enough room to work around it all angles. I would also have 2 or 3 Wavemaster XXL standing bags. In another corner, I would put a headache bag, and a speed bag. Mirrors would line two walls opposite each other; two walls would not be mirrored. Mirrors only 5 foot high, I think. One wall would be a solid bookcase shelving unit, from floor to ceiling, to hold all of my MA books. That is a MUST! I would have a makiwara board installed as well. I have never had the opportunity to train on one, and would love to. AC and heating would be a must. Perhaps a small desk and chair in one corner for jotting down notes, and sitting and having a coffee or beer with training partners afterwards to discuss training or good times. Oh yeah, need the minifridge, too!

The gloved ones may be better configured to receive hand technqiues. The square pads are nice, but they tend to slide and move a bit when punched or kicked. However, the square ones may allow more options, like knifehands, palms, ridgehands, etc.

Types of forms
bushido_man96 replied to rayjag's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Iceman is right. In most of the WTF books on forms that I have read, the Pal Gwe were the older forms, and the Tae Gueks are the newer forms. I don't know what kind of black belt forms there are of the Pal Gwe type; I think there are only 8. I am not sure if the Kukkiwon requires both, or just one. Nor am I sure what the WTF requires. I think the WTF just wants a rank certificate. -
If you have some good research backing, then that would be great. I am just interested in why Boxing became so attached to the Navy. Throw out what you have, and then elaborate on whether it is backed by fact, or by wild conjecture and theory. We'll go from there. I guess the reason that it strikes me as odd is because you would think of the ground forces of being more tuned into the hand-to-hand combat sports, where they would be more inclined to meet it on the field. In the present day Navy, the likeyhood of being boarded and having to repel enemies in the old pirate sense, is pretty much non-existent now. Do you see where I am coming from?
