  1. 5/9/2022 Strength Training Squats: 45x5x2, 180x5, 250x3, 325x1, 357.5x5, 325x5, 325x5. Press: 45x5x2, 75x5, 105x3, 140x1, 169x5, 169x5, 169x5, 169x5, 169x4. Lat Pull-downs: 145x10, 145x10, 145x10. Stretch: hams, quads, glutes. Squat work set felt really good. Press was going well; rep 5 on each set was a grind, and seemed to require a little more layback than the other reps. I think I short-changed my rest between set 2 and 3, and I think that may have resulted in the failed last set. On set 5, I drove rep 5 up once, and it died about 3 inches shy of lockout. I took some breaths, reset, and drove it up again....and it died in the same spot, again. I had never worked so hard to fail a rep twice in my life!
  2. 5/6/2022 Strength Training Deadlifts: 135x5, 185x5, 225x3, 275x1, 315x5, 315x5. Pin Press: 45x5x2, 95x5, 135x3, 165x1, 185x2, 187.5x2, 187.5x1, 187.5x1. Instead of power clean, I did deadlifts, 2x5, at 85% of my work weight earlier in the week. I then tried pin press again, but I don't think it's the right thing to do right now. It's a partial motion lift, and seems like it should load heavier than 5 lbs over my heavy press day to be yielding results. Back to the drawing board.
  3. The first DT certification I got was taught by Royce Gracie. He said he offered to teach law enforcement where he lived for free...seemed like a good investment for him and his family. He rarely had anyone show to do it. But hold weekend seminar and charge $300 or so for it, and people show up in droves.
  4. I agree with you here. I think its unfortunate that there doesn't seem to be as much adult interest in this kind of training like there used to be, but being a parent myself, I know parents tend to stay busy and don't get a lot of free time, and the time they do get probably doesn't fall at the same time the class schedule does.
  5. That is awesome! Congrats on your promotion! I think it is very cool that the Master took such an interest in your previous training like that. And he also apparently recognized that your level should be somewhat higher, which is very cool, too.
  6. I agree, that’s exactly what happened with kickboxing. However if KC sticks around it is very clearly karate, and the modern karateka in MMA are very open about how their karate is applicable to actual fighting. Something that didn’t happen historically. So what do you classify as "classical?" More open-minded to training with other styles, and exchanging theory and technique?
  7. This is how I've done it, and in TKD we have a form, Poe Eun, that has the similar technique, and I do it this way here as well.
  8. That's an interesting take. I think it depends on the area, too, especially the population. But I do see how pricing could be viewed to potential consumers.
  9. 5/5/2022 Strength Training Squats: 45x5x2, 175x5, 245x3, 315x1, 355x5, 315x5, 315x5. Press: 45x5x2, 95x5, 135x3, 165x1, 178x1, 178x1, 179x1, 179x1, 180x1, 181x1, 182x1. Lat Pull-downs: 142.5x10, 142.5x10, 142.5x10. Stretch: hams, quads, glutes.
  10. A weekend of training is a great weekend indeed!
  11. Sounds like you covered a nice spread of things this week, from advanced stuff, to review of lower level stuff; from training to teaching. A good week!
  12. I'm not sure if it will evolve much more or not. I think there are many of the traditional styles that will hold on to the way they do things, and any that change and evolve past those tend to get labeled as breakaways, and then I think they no longer get viewed in the same light. But I could be very wrong, too.
  13. 5/3/2022 Strength Training Deadlifts: 135x5, 185x5, 255x3, 330x1, 370x5. Bench Press: 45x5x2, 115x5, 155x3, 205x1, 225x5. Lying Triceps Extensions: 35x10, 45x10, 55x10. Stretch: hams, quads, glutes. New PR on deadlift. It was a strain, but I recorded the work set. Although it felt slow and grindy, the bar speed wasn't too terrible, and my back stayed set throughout the set. Decided to finish with some LTEs.
  14. Boy, that sounded like a bit a tense moment! Glad it was only a typo, for sure!
  15. 5/2/2022 Strength Training Squats: 45x5x2, 175x5, 245x3, 315x1, 352.5x5, 315x5, 315x5, 315x5. Press: 45x5x2, 75x5, 105x3, 140x1, 167.5x5, 167.5x5, 167.5x5, 167.5x5, 167.5x5. Lat Pull-downs: 140x10, 140x10, 140x10. Changed up the squat approach. Work up to a heavy set of 5, and then back off about 10% for 2x5. I hit the target weight for the working sets I was supposed to hit the last squat session, which felt good. TKD Class: 6:30 - 7:30 pm. Black Belt Class. I got in a little late, and started things off with Do-Kangs 3-5. Somewhere along in Do-Kang 4, I did something to my knee, and it wouldn't let me do any jumping after that. It hurt to even to stand on for a little while. After going through the black belt basics, we went into Ho Sin Sul. What we did I wasn't really enthused by.
  16. Humor aside, this is a pretty good point to consider. When the adrenaline dumps, fine motor skills go out the window, which could leave one fumbling with their belt buckle for too long, instead of actively trying to defend with both hands. I would say that if someone is even considering using their belt as an improvised weapon, then much like with carrying a handgun concealed, one needs to practice actually deploying the weapon in order to become efficient at it. Just having it isn't actually enough.
  17. A wooden one with some weight to it could certainly cause some damage. Likewise one of the full size umbrellas Agreed. I think an umbrella might not be as sturdy as a cane, but the training could translate, especially if they have that hook for the grip.
  18. 4/28/2022 Women's PDS (Personal Defense Seminar): 6:00 - 8:00 pm. I had participated in a few of these before as an assistant, but this is the first time I ran one on my own. It turns out I could have used more time, but I made the most of the time I had. We had 6 girls participating, and the CI of my school assisted me. We did some striking on pads, and covered several variations of choke defenses, and also a defense from the guard position. It was a lot of fun, and I look forward to the opportunity to do more of them. 4/29/2022 Strength Training Squats: 45x5x2, 175x5, 245x3, 315x1, 352.5x4, 352.5x2. Press: 45x5x2, 95x5, 135x3, 165x1, 177x1, 177x1, 178x1, 178x1, 179x1, 179x1, 180. Failed on squats. On set 1, rep 4, everything seemed to go slack at the bottom, and I was really afraid that I wasn't going to get out of the hole. I was able to stand up with it, and racked it, afraid 5 wouldn't come out of the hole at all, and I expended a lot of energy getting 4 up. On set 2, my balance shifted forward onto my toes in the bottom of rep 3, and I had to put it in the pins. Kind of disheartening, but may be time to make a change.
  19. Congratulations, Patrick and Kara!
