What did everyone think about the Forest\Bonner fight? Bonner is a tough kid (I rooted for him the first time and wanted him to win this time), but Forest looked amazing - calm, good footwork, precision punching. (I'm now a forest fan) Bonner did have his spinning side kick, but there was no question as to who won that fight. I was impressed with forest and now a fan of his! I would not pay to see them fight again, Forest seems to outclass Bonner now. I did not see Forest fight Tito, but people say that he should have won the decision.

places such as merit badges has missing you post cards. these post cards have about 20 kids doing a front kick with the words missing you at class on it. i got a few for free at the Martials Arts Convention in atlantic city last year (jan 6-8,2006). you can just put their address and your address on the post card and mail it. the student will see the post card and probably contact you to explain why he\she is not coming or starts up again. it is easy and not time consuming

it depends who is home at the time. Korn, Linkin Park, Nickelback, and SlipKnot

i agree with Jiffy.I could care less what belt color i have on. I just want to continue to learn and have fun. Even beginner white belts can teach you somethings (by teaching them and answering their questions as to why something works\doesn't work. they make you think...) I would want to be white belt if training in another style, I just want to learn everything i can. i can combine all my knowledge at home making me a better martial artists. Question, how many people have seen black belts in competitions do forms as a black belt, then spar in the white belt division with a white belt on... (i have not competed in several years, but witnessed this on several occassions during my competiotn years)

I started my martial arts training at the age of 6. My parents wanted me to be able to defend myself. I fell in love with it. (the respect, honor, loyalty, trust, knowledge,...) Now, Martial Arts is a way of life. Everything I do now revolves around learning and training.....

I would like to know what everyone thinks is the best age to begin grappling\joint lockups? I say 13 yrs old, but keeping it extremely light to not affect the growing joints (ankles, knees, shoulders, fingers,...) and only if the 13 yr old shows a good level of maturity and respect. I am asking because i drove by a school that was teaching UFC type techniques to kids that looked 7-8 years old . i was shocked, but maybe I'm just old school? am i wrong?

talk about the club to your friends in public places like the cafeteria. i'm assuming this is at a college, right? the demo idea is great! put flyers up all over. people will come to watch, you might get a few people to join. most people like watching martial arts, but when it comes to actual training - they pass. ask your instructor where else he teaches, and if it closes, then follow him to the other location. it might cost more, but the experience will be worth it. good luck. let us know how it turns out.

Final fu is a comedy. and its really funny.... I have seen about 3 episodes. Whenever a good solid technique is shown, a warning is given as reward Scoring is ridiculous. each fighter averages almost 70 points per fight. The challenges are funny, but better than the fights. My wife pointed out that some of the boards look like they have been pre-cut. i am going to watch more closely during challenges to see if this is really true. Some of my non MA friends actually think these are the best Martial Artists in the world today. I had to explain to them that this show is on MTV, not ESPN. Then i tell them to take a class with me, but they always seem to come up with some excuse. This show is for the masses, not martial artists... If it gets more people to train, then keep the comedy coming... if not, then they should cut their losses and pull the show...

sniper03. I have been taking Shaolin Kempo for about 6 years. It is a great style. you won't be disapointed!!! I would not worry so much about belt rank, but what you can learn from your instructor each class. Good Luck with your training.

Favourite Superhero
tke010 replied to KarateK's topic in Martial Arts Gaming, Movies, TV, and Entertainment
1=LOBO why - if you read the comic, you know why. 2=Green Lantern why - the ring would be very cool 3=Wolverine why - adamantium, claws, and attitude 4=colosus why - body turns into steel and super strength. 5=Punisher why - attitude and weaponry -
Interesting. You say "instant coffee grinds". Do you mean instant coffee or do you mean grinds from a pot of brewed coffee? I would guess the former since it would dissolve but who knows with 'Heloise' type hints. Does the brand/type of coffee matter? My wife keeps maxwell house instant coffee in the house. But, yes instant coffee is what you need to use.

To Keep Black GIs Black: Wash only black GI (can put other black only clothes in) Put machine on regular wash, use detergent. wait for the 1st cycle to end (water empties) when it fills up to rinse put in 2 table spoons of regular instant coffee grinds. The GI (if faded) will somehow magically come back to the normal black. If you put the grinds in with Detergent, it still works, but not as well. My mom read this in some handy hints book when I was a teenager. My wife washes my GIs now, and she does the coffee grinds thing with all my black clothes. Please try it out on an old black t-shirt or jeans before you attempt on your GI. If you like the results (Like I have), then try it on your GI.

What are some useful games for kids?
tke010 replied to marie curie's topic in Instructors and School Owners
yes, the cones are pretend walls with lockers. its actually set up as a square to simulate a school hallway (with 2 attackers walking to confront the other). I told the kids that a teacher would help protect them and stop the attack if they got to the patch area. if the kid trying to get the patch goes outside the cones, I yell stop and they try again. this means that they hit the lockers and would have gotten caught (and then would of had to defend himself\herself and getting into trouble with the school) the attackers should stay within the cones too, but I let it go if they went outside of them. they each get 2-3 tries. for any kid that get cocky (I had 1 get cocky as an attacker): I placed 2 of the biggest kids (the older teenagers) in the class to grab him in the game. he did not get to the patch. This provided the perfect time to explain that fights are not fair (kids won't fight you unless they think the will win). He was humbled. he was also the 1st to ask me if we could do that again next class. oh, as a warm up to get them doing what you want them to do, i had the kids face the cones and shuffle step to the right for 3 laps (tell them to go faster each lap) if they fall off their toes, pull them out of the line. Then switch directions. I then entered te line myself as the first person in the line, if i caught the last person while doing the shuffle step laps, they all had to do 30 squad thrusts. I came close to the last one in line, but never caught him because they were all trying so hard and having fun. -

Another cool game that I did last night: (8 yrs old on up - my teenagers really liked this one) Set up cones to make a big rectangle. Select 3 kids, (same gender and same size) One kid tries to get past the other 2 kids (without getting grabbed, falling down, or the sifu saying stop) in order to get a (small) patch. The kid trying to get the patch cannot punch or kick, only blocking to redirect the attackers arms. The other 2 kids have to attempt to grab his shoulders or wrists and prevent the 1st kid from getting the patch. (No punching or kicking allowed, if this happens - both attackers perform 30 squad thrusts) About 1/3 of the kids get the patch. The key to this game is footwork, being on your toes. Each kid should get a turn. This teaches the kids not to stand still when 2 people attack them and grab them in the hallways of school. Schools in NJ have a no tolerance policy for fighting. all parties involved get suspended for 5 or 10 days. no questions. This teaches kids other options (escaping the attack and go and get a teacher) than standing toe to toe with several attackers. the kids has a real good time with this one. I allowed them to root and yell out advice for the kid trying to get the patch. (some of the advice was impressive for kids) -
be aware of your surroundings. (does he have friends sitting around the room, are they all near him\her, do they look they could attack you too, can you put an object such as a chair\table between yourslef and the attacker...) avoidance is key, because every fight has consequences...(hospital, jail,...) you should put your hands up (fingers open), state loudly that you don't want any problems, and begin to walk to the exit. if your attacker begins to attack you, then you need to defend yourself and get out of there before his\her friends attack you.

I'm Looking forward to the new episode tonight.... Wonder who fights tonight...

Yoga. Yoga poses kick your butt. I am exhausted after my class. It has allowed me to lose weight ,increased my flexibility, and made me stronger. 2 years ago, i would never of said that. I would have told people to not take yoga, there is no value in it. I used to run, but lost motivation for it.

Effective Against Multiple Attackers?
tke010 replied to keith_aquino's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
why are you being attacked? school fight, being mugged, or something else -could not talk your way out of it? -could not walk into a store and ask the clerk to call police? how many attackers? 2,3,5,...10 Once the fight starts, I would move around to try and line them up single file while fighting. Multiple people can't hit you at the same time if they are lined up. do not let them circle you. Strike hard and fast. aim for vital areas: eyes, throat, knees.... Causing the first 2 attackers to drop to their knees will probably make the others think twice about attacking you. Be aware of your surroundings: dont back yourself intoa corner, always know an exit point to run if you are getting beat bad. can you put an object between yourself and your attackers (a fence, a car)? Is there a weapon on the ground you can use? Remember, all fights have consequences. How are you going to explain your techniques to a judge if your techniques cause severe damage\death. -
I have a student that did\does this to me. While I was teaching, I asked the kids a question about one of their Katas. I picked this student to answer and he started telling me about his favorite video game and what level he was on. I explained to him that now is the time for training and we could talk after class about his video game. I then selected a different person to answer my question. I had the video game discussion after class. I also told him that all discussions not releated martial arts will have to wait until after the hour we have for training. He understood. He still does it once a month or so, but he is getting better. (He tries really hard when he trains for a 7 year old.) He even brought in the game for me to borrow. I thought this only happened to me They are kids, so we need to be a little more tolerant with them. They want to be your friend, which is a compliment (at least i think so) He probably thinks your cool. Just tell him to talk to you after class because you really need to pay attention to what you are doing\the instructor. If he is in danger of getting hurt by walking into someone else technique, definitely tell the instructor immediately. There really should be no fooling around on the Dojo floor. Good luck, be patient, talk to him. it will get better.... Keep us informed on your situation

Great movie!!! The video game is great too. Its one of the few games that i played until the end. the game starts out pre-warriors, then leads you through the entire movie. the game play is awesome. this is a game that every martial artists who plays video games should definitely own!!! The ending of the movie (beach scene) is great in the game.... thats all I'll say.... -
6 years difference is not a big deal. I think Gracie got 1.5 million for that fight. (If I am wrong please let us know the correct amount he got) He walked in, fell down, got his money, and left. That fight definitely hurt the Gracie Family reputation. Hughes is an awesome fighter and would have won anyways, but Gracie should have put up a better fight. at least go 1 full round. Did Gracie's elbow break, I say no, but others are saying its broken.

I knew Ed was going to win, Danny did not have a chance. Danny yelled out that he is now an "Ultimate fighter". He is not an ultimate figther, he has only 3 official fights. And he lost last night. He did put up a better fight than I thought. I thought Ed either took it easy on danny, or his hype was way more than what he can do. He made fun of tito's legs, i don't think he would last that long against tito. Matt gets to show his stff next week. lets see what he made of.... who is going to make Matts Sandwiches now that Danny is gone? I'm rooting for Royce in UFC 60. Matt hughes is going to be tough though...

A cool game that i use about once a month or so is called push up fight (I think they actually use this in high school wrestling) 2 kids in push up position (heads towards each other) after I say begin, they each try to pull the others hand out, causing the other to fall to the floor. the kids that falls to floor or gets out of push up position loses. go best of 3. it builds muscle, hand eye coordination and reflexes. The kids like it. since they are so low to the mat, that when they fall they do not get hurt. you can put bigger kids against the littler ones. thats funny to watch i had an 8 yr old take down a 13 yr old twice in a row. -
I can't believe that Tate lost in the decision. It should have went a third round. I thought the kid that loast to Noah coming back was cool. it was a slap in the face to tito's team. i don't think he will get far though, maybe he will better his next fight. I'm glad that solomon did not come back.
